Mera E. Green and Lara M. Green

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mera Elizabeth and Lara McKenzie Green, infant twin daughters of Sara Hooe and Troy Green, both of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Richard E. Gaver

SMITHSBURG - Richard E. Gaver, 78, of Bradbury Avenue, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born April 19, 1919, in Highland, Frederick County, Md., he was the son of the late Grover C. and Mary E. Johnson Gaver.

He was employed by First National Bank, Hagerstown, retiring in 1994. He previously was employed by Key Chevrolet, Frederick, Md.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.

He was a member of Salem Lodge 196 AF&AM, Smithsburg; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; and Elks Lodge 378, Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth B. Sherwood; two sons, R. Phil Gaver and Charles R. Gaver, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, James E. Gaver of Hagerstown and Cecil J. Gaver of State Line, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Mark Walters will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Salem Lodge 196 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. by

Charles F. Martin

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Charles "Pepper" Franklin Martin, 71, of Harpers Ferry, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 12, 1926, in Bakerton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry Howard Martin and Hattie Mansfield Martin.

He was employed by Standard Lime and Cement, Millville, W.Va., and Bakerton; and Halltown Paperboard, Halltown, W.Va.

He was a veteran, receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Goad and Sharon Young, and their mother, Carolyn Johnson Painter, all of Knoxville, Md.; five sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Dargan, Md., Blanche Writt, Betty Rickard and Mary Writt, all of Harpers Ferry, and Anna Pierson of Charles Town, W.Va.; five brothers, Howard Martin of Elkton, Md., Harry Martin of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Glen Martin of Dargan, Melvin Martin of Inwood, W.Va., and James Martin of Kearneysville, W.Va.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Charolette.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Daniel Montague III will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran Cemetery, Bolivar, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dorothy M. Thompson

ABERDEEN, Md. - Dorothy May Thompson, 76, of Aberdeen, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, in Lorien Nursing Home, Belcamp, Md.

Born in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Mildred Houpt Nye of Hagerstown and the late Oscar Nye.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Harding Thompson Sr.

She was a retired sales clerk for 7-11, Route 40, Aberdeen.

She was a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Aberdeen.

In addition to her monther, she is survived by two sons, Warren Harding Thompson Jr. of Havre de Grace, Md., and William Lewis Thompson of Aberdeen; one sister, Charlotte Shirley of Hagerstown; two brothers, Joseph Nye of Hagerstown and Harvey Nye of Lexington, Va.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Joe Thompson.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 16, at Grove Presbyterian Cemetery, Aberdeen. Paul L. Grant officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 353, Aberdeen, Md. 21001.

Esther M. Poper

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Esther M. Poper, 83, of 5675 Racetrack Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Oct. 15, 1913, in Upton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Emma Kate Wallech Horsh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Poper, on April 29, 1992.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Ebeneezer United Brethren Church, Greencastle, Pa.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce D. Bennett of Chambersburg; one son, Ronald K. Hearst of Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, St. Thomas. The Rev. Richard Mose will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Earl F. Kolb Sr.

LODI, Calif. - Earl F. Kolb Sr., 80, of Lodi, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at a convalescent hospital in Lodi.

He was born Aug. 2, 1916, in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Kolb.

He was a welder for 20 years before retiring from Bethlehem Steel, Pittsburg, Calif., in 1969.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1933 and went on an expedition with Adm. Richard E. Byrd to Antarctica to test weather equipment for the Navy before World War II. A chief petty officer, he was stationed aboard the USS Antares during the attack on Pearl Harbor and served it the Pacific during the war. He retired from the Navy in 1953.

He was a member of Kit Carson Mountain Men; and Lodi Gem & Mineral Society.

He is survived by four daughters, Donna Lee Kuykendall of Salem, Ariz., Kathy Haut of Grass Valley, Calif., Melody Krzyzanowski of Reelsville, Ind., and Rosemarie Liera of Lodi; one son, Earl F. Kolb Jr. of Forks, Wash.; one brother, Melvin Kolb of Maryland; one stepbrother, Harry Van Mater of Maryland; one half sister, Marylee Butchick of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Vigil service was held at Rocha's Mortuary Wednesday, July 30. Services were held Thursday, July 31, at the mortuary after which a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Lodi. Burial, with military honors by the U.S. Navy and VFW Lodi Post 1968, was in Lodi Memorial Cemetery.

