February 24, 2000

Agnes Martha Marshall of Chester, MD died at Spa Creek Elder Care Center, Annapolis, MD on Thursday, February 24, 2000. She was 91.

Mrs. Agnes Marshall was born on April 29, 1908 in Chester, MD. The daughter of the late James and Katherine Lemline Long. She attended school in Chester, MD. In August of 1927, she married William Samuel Marshall. They resided in Chester, where she was a homemaker and spent most of her life providing in-home nursing care. She retired in 1975. Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Church of Gad in Grasonville, MD.

Mrs. Agnes Marshall is survived by: two daughters, Anna Bella Saulsbury of Easton, MD and Elsie Mae Dill of Chester, MD, a step daughter Mildred Morgan, as well as 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren. She was predeceased by: her husband, William Samuel Marshall, a son, William A. Marshall, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lane, three step sons, W. Raymond Marshall, Leonard S. Marshall and Johnny O. Marshall, three brothers, Raymond Long, Herbert Long and Melvin Long and three sisters, Margaret Whitby, Louis Long, and Lolita Schylar.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Monday, February 28, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. Friends and family may visit on Monday between 1 and 2 PM. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery.

February 23, 2000

Albert Ambrose Starkey of Hartly, formerly of Barclay, Md., died Wednesday February 23, 2000 in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 76.

Mr. Starkey was born in Queen Anne’s County, Md., near Templeville, the son of the late Albert and Alva Graham Starkey.

He was a lifelong farmer and was recognized as one of the first farmers in Queen Annes County to successfully use the no-till method of planting a tiny seed and watching and helping it grow. He received numerous awards for crop production of many varieties.

He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball. He was an avid Orioles fan. He enjoyed coaching when he was younger and followed his sons through their sport careers as youths. He was usually seen with his trusted friends, his dogs on the front seat of his truck wherever he went.

Mr. Starkey served many years on the board of directors at Southern States. He was a very active member of the Sudlersvill Ruritan Club, serving in many different offices, and a member of the Marvin Mrmorial United Methodist Church, Barclay, serving on many committees within the church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Starkey, in 1988.

He is survived by two sons, Edward Starkey, and his wife Cora Lee, of Dover and Albert "Buck" Starkey and his wife Elaine of Millsboro; two brothers, Donald Starkey of Sudlersville, Md. and Charles Starkey of North Carolina; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 pm Monday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. 21651, where friends may call 7-9 pm Sunday.

Burial will be in Templeville Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to : Marvin Memorial United Methodist Church P.O. Box 202, Sudlersville , Md. 21668

Elmer Charles Doak of Easton, MD died at Easton Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February 23, 2000.

Mr. Elmer Doak was born in Monongahela, PA on June 7, 1922. The son of the late George Alvin and Marion Hagan Doak. The family moved to Washington DC. In 1935. Mr. Doak served in the Merchant Marines during World War II in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Mr. Doak was an independent tile and marble contractor and later did work for the U.S. Congress at the U.S. Capitol Building.

Mr. Doak is survived by: his wife, Roberta Clark Doak of Easton, MD, one son, Robert Elmer Doak of Grasonville, MD, two sisters, Virginia Cefaretti of Dunkirk, MD and Mildred Clark of Mechanicsville, MD, a grandson, Daniel C. Doak of Clifton, VA and a granddaughter, Debra Doak of Arlington, VA. He was predeceased by one brother, Ernest Doak.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 25, 2000 at 2:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Easton Volunteer Fire Co. P.O. Box 851 Easton, MD 21601.

February 20, 2000

Charles Robert "Bobby" Cook of Denton died on Sunday, February 20, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 47.

Born in Easton on January 28, 1953, he was the son of Helen C. Whitby and the late Charles Arthur Cook. While attending Easton High School, he moved to Queen Anne and later began working for the Grasonville Fishery in Ridgely. He married the former Beverly Smith on February 27, 1975. In 1976, he bought the Arnold Bakery franchise, a business that covered the Eastern Shore. He was currently self-employed as a general contractor for his company, Bob the Builder, which he began in 1985.

Mr. Cook was a member of the National Hot Rod Association and the International Hot Road Association. Along with drag racing, he enjoyed hunting, canoeing, and archery.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Cook and Isa Cook, both of Denton; and two step-brothers, Johnny Whitby of Bozman, and Lee Whitby of Centreville, VA.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Daughters of Bobby Cook Trust Fund, c/o St. Michaels Bank, 104 Marlboro Road, Easton, MD 21601.

February 19, 2000

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Parker of Stevensville, MD died at her home on Saturday, February 19, 2000. She was 66.

Mrs. Parker was born on March 18, 1933 in Mt. Rainier, MD. The daughter of the late John and Bertha Miles. She was a graduate of Mt. Rainier High School. She married James R. Parker in August of 1952. She worked for CECO Steel Corporation in Beltsville, MD as a secretary for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Parker moved to Huntington, MD in 1977 until recently moving in with her son in Stevensville, MD. She was active in the Calvert Pines Senior Center in Prince Frederick, MD.

