February 17, 2000

Lois Perry Meng of Chevy Chase, MD, passed away on February 17, 2000 at Carriage Hill in Bethesda, MD. She was 84 years old.

She was the widow of Dr. Ralph H. Meng, deceased, and a former resident of Pear Tree Point Road, Chestertown, MD.

Mrs. Meng was born in Geneva, Switzerland, where her father Reverend James Perry, was a missionary providing relief efforts with the Y.M.C.A. during World War I. Mrs. Meng attended Wheaton College in Massachusetts and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1937. She married first in 1939 Dr. S. Shepard Jones, an official with the U.S. Department of State. She married second in 1966 Dr. Ralph H. Meng, a psychiatrist in private practice in Bethesda, Maryland.

During 1950’s Lois Meng was editor-in-chief of the Foreign Service Journal, in Washington, D.C. and later was a science writer with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, MD. In 1961-1962 she was on the staff of President Kennedy at the White House, in connection with the President’s Commission on Mental Retardation, later returning to NIMH. In 1976 Dr. Ralph Meng joined the medical staff at the Togus, Maine VA Hospital, and they lived for 13 years in Camden, ME. In 1989 Dr. And Mrs. Meng moved to Chestertown, MD, and Dr. Meng worked at the Eastern Shore State Mental Health Facility in Chestertown. Dr. Meng passed away in October 1995, and is interred at the Quaker Cemetery outside of Chestertown. Dr. and Mrs. Meng were members of the Chester River Meeting of the religious Society of Friends.

She is survived by four children, Samuel Shepard Jones, Jr. of Chevy Chase, MD; David R. Meng of Tuba City, Arizona, John N. Meng of Norfolk, VA and Ann Meng Row of Downey, CA. She also has three stepchildren, Mary Meng Chittick of Long Beach, CA, Ellen Meng Schmidt of Blue Jay, CA and William L. Meng of Alexandria, VA. She has 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Another son, Sherman Perry Jones, passed away in 1982.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 25, 2000 at 4:30 p.m. at the Chester River Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in Chestertown, MD.

Marjorie Elizabeth Swearman of Forest Hill, MD, formerly of Queenstown, MD died at Fallston General Hospital on Thursday, February 17, 2000. She was 75.

Mrs. Swearman was born in Halethorpe, MD on June 6, 1924. The daughter of the late Stanley and Edna Andrews. She attended Catonsville High School. She married Thomas M. Swearman on June 12, 1943. She worked for 20 years at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab as a group secretary, executive secretary. She retired on June 29, 1984. The Swearman family then moved to Hickory Ridge in Queenstown, MD. She was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church as well as the Arbutus United Methodist Church. Mrs. Swearman was a volunteer with Hospice of Queen Anne’s County , a member of the local Homemakers Association of Queenstown, MD. and a member of the Eastrn Star of Halethorpe, MD. She was also a member of the church choir for the Arbutus United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Marjorie Swearman is survived by her husband, Thomas M. Swearman of Forest Hill, MD , two sons, Douglas J. Swearman of Columbia, MD and Barron Swearman of Belair, MD, and one brother Kenneth Andrews of Fort Lauderdale, FL. as well as six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD at 11 AM on Monday, February 21, 2000. Friends and family may visit on Sunday, February 20, 2000 between the hours of 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Easton, MD.

Robert Edward Hightower of Glen Burnie, formerly of Easton, died on Thursday, February 17, 2000. He was 18.

Born in Riverdale, Georgia on October 18, 1981, he was the son of David Arnold Hightower of Severn, MD and Beverly Ann Baxter Thomas of Easton. He attended private school at the Bible Baptist School in Riverdale, GA and then after moving to Easton in 1992 he attended Easton public schools. At the time of his death he was a telephone technician with McCaw Enterprises of Silver Spring, MD.

Surviving, in addition to his parents are his sister, Kelly Marie Hightower of Easton, his stepfather, William C. Thomas, Jr. of Easton; his paternal grandfather, O.S. Hightower of Sioux City, Iowa; his paternal step-grandfather, Robert Hildebrand of Huntington, TN and his maternal step-grandfather, William C. Thomas, Sr. of Chester. He was the grandson of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Edward Baxter and the late Mrs. Vera Hildebrand.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, February 19, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7-9 PM and one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

FEBRUARY 16, 2000

Mary Elizabeth Gardner of Stevensville, MD died at her home on Wednesday, February 16, 2000. She was 86.

