Elmer M. Brooks

Elmer M. "Dreams" Brooks, 69, of 327 Henry Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at his home.

Born March 26, 1928, in Fauquier County, Va., he was the son of the late Luther I. and Mabel A. Grigsby Brooks Sr.

He retired from Fountain Head Country Club and formerly worked at Alexander Hotel and Fairchild Aircraft.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany.

He was a member of Zion Baptist Church and the Men's Ministry.

He is survived by one daughter, Yvonne A. Hart of Baltimore; two sisters, Myrtle V. Harmon of Hagerstown and Kay O. Baker of Mount Pleasant, Texas; one stepsister, Yvonne Davis of Kearneysville, W.Va.; two brothers, Luther I. Brooks Jr. and James E. Brooks, both of Hagerstown; his life-long friend, Margaret "Honey" Slaughter of Frederick, Md.; one grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, corner of Bethel and Jonathan streets, Hagerstown. The Rev. Haru Carter Jr. and the Rev. Andre Blythe will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held at the church today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Anna M. Sheeder

EVERETT, Pa. - Anna M. "Ann" Sheeder, 77, of North Spring Street, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at Memorial Hospital of Bedford County, in Everett.

Born Aug. 4, 1920, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Mary Brittner Nunnally.

Her husband, Virl H. Sheeder Sr., died in 1991.

She was a member of Needmore Volunteer Fire Co. Women's Auxiliary, and RSVP of Bedford County.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Schetrompf of Warfordsburg, Pa., Claudia Duckwall of Chambersburg, and Nancy Ramsey of Breezwood, Pa.; three sons, Virl Sheeder Jr. and Gary Sheeder, both of Warfordsburg, and John Sheeder of Everett; four brothers, Howard Nunnally, Richard Nunnally and Robert Nunnally, all of Baltimore, and George Nunnally of Reisterstown, Md.; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. Gary Peters will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Warfordsburg.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home in Hancock, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

Edwin H. Smead Sr.

Edwin Howard Smead Sr., 80, of 12907 Fountain Head Road, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Edwin Julius and Grace Kriete Smead.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris E. Smead, on Sept. 10, 1980.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.

He was employed by Staton Furniture, and then owned Hagerstown Cabinet Co. and Wood Industries, all in Hagerstown.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown.

He was a member of American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Bennett Smead; one daughter, Sally Smead Weiss of Hagerstown; one son, Edwin Howard Smead Jr. of Hagerstown; one stepdaughter, Vicki Bennett Firor of Frederick; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard "Pete" Kriete Smead.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Kenneth J. Dorsch will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Lung Association, 11 Columbia St., Cumberland, Md. 21502.

Mary J. Cole

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Jane Cole, 76, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Feb. 24, 1921, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elmer Lee and Lenora Mae Kitchen Lucas.

Her husband, Raymond G. Cole, died in 1983.

She graduated from Hedgesville High School.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and the Philathea Sunday School Class.

She is survived by one daughter, Lois Jane Cole Spies of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one stepson, David Allen Cole of Martinsburg; three sisters, Lois DeHaven of Springfield, Va., Virginia Avey of Keyser, W.Va., Phyllis Merceruio of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and one brother, Edward Deward Lucas of Bowie, Md.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mitchell D. Trivitt

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Mitchell David Trivitt, 21, of 60 W. Madison St., died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, from injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident in Antrim Township, Pa.

Born Oct. 27, 1975, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of Harold David and Suzie Ann Shatzer Trivitt of Greencastle.

He lived his early life in Littlestown, Pa.

He was a 1994 graduate of Greencastle High School.

He was employed by Jiffy Lube in Chambersburg, Pa., and as a cabinet maker at Oak Tree Caseworks in Greencastle, for the past year.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Kyle David Trivitt of Greencastle; one brother, John Michael Trivitt of Greencastle; six aunts; three uncles; and a number of cousins.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. Michael Young will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Yvonne S. Mellott

Yvonne Sue Mellott, 35, of 216 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born July 28, 1962, in McConnellsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Avilee Mateldia Deshong Leidig of Greencastle and Michael Ray Mellott of Middleburg, Fla., and stepdaughter of William and Deborah Snoke Leidig of Greencastle.

She was a 1980 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School, attended McPhearson College in McPhearson, Kan. She received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and political science and a master of science degree in public policy administration, both from Slippery Rock University.

Following graduation, she worked for CASA in Hagerstown as a case worker, then as a counselor for a local shelter for battered women and children. For the past seven years she was employed by Foster Care as case manager with Washington County Social Services, actively working with children and their families and as an advocate for children's rights.