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Parker is survived by: her son, Michael W. Parker of Stevensville, MD, a daughter, Ann M. Alley of Honolulu, HI, a brother, John J. Miles, Jr. of Florida and six sister, Bernice Erhler, Margaret Poole, Mariam Shields, Mary Curtin, Cathy Renner and Julia Davis, as well as three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James R. Parker in 1983 and a son James R. Parker, JR in 1995.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2000 at 1 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Chestertown, MD. Friends and family may visit on Friday, February 25, 2000 between the hours of 7 and 9 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD (Kent Island).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Calvert Pines Senior Center 450 W. Dares Beach Rd. Prince Frederick, MD 20678.

Mrs. Katherine J. Leight of Rock Hall, Maryland, died on Saturday, February 19, 2000 at the home of her daughter, in Millington, MD. She was 72 years of age

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland & Mary [Herbert] Brooks. She spent all of her formative years in Baltimore, and graduated from Kenwood High School located in Baltimore County in 1946. She worked as a playground teacher and later at the Glenn L. Martin Company.

She married Charles G. Leight on April 20, 1947 in 1965 she and her family moved to Rock Hall, Maryland. Upon moving to Rock Hall, she devoted her life to caring for others and teaching the bible having been Baptist one of Jehovah Witnesses in 1967. Her interest also included cooking, gardening, crabbing, square dancing and children. She had a special knack for making people laugh and fee at home.

A son, Herbert James Leight who died in 1956, precedes her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Charles G. Leight of Rock Hall, Md., a daughter, Carol G. Alexander of Millington, Md., 2 sons, Clifton B. Leight of Rock Hall, Md., Charles L. Leight of Chestertown, Md., a brother, C. Herbert Brooks of Essex, Md., and a sister Betty B. Freyman of Chincoteague, Virginia, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, Chestertown, MD

February 18, 2000

Sara Emily Batchelor Coleman of Chestertown, Md. died on Friday February 18, 2000 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. She was 69.

She was born in Chestertown, Md. on March 5, 1930, the daughter of the late John and Muriel Elbourn Batchelor. After raising her family she moved in with her son who cared for her for the majority of her life. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Coleman enjoyed crossword puzzles, painting, and crafts.

She is survived by her son: Dennis W. Coleman of Chestertown, Md., 2 brothers William Batchelor of Rock Hall, Md. and George Batchelor of Gainesville, Fla., 5 sisters: Katherine Kellas of Chestertown, Md., Barbara Turner of Galena, Md., Blanche Durham of Clayton, De., Dolly Coleman of Laurel, De., and Edith Bryden of Worton, Md. along with 2 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 23, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Md.

Eva May Richardson of Stevensville, MD died at her home on Friday, February 18, 2000. She was 78.

Born on April 18, 1921 in Washington DC. She was the daughter of the late James B. Richardson. She graduated from Anacostia High School in Washington DC class of 1940. She attended Columbia Business School for two years. She married Earl S. Richardson on December 5, 1942. Mrs. Richardson began working for Railroad Retirement in Washington DC and later for the General Accounting Office as secretary. They moved to Stevensville, MD. in 1975. She then retired from the General Accounting Office in May 1977. She was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church as well as the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #278.

Mrs. Richardson is survived by: her husband, Earl S. Richardson of Stevensville, MD, one son, Edwin James Richardson of Owings, MD and four grandchildren, Michael, Stephen, Nicholas and Megan.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at 11 AM at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. Friends and family may call on Monday, February 21, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD between the hours of 7 and 9 PM. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville, MD.

Ms. Daisy M. Edwards, died February 18, 2000 at her residence in Rock Hall, Maryland. She was 86 years of age.

Born in Rock Hall, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late, Harry & Annie Edwards. She spent all of her formative years in Rock Hall, and was a 1931 graduate of Rock Hall High School. After graduation she went to work at the Rock Hall Shirt Factory where she remained for a number of years. During World War II she went to work in the Kent Defense Plant in support of the War effort. She moved to Baltimore Maryland and went to work for Westinghouse as a soderer. She remained there for a period of 25 years. She retired in 1978. Upon retirement she returned to Rock Hall for the remainder of her life.

Ms. Edwards is a member of Raum Chapel where she played the piano for the Sunday school, and sang in the Choir for a number of years. She was a member of Raum Chapel United Methodist Women’s Organization, and a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Department .

In her spare time she liked to raise flowers, watch birds, and was a lover of animals, particularly Black Labs.

A nephew, Timothy Edwards of Rock Hall with whom she lived, three nieces, Deborah Edwards of Rock Hall, Md., Darlene Edwards of Merrit, Florida and Barbara Kemp of Louisiana, 1 great Niece and 2 great nephews, survives her.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 22nd at 1 PM from Raum Chapel in Rock Hall, Maryland. A viewing will be held on Monday evening at Raum Chapel from 7-9 PM Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
