Merle W. Keefer

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Merle W. "Whitey" Keefer, 65, of Route 1, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at his home.

Born June 30, 1932, in Sylvan, Pa., he was the son of the late William Ralph and Mary E. Mills Keefer.

He medically retired from Rohrer Industries in Hagerstown in 1992.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. "Libby" Shifflet Keefer, whom he married on March 12, 1952; six sons, Bernnie Keefer and Kenny Keefer, both of Falling Waters, W.Va., Terry Keefer of Hancock, Ronnie Keefer of Hedgesville, W.Va., David Keefer and Keith Keefer, both of Berkeley Springs; one stepson, Raymond O'Rourke of Hancock; four sisters, Ruby Weaver of Amaranth, Pa., Bessie Shilling of Hagerstown, Violet Harris of Hancock, and Mary E. Dicken of Clearville, Pa.; one brother, John H. Keefer of Kaisesville, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Keefer, and two infant brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hancock Assembly of God Church, Pennsylvania Avenue Extended, Hancock. The Rev. Charles W. Helms will officiate. Burial will be in Warfordsburg Presbyterian Cemetery, Warfordsburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

George J. Michael

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George John Michael, 63, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Dec. 17, 1933, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Leslie Ulrich and Beulah Grace Allemong Michael.

He was a 1950 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

He retired from the U.S. government with the West Virginia Air National Guard in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1957.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Ridersville, W.Va.

He had served from 1975 to 1982 as a senior division coach with the Berkeley Springs Little League.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Berkeley Springs.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara Marie Sheppard Michael; two sons, David Alan Michael of Clear Spring, and John Aaron Michael of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; two sisters, Julia Z. Barnhart of Berkeley Springs and Anna Ruth Harris of Baltimore; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin E. Michael; and one nephew.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate. Burial with military graveside honors will be in the Michael Family Cemetery, New Hope, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today for the convenience of friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or Morgan County Volunteer Rescue Service, P.O. Box 151, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Veda M. Ranck

FORT LITTLETON, Pa. - Veda M. Ranck, 88, of Leisure Living Retirement Home, and formerly of Hustontown, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at the home.

Born Sept. 29, 1908, in Gracey, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jere and Lillie M. Kirk Heefner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar W. Ranck, in 1969.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Hustontown United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Philathea Sunday School Class.

She was a member of Hustontown Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, Robert W. Ranck of Fayetteville, Pa.; one half-sister, Eunice Parks of Newton Hamilton, Pa.; two half-brothers, Willis Heefner of Hustontown and Kermit Heefner of Manheim, Pa.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Pastor George Clippinger will officiate. Burial will be in Hustontown Cemetery, Hustontown.

There will be no public viewing. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hustontown Area Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 537, Hustontown, Pa. 17229.

Margaret R. Spring

BOONSBORO - Margaret Ruth "Peggy" Spring, 45, of 8450 Tusings Way, who died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, is survived by a sister, Janice Lynn Herrell of Ocala, Fla.

L. Ray Kline

SHADY GROVE, Pa. - L. Ray Kline, 65, of 1930 Buchanan Trail East, P.O. Box D-1, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Sept. 16, 1931, in Leitersburg, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Ethel Nichols Kline.

He owned and operated Kline's General Store in Shady Grove for 38 years. In his earlier life, he was a farmer in Shady Grove and he also drove a school bus for 17 years in the Greencastle-Antrim School District.

He was a member for more than 40 years of Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church, near Waynesboro. He was a member of Kingdom Builders Sunday School Class.

He was a 40-year charter member of Shady Grove Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Lou Sostar Kline; four sons, Garry R. Kline and Barry L. Kline, both of Greencastle, Pa., Larry J. Kline and Terry L. Kline, both of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Gladys Smith of Littlestown, Pa., and Kathleen Witmer of Greencastle; two brothers, Paul E. Kline of Mt. Zion, Ill., and Melvin C. Kline of Springfield, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church, 14807 Hollowell Church Road, Waynesboro. The Rev. James Sollenberger and the Rev. Nelson Witmer will officiate. Burial will be in Price's Church Cemetery, near Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, today from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

Vernon L. Stottlemyer

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Vernon L. Stottlemyer, 66, of Brandenburg Hollow Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 18, 1931, in Frederick County, Md., he was the son of the late William E. and Lillian Hayes Stottlemyer.