She attended First Gospel Church of Hagerstown.

In addition to her parents and stepparents, she is survived by one sister, Clydetta Marie Hensley of Greencastle; one brother, Todd Eugene Abbott of Greencastle; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Jaye M. Bartle will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Nazarene Cemetery in Harrisonville, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Department of Social Services, 122 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21741-1419; or to the American Cancer Society, 1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Brandon J. Hurd

Brandon Jacob Hurd, infant son of Jim and Kimberly Hurd of Hagerstown, was born and died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Jack Hurd of Hagerstown; maternal grandparents, Michelle and Bill Chase of Albuquerque, N.M., and William and Leslie Martin of Martinsburg, W.Va.; paternal grandparents, Jim and Jane Hurd of Hagerstown; maternal great-grandmother, Stephanie Stelfox of Silver Spring, Md.; maternal great-grandparents, Lloyd and Eloise Martin of DeLeon Springs, Fla.; four aunts, four uncles and three cousins.

Family and friends may attend graveside services Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Bernadine D. Miller

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Bernadine D. Miller, 70, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at City Hospital.

Born June 27, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin R. and Hattie McCallister Davis.

She was a 1947 graduate of City Hospital School of Nursing and was a registered nurse.

She retired from Berkeley County Board of Education, where she was head cook at Rosemont School.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

She was the first cook for Meals on Wheels in Berkeley County.

She is survived by her husband, Charles R. "Sam" Miller; two sons, R. Craig Miller of Cincinnati, and Gary L. Miller of Martinsburg; one sister, Liona Wagoner of Berkeley County; two brothers, Roy B. Davis and George D. Davis, both of Berkeley County; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Leona Davis.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church. Pastor Bill Morki will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Rosedale Funeral Home in Martinsburg, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

A nurses memorial will be held today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. All area nurses are invited to participate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Youth Fellowship of Otterbein United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2378, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25402.

Virgil L. Seal Sr.

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Virgil Leo Seal Sr., 72, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 23, 1925, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward Leo and Eliza Jane Buracker Seal.

He retired after 30 years as a truck driver for Hemingway Transport Co.

He was a member of Mountain View Church of the Brethren.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Occupation Ribbon.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nathleen O. Shanholtz Seal; three daughters, Charlotte Buchanan and Rena Baker, both of Bunker Hill, and Deborah Ott of Charles Town, W.Va.; two sons, Virgil L. Seal Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., and Clarence O. Seal Sr. of Bunker Hill; two sisters, Ruth Pearl of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Iva Shingleton of Winchester, Va.; one brother, Andrew Seal of Middleway, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Seal, Donnie Seal and Charles Seal; and by a brother and sister who died in infancy.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Pastor Devon Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill.

Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mitchell D. Trivitt

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A memorial fund has been set up at First National Bank, 40 Center Square, Greencastle, Pa. 17225, for Kyle David Trivitt, whose father, Mitchell David Trivitt, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Bill Dayton

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Bill Dayton, of Gettysburg, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at his home.

Born in Porcupine, S.D., he was the son of the late Heber and Signe Dayton. He lived in Oregon before moving to Pennsylvania more than 40 years ago.

He owned Dayton's Tour Hosts. The Bill Dayton 18-Piece Orchestra played until 1994. He also formed a combo that played for several decades.

He was former owner of Upper Adams Bowling Lanes for 14 years.

He was lay leader of Biglerville Centenary Methodist Church.

He was an honorary member of Upper Adams Jaycees, was on the board of The Office for the Aging, chairman of the committee to build the new Pen Mar Park pavilion, a member of the board of Zap-A-Snack (division of Better Baked Breads) of North East, Pa., a member of Gettysburg Moose, an honorary member of the Elks, a 32nd-degree mason, and a member of Good Samaritan and Zembo Temple Shrine, Consistory.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis L. Dayton; one daughter, Sandra Richwine of Westminster, Md.; one son, Craig Dayton of Saylorsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Peggy Taylor of Redmond, Ore., and Lois Toftemark of Eugene, Ore.; three brothers, Steward Dayton of Boulder City, Nev., John Dayton of Myrtle Point, Ore., and Roy Dayton of Oceanside, Calif.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Biglerville, Pa.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Linus Pauling Institute for Cancer Research, Oregon State University, 571 Weniger Hall, Corvallis, Ore. 97331; or Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Lutheran Home Care Services, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, Pa. 17325.