Irvine H. Rutledge

Irvine Hart Rutledge, 85, retired judge of the Circuit Court for Washington County, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, of respiratory heart failure.

Born June 23, 1912, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Florence Hart Rutledge and Archibald Hamilton Rutledge.

His first wife, Eleanor W. Rutledge, preceded him in death.

He graduated from Mercersburg Academy and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from Princeton University and a bachelor of law degree from George Washington School of Law.

He spent his entire legal career in Washington County, first with the law firm of Lane, Bushong and Byron. From 1962 until his retirement, he was a Circuit Court judge, concluding as administrative judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court.

During World War II he served in the European Theater in the Judge Advocate General Corps and resigned with the rank of captain.

He was a member and past president of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.

He served on the board of Washington County Free Library, Coffman Health Center and Black Rock Golf Course.

He was a charter member of Washington County Sportsman Club, a member of Washington County Historical Society, Washington County Museum, Fountain Head Country Club, and Economic Development Committee.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church.

After his retirement, he assisted in the republication of stories and poems of his father, Dr. Archibald Rutledge, the late poet laureate of South Carolina. Judge Rutledge wrote several books.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Kaylor Rutledge; one daughter, Eleanor Lesher of University Park, Md.; one son, Henry Rutledge V of Salisbury, Md.; two stepdaughters, Jane Byler Stroot of Kensington, Md., and Ann Byler Boone of Columbia, Md.; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Henry Middleton Rutledge IV and Archibald Rutledge II.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zion Reformed Church. Burial will be private.

Visitation will be at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zion Reformed Church, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Joseph R. Snyder

SARASOTA, Fla. - Joseph Raymond Snyder, 68, a native of Hagerstown, who began his newspaper career with The Morning Herald in 1947, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

He lived in Sarasota since retiring from The Baltimore Sun in March 1991.

Born March 18, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Lillie Bloyer Snyder. He joined the Herald as a sports and general assignment reporter after graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1947.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

After his military service, he returned to the Herald as a sports writer under the late Frank Colley. He was named sports editor and columnist in 1963, and was made assistant managing editor of the paper in 1965.

In 1967, he left the Herald to join Fairchild Hiller Corporation as manager of editorial services on the public relations staff. He traveled wherever Fairchild products were marketed, researching stories for the three company magazines he edited.

Returning to the newspaper field in 1969, he joined the St. Louis Globe-Democrat sports staff, then moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1971. With the Sun, he served as a sports reporter, copy editor and copy desk chief, makeup editor and assistant sports editor.

While in Hagerstown, he conducted radio shows on WJEJ and WHAG, assisted in the formation of a number of sports organizations including the Little League baseball program, and was a popular after-dinner speaker.

He was a member of Hagerstown Elks Lodge and Jazz Club of Sarasota.

He is survived by five sisters, Ruth Gardner of Sarasota, Charlotte Spillan of Smithsburg, Martha Caskey and Dorothy Snyder, both of Hagerstown, and Shirley Garver of West Chatham, Mass.

A memorial service will be announced in October and will be held at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Robert W. Young

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Wesley Young, 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born June 25, 1929, he was the son of the late Elmer Wesley Young and Elsie Rebecca Wachter Young.

He retired as coordinator of Rayloc Corp., Hancock.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

He was a member of Deford Masonic Lodge 88, Berkeley Springs, where he was master in 1969 and 1970; Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Osiris Temple, Wheeling, W.Va.; Berkeley Chapter Order of Eastern Star 77, Berkeley Springs; Moose Lodge 1483, Berkeley Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Brakeall Young; three daughters, Bonnie Butts and Barbara Kyne, both of Berkeley Springs and Brenda Young of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Stephen Cuff will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Visitation will be today at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Berkeley Chapter Order of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 401 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.