Mrs. Gardner was born on February 26, 1913. In the 1930’s, she married Harvey Gardner, who predeceased her. They raised a family in Baltimore, MD. In 1952 the Gardner family moved to Stevensville, MD. Mrs. Gardner was a member of the Church of God in Grasonville, MD. She was also a member of the Percy Thomas senior Center in Stevensville, MD. She loved sewing, gardening and eating seafood. She was a loving wife and mother.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gardner is survived by four sons: Harvey Gardner of Stevensville, MD, Gary Gardner of Stevensville, MD, Michael Gardner of Stevensville, MD and Thomas Gardner of Centreville, MD, and one daughter, Louise Tudor of Baltimore, MD, as well as sixteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by: her husband, Harvey Gardner of Stevensville, one son, James Gardner, and one brother, John Barlein.

A funeral service will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Saturday, February 19, 2000 at 11 AM. Friends and family may visit on Friday, February 18, 2000 between the hours of 6 PM and 8 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Kingsley Cemetery in Chester, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Percy Thomas Senior Center, Kent Island P.O. Box 5 Stevensville, MD 21666.

DONALD WEBSTER SMITH, OF SALISBURY AND FORMERLY OF EASTON, DIED AT THE HOSPICE HOUSE, EASTON ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2000. HE WAS 66.

BORN IN EASTON, AUGUST 11, 1933, HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE RALPH AND ELLEN PAULINE BLAKE SMITH. AFTER GRADUATING FROM EASTON HIGH SCHOOL IN 1951, HE PLAYED MINOR LEAGUE PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL UNTIL JOINING THE U. S. NAVY IN APRIL OF 1952. FOLLOWING HIS RELEASE FROM ACTIVE DUTY IN 1956, HE MADE HIS HOME IN EASTON UNTIL MOVING TO SALISBURY IN 1970 WHERE HE WAS A PRESSMAN FOR THE BURROUGH CORPORATION WHICH IS NOW STANDARD REGISTER. HE RETIRED IN 1995.

MR. SMITH IS SURVIVED BY A DAUGHTER, KAREN S. SCHAUBER, OF MECHANICSBURG, PA. AND ONE GRANDDAUGHTER.

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2000 AT 2:00 PM AT THE FELLOWS, HELFENBEIN AND NEWNAM FUNERAL HOME, EASTON, WHERE FRIENDS MAY CALL ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE SERVICE. BURIAL WILL BE AT SPRING HILL Cemetery, EASTON.

MEMORIAL DONATIONS MAY BE MADE TO THE TALBOT HOSPICE FOUNDATION, 586 CYNWOOD DRIVE, EASTON, MD. 21601.

February 15, 2000

Robert E. Lewis of Chester, MD died at his home on Tuesday, February 15, 2000. He was 80.

Mr. Lewis was born in Minersville, PA on October 3, 1919. The son of the late Edgar and Mrs. Lewis of Minersville, PA. He graduated from Minersville High in 1938. In 1941 he married Eileen Phillips, who predeceased him. Then, he was drafted into the United States Army. Mr. Lewis served during World War II, then returned to Washington DC after his tour in the Army. Mr. Lewis became a welder in Hyattsville, MD. working for Giant Foods. He retired in 1982. He then relocated to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Mr. Lewis loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Robert Lewis is survived by three sons, James R. Lewis of Waldorf, MD, Robert E. Lewis, Jr. of Chester, MD and William Lewis of Berlin, MD. as well as eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen M. Lewis, a daughter, Diane M. Johnson, a brother, Chester Lewis and a sister, Sarah Lewis.

A funeral service will be held at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD on Monday, February 21, 2000 at 10 AM. Friends and family may visit at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Sunday, February 20, 2000 between the hours of 6 and 8 PM. Interment will be at the Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dunkirk, MD at 1 PM on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne’s County 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, MD 21658.

Jay Clinton Crouch of Chester, MD died at his home on Tuesday, February 15, 2000. He was 47.