He was a retired painter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Korean War.

He attended Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville.

He was a member of South Mountain Rod and Gun Club, Smithsburg.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Lee Snow of Wellford, S.C.; three sons, Master Sgt. Dennis Wayne Stottlemyer Sr. of Beaufort, S.C., Patrick Allen Stottlemyer of Innman, S.C., and Michael Lynn Stottlemyer of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Mary Susan Arvin of Jefferson, Md.; three brothers, George Marvin Stottlemyer, Roy Stottlemyer and Ercy Stottlemyer, all of Myersville, Md.; 16 grandchildren; his former wife, Lenore Moser Stottlemyer of Innman; a special friend, Brenda Wilson of Frederick; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ellen Jackson; and one brother, Gordon Stottlemyer.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville. The Rev. Ronald A. Beverlin will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive friends at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gilbert F. Nichols

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Gilbert F. Nichols, 95, of Martinsburg, and formerly of Baltimore, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Heartland Nursing Home, Martinsburg.

Born Dec. 25, 1901, in Laurel, Md., he was the son of the late Richard F. and Lillian Lydaid Nichols.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Nichols; and his second wife, Marjorie Cross Nichols, in 1986.

He retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Co., where he had many years of service.

He was the last of his immediate family. He is survived by three cousins, Everett Foster of Gerrardstown, W.Va., Anna Hess of Martinsburg, and Gilbert Foster of Stephen City, Va.; one niece; three nephews; and Ronald and Carolyn Hess, with whom he lived.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elva Shinnaman; and one brother, Hillary Nichols.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at Louden Park Cemetery, Frederick Avenue, Baltimore. The Rev. Ellis Hess will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary E. Brandenburg

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Mary E. Brandenburg, 90, of Clinton Township, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, N.J.

Born Nov. 15, 1906, in Myersville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary "Mollie" Routzahn Harp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin M. Brandenburg, in 1985.

She is survived by one son, Carl A. Brandenburg and his wife, Constance of Annandale, N.J., with whom she lived; three grandchildren, Eric C. Brandenburg of Raritan Township, Karen A. D'Arcy of Doylestown, Pa., and Lisa A. Tinnesz of Annandale; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Md. The Rev. Norman D. Kemmerer will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Myersville.

Helen J. Dawson

THURMONT, Md. - Helen June Dawson, 74, a resident of Montevue Home, Frederick, Md., and formerly of Thurmont, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, at the home.

Born June 1, 1923, in Frederick County, she was a daughter of the late Alonso and Alice Kline Barkman.

She was retired from Claire Frock, Thurmont.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Thurmont.

She is survived by one son, James Wesley Speak of Thurmont; two sisters, Mary Jane Portner of Emmitsburg, Md., and Marie Stimmel of Thurmont; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Pauline Bennett and Goldie Bowman; one brother, Alonzo Barkman; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey & Son, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The Rev. Douglas L. Griffin will officiate. Burial will be in Weller Cemetery, Thurmont.

Friends may call today from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hazel T. Bowers

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Hazel T. Bowers, 84, a resident of The Shook Home, Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of 208 Schoolhouse Road, St. Thomas, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, at the home.

Born July 26, 1913, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Della L. Hornbaker Knable.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest L. Bowers, on Jan. 14, 1973.

She was employed by the former Mercersburg Dress Factory. She was last employed by Corning Glass Works, Greencastle, Pa. She retired in 1967.

She was a member of St. Thomas Assembly of God Church, and was a member of Women's Ministries.

She is survived by one son, Forrest Lee Bowers of Chambersburg; one sister, Margaret G. Gaylor of Newville, Pa.; one grandson, Forrest Craig Bowers of Chambersburg; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Alvin J. Hezlep and the Rev. Daniel H. Kelchner will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

A viewing will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to The Shook Home, 55 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Lutheran Social Services and designated to Hospice, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
