Dorse J. Harden

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Dorse James "Dudy" Harden, 81, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 19, 1916, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Samuel Emery and Lillie Edna Cain Harden.

He attended New Hope School, New Hope, W.Va.

He was employed by Seely Pine Furniture, Berkeley Springs. He retired in 1981. He was previously employed by Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation, Berkeley Springs.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Nov. 18, 1942 until being honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant on March 11, 1946. He was awarded The European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal; American Theater Ribbon; and World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019, Berkeley Springs; Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Berkeley Springs; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, Berkeley Springs; and served for many years as a member of the Tri-State Honor Guard.

He is survived by one sister, Jessie Elizabeth Harden of Berkeley Springs; three nieces, Tresa Ann Goodman of Thurmont, Md., Mary Ellen Harden and April Naomi Harden, both of Berkeley Springs; three great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Minnie Maiden; and one brother, Robert Paul Harden.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Rodney C. Truax will officiate. Private burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Military honors will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Harden Family Cemetery Fund, Route 1, Box 19, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Catherine F. Lockett

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Catherine F. Lockett, 77, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Nov. 20, 1919, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Jerry and Fannie Walker McDowell Sr.

She was formerly employed as housekeeper. She was previously employed by Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

She was a member of Community Baptist Church and attended St. Paul's Baptist Church, both of Kearneysville, W.Va. She also attended Holy Grace Church of God and Christ, Martinsburg.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Joseph Lockett Sr. at home; two daughters, Sarah Davis of Buffalo, N.Y., and Eddie Mae Lockett of Kearneysville; four sons, Willie Lockett Jr., the Rev. Tyrone Lockett, Ricky Lockett and Larry Lockett, all of Martinsburg; one brother, Sam McDowell of Kearneysville; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah King; and eight brothers, Johnny McDowell, Will McDowell, Benjamin McDowell, Norman McDowell, Dudley McDowell, George McDowell, Jerry McDowell Jr. and Robert McDowell.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Lily of the Valley Evangel Church. Elder Scott and the Rev. Nathaniel Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens. The casket will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Family members will meet at the home of the Rev. Tyrone Lockett, 627 N. High St., Martinsburg, Tuesday at 12:30 p.m., prior to services.

Detral H. Merchant

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Detral Howe Merchant, 71, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born May 8, 1926, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Willard and Iva M. Bohrer Merchant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velva L. Gray Merchant, who died in 1992.

He was educated at Posie Hollow, Morgan County.

He retired in 1983 from E.I. DuPont DeNemours Co., where he worked as foreman on the power line. After his retirement, he worked with his son, Rodney, who owns and operates Merchant Machine Shop. He was previously employed by Interwoven Mills.

He served with U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Calvary Chapel.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Martinsburg Lodge 120.

He is survived by one son, Rodney Merchant of Martinsburg; one sister, Rosalie Graham of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; one brother, Ralph Merchant of Cherry Run, W.Va.; and a close companion, Patricia O'Hara.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Vernie Newbraugh and Evelyn Taylor.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Marvin Marcus Caton Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred V. Grimes

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mildred "Millie" V. Grimes, 84, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Aug. 27, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William G. and Zalia Bayer Franks Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Tinker Grimes, who died June 4, 1956.

She was formerly employed by Kogelschatz Funeral Home as a receptionist.

She was a 1932 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

She is survived by one daughter, Judy Hillman of Baltimore; one son, Thomas Grimes of Sykesville, Md.; four grandchildren, Lisa Hillman, Bryan Hillman, Nicole Grimes and Christopher Grimes; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Carroll Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eileen Decourcy-O'Brien

Eileen Decourcy-O'Brien, 39, of 46 East Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Latrobe, Pa., she was the daughter of William P. and Anne Poerstel Decourcy Sr. of Silver Spring, Md.

She was employed in the office of Dr. Abdul Waheed.