Mr. Crouch was born in Chester, MD on May 9, 1952. The son of William Walter and Gloria Mae Wyatt Crouch. He graduated from Queen Anne’s County School class of 1971. He started working for his Uncle Royston Trapp locally, using heavy equipment. Mr. Crouch had worked over 20 years for Local # 37 as an operating engineer out of Baltimore, MD. His last employer was Doracon Contracting Inc. of Baltimore. He was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, a past member of the Bay Bridge Jaycees, the Kent Island Racing Association, the Train Collectors Association and the Bay Country Moose Lodge #831.

Mr. Jay Clinton Crouch is survived by his wife, Barbara Olin Crouch of Chester, MD. whom he married on March 6, 1976, two daughters, Tara Leigh Crouch and Casey Anne Crouch both of Chester, one brother, Glenn D. Crouch of Chester, MD, two sisters, Honey M. Voermann and Penny T. Crouch, of Chester, as well as his parents. Mr Crouch was predeceased by one brother, the late David M. Crouch of Chester.

A funeral service will be held at the Kent Island United Methodist Church at 11 AM on Friday, February 18, 2000. Friends and family may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Thursday, February 17, 2000 between the hours of 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Kent Island United Methodist Church P.O. Box 308 Chester, MD 21619 and/or The American Cancer Society, Queen Anne’s County P.O. Box 132 Queenstown, MD 21658.

February 14, 2000

Jack Joseph Russell of Easton, formerly of Bethesda, a self-employed architect since 1971 died of cancer on Monday, February 14, 2000 in Easton.

Born August 12, 1930 in Williamsport, PA, he was the son of the late Jack Gordon and Agnes Kowski Russell.

He attended Columbia University and, although he was an architect for most of his career, he was also an artist and sculptor. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 where he completed Counter Intelligence Corps School and served as a Counter Intelligence agent. He received the National Defense Service Medal.

Volunteer work was an important part of Mr. Russell's life. He was active in the following organizations; University of Maryland Terrapin Club, Friends of the Maryland Bank, American Institute of Architects for both the National and Potomac Valley Chapters, Bethesda Chamber of Commerce and the North Bethesda Rotary Club.

Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Lou E. Wilson of Easton; three children, Tanya Shuy of Olney, Drake Russell of Gaithersburg and Grant Russell of Columbia; a sister, Katie Caschera of Williamsport, PA and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 10 at 2:30 PM at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA and at the Audubon Naturalist Society (Woodend), 8940 Jones Mill Road, Chevy Chase, MD at 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Maryland Band Fund, 1106 Tawes Fine Art Building, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 2072.

February 13, 2000

Josephine Ives Kirsch died on February 13, 2000 at Corsica Hills Nursing home in Centreville, MD. She was 76 years old.

Born in Morgantown, West Virginia on February 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Lucy Rose Brutto. Mrs. Kirsch graduated from Morgantown High School in 1941 and attended Morgantown Business College. During World War II, she worked for the State Department in Washington D.C. and, after the war, in Switzerland.

Upon returning to Morgantown, West Virginia, she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Education in 1956. She taught high school in Uniontown Pennsylvania for one year before moving to Dover, DE in 1957. There she taught business education and drama at Caesar Rodney High School from 1957 to 1966.

From 1966 to 1973, Mrs. Kirsch taught business at Queen Anne’s High School in Centreville, MD. She retired in 1973 and lived in Chestertown, MD with her husband until her death.

Mrs. Kirsch was a member of the National Teachers’ Association; Future Business Leaders of America; Chester River Yacht and Country Club, and Wild Quail Golf & Country Club. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Chestertown, MD where she did volunteer work. She also was a volunteer worker at Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital. She was an avid golfer and a talented craft maker.

Mrs. Kirsch is survived by her husband; Eugene Nicholas Kirsch of Chestertown, Md.; a daughter, Stephanie L Liguori, and son-in-law, James E. Liguori of Dover, DE and her granddaughters, Liane Rose Liguori, Erinn Madonna Liguori, and Kristen Marie Liguori, her sisters, Lee M. Olson and Theresa J. Pantalone.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Chestertown, MD. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Alzheimer’s Research Eastern Shore Chapter P.O. Box 2233 Salisbury, Md. 21802-2233 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital P.O.