She attended St. Ann Catholic Church, Hagerstown. She was a former member of The Shrine of St. Jude Catholic Church, Silver Spring.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Kelly O'Brien and Cara O'Brien, both of Hagerstown; two sons, Adam O'Brien and Jamie O'Brien, both of Hagerstown; one brother, William P. Decourcy Jr. of Rockville, Md.; and one grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Andrew S. Mohl will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Thelma C. Harbaugh

QUINCY, Pa. - Thelma C. "Fat" Harbaugh, 87, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 11497 Buchanan Trail East, Waynesboro, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born Oct. 13, 1909, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Harvey P. and Alice G. Cordell Haner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewlyen A. "Babe" Harbaugh, in 1981.

In her early life, she was employed by Wayne Manufacturing Co., Waynesboro. She was then a machine operator at Waynesboro Knitting Mill. Prior to retiring in 1967, she was employed by Waynesboro Hospital for 12 years in the laboratory and dietary department.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She is survived by three sisters, Gladys "Lib" Harbaugh of Five Forks, Pa., Edith Heefner and Helen Kreitz, both of Waynesboro; one brother, Robert Haner of Pasadena, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Haner and Mildred Whitlock; and two brothers, Guy Haner and Ralph Haner.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, near Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Eleanor P. Brubeck

WILLIAMSPORT - Eleanor P. Brubeck, 97, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of 780 Fountain Head Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born Nov. 18, 1899, in Little River Falls, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Alice M. Burnell Phillips.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude B. Brubeck.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by one son, Benjamin S. Blanchard Jr. of Blacksburg, Va.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Burial will be Thursday at noon at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Lewis G. Hite

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Lewis Guinn Hite, 48, of Gerrardstown, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 25, 1948, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late James W. and Irene Bell Triggs Hite.

He was employed by United Paving in Martinsburg.

He was a member of Buck Hill Church, R.F.D. Gerrardstown.

He is survived by his wife, Lorna Marlene Gaither Hite; one daughter, Gloria Adams of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Lester E. Hite and Lewis Hite Sr., both of Martinsburg, and James Hite, at home; six sisters, Virgie M. Faircloth and Dorothy M. Kerns, both of Gerrardstown, Annie M. Hite and Joyce Ann Horner, both of Richmond, Va., Catherine F. Gesford of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Hazel J. White of Martinsburg; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Hite, Hilda Hite, Jeanie Hite and Betty Hite; and four brothers, James Hite, an infant brother, William "Buck" Hite and Lee Hite.

Services will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. Martinsburg. Pastor Harold Hess will officiate. Burial will be in Buck Hill Cemetery, R.F.D. Gerrardstown.

Glenn E. Shafer

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Glenn E. Shafer, 74, of Quebec School Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born Jan. 19, 1923, near Middletown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Effie Wiles Shafer.

He retired after 40 years with Farmers Cooperative Association Inc. Petroleum Division as a fuel oil truck driver. After retirement, he farmed.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Marker Shafer, whom he married on July 29, 1944; three sons, Gary V. Shafer, Alan L. Shafer and David G. Shafer, all of Middletown; three sisters, Mary Zeigler and Irene Eisentrout, both of Middletown, and Louise Tyeryar of Frederick; two brothers, Albert Shafer and Charles Shafer, both of Middletown; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Eigenbrode and Catherine Shoemaker; and one brother, Earl Shafer.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown. The Rev. Donald L. Turley will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown.

The family will receive friends at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, today from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home anytime today. Friends also may call at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Willis A. Younkins Sr.

Willis Abner Younkins Sr., 73, of 12038 Warrenfeltz Lane, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Sept. 10, 1923, in Middletown, Md., he was the son of Alice V. Moser Younkins of Boonsboro and the late Martin A. Younkins.

He was employed by Lone Star Cement Co. and retired in 1987 after 38 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Clopper Michael Post 10 American Legion, Boonsboro.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret L. Younkins; two daughters, JoAnn Nelson of Cheshire, Conn., and Alice I. Younkins of Germantown, Md.; two sons, Joseph H. Younkins of Hagerstown and Willis A. Younkins Jr. of Edgewood, Md.; one sister, Madeline Brothers of Annapolis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, today from 7 to 9 p.m.
