February 12, 2000

Lawrence "Larry" Richard Perry of Cordova, MD died Saturday, February 12, 2000 at his home. He was 65.

Born March 1, 1934 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late William Wightson and Margaret Freedman Perry. He attended school in Queen Anne’s County and graduated from Severn High School. He then graduated from University of Baltimore with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He worked as a comptroller for Airpax in Cambridge, MD. and Westinghouse in Annapolis, MD. During this time, Mr. Perry also helped his mother with Peggy’s Diner in Grasonville, MD. Mr. Perry later owned and operated Perry’s Country Store in Cordova, MD.

He was a charter member of the Bay Country Moose Lodge #831 in Grasonville, MD. Where he received his Pilgrim Degree and served as secretary for 13 years. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Cambridge, MD.

He is survived by his wife to whom he married on April 1, 1969, Virginia Mae Perry of Cordova, MD. Two sons: Lawrence "Rick" R. Perry, Jr. of Trappe, MD. and Jeffrey Willis Perry of Cordova, MD. Two daughters: Laura Faith Perry of Cordova, MD. and Paula Margaret Kougoures of Stevensville, MD. One sister, Catherine P. Sylvester of Grasonville, MD. 6 Grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, February 19, 2000 at the Bay Country Moose Lodge # 831 in Queenstown, MD. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation 586 Cynwood Drive Easton, MD 21601.

Lillian Thomas Merrick died Saturday February 12, 2000 at Magnolia Hall. She was 99.

Born October 20, 1900 in Crumpton, Md. she was the daughter of the late Lida Benson and E. John Merrick. Miss Merrick was in the second graduation class of Sudlersville High School in 1917.

She graduated from Western Maryland College in 1921. She began her teaching career in Church Hill High School. Thus began 50 years of teaching in Maryland and Middletown, Delaware schools. She received her Masters degree from the University of Delaware.

Miss Merrick was active in each of the communities in which she lived. She belonged to the Women’s Club of Cecil County, was the longest member of the Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church in Sudlersville, having joined the Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1912, which later merged with Calvary-Asbury Church. She had been president of the Board of the Sudlersville Memorial Library.

She was president of the Sudlersville Community Betterment Club for several terms totaling 11 years. During her tenure, the old Sudlersville Train Station was restored to become the Sudlersville Train Station Museum. This houses a collection of Sudlersville memorabilia. Her work received state-wide recognition by the Maryland Historical Trust. Also during her time as president, the Sudlersville Community Betterment Club sponsored the first Sudlersville Day in 1976. Miss Merrick was named Queen Anne’s County Citizen of the year in 1981.She was known as an avid bridge player, a local historian and a traveler.

Miss Merrick was preceded in death by her two sisters Eva Merrick and Fannie B. Merrick and her brother, E. John Merrick Jr. Mrs. Merrick is survived by numerous cousins, including James B. and Marjorie M. Clements of Seaford, De, who assisted her as needed during her last 12 years.

Arrangements will be handled by the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Millington. Services will be held on Tuesday February 15 at 2:00 pm at the Calvary Asbury United Methodist Church in Sudlersville, Md. Friends may call 1 hour prior.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Sudlersville Train Station Museum, P.O. Box 2 , Sudlersville, Md. or the Sudlersville Memorial Library, P.O. Box 112, Sudlersville, Md. 21668.

Sarah Jane Forrester died on May 12, 1999 in Gwynn Oak, MD.
She was 13.

Born in Chestertown, MD, she is the daughter of the late Larry Francis Forrester and Rose Marie Forrester of Chestertown, MD.

Sarah had just completed the 7th grade. She loved singing, listening to music, ice skating, drawing, and sports. There was nothing Sarah couldn’t do. She was a good child who was loveable and beautiful. She was funny, active and always lively.

In addition to her mother she is survived by her paternal grandparents Cecil and Minnie Forrester of Salem, West Virginia; a sister: Angel Forrester, 3 step brothers: David Busick, Jr. of Hagerstown, MD, Donald Busick of Edgewood, MD and William Busick of Essex, MD. She is also survived by her stepfather: Raymond Rusden Jr. of Chestertown, Md. Along with several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chestertown, Maryland. Interment will be in Salem, West Virginia. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Md.

February 11, 2000

Orville John "Dutch" Schulte of Los Gatos, CA died on Friday, February 11, 2000 at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. He was 81.

Born on July 13, 1918 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of the late William F. and Bertha Hemplemann Schulte. In 1941, he was drafted into the Army and, following Officer Candidate School, was commissioned and sent to be part of the Signal Core. He then joined the Air Force in 1942 and his honors included the Legion of Merit, The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, and the Air Force Commendation Ribbon for Meritorious Achievement.

While stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, he attended the University of Colorado. He then was assigned to Dayton, OH where he received a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1951. He was also stationed in Rome, NY, and then in Chicago, IL where he received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. He was able to settle in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area for thirteen years where he was active in Little League Baseball, and the PTA. In 1967, he retired from the Air Force as the Director of Research & Development for the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.

He relocated to Los Gatos, CA and was active in the Rinconada Hills Association where he lived. He also worked for twenty years for the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA until his second retirement.

Col. Schulte is survived by his wife, the former Beulah Salinger of Los Gatos, CA, whom he married on July 17, 1942; a daughter, Karen M. Schulte Fisher of Easton; a son, Dennis John Schulte of San Luis Obispo, CA; a grandson, Darren A. Fisher of Annapolis, MD; a granddaughter, Robyne M. Fisher of Baltimore, MD; a great-grandson, Camden C. Fisher of Annapolis, MD; a cousin, Arnold Topel of Peoria, IL; and a nephew, William Noel Schulte of Norcross, GA.

Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA on Tuesday, February 29, 2000 at 3:00 PM. Those wishing to attend need to be at the Administration Office by 2:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Shore Chapter, P.O. Box 2233, 212 W. Main Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Richard (Dick) Searles Rose of Chestertown, Md. died on February 11, 2000 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home in Chestertown, Md. He was 74.

He was born on September 2, 1925 the son of the late William Searles and Ruth Starr Rose.

Mr. Rose served in the U.S. Army and the Air Corps. He played and sang on a Chicago Radio Station with notables such as Tennessee Ernie Ford and Grandpa Jones. He also drove a Greyhound bus and was a game warden in St. Michaels, Md. He also worked for David A. Bramble for 20 years.

His interests included singing and playing music as part of the Fairlee Quartet, Old Steam Engine Trains and drawing. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Fairlee and Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36 in Chestertown, Md.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Sharon Rose of Chestertown, Md., Four Sons: Joseph Michael Rose of Easton, Md., Richard Starr Rose of Chincoteague, Va., Mark Randall Brown of Nashville, Tenn., and Robert Wayne Greenwood of Rock vale, Tenn., 2 daughters: Brenda Ruth Rose of Finksburg, Md., and Tamatha Lynn Rose of Chestertown, Md. four grandchildren: Brandy Starr Rose, Kristin Lori Rose, McKenzie Blake Greenwood, and Zackary Ian Greenwood.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 16, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday February 15, 2000 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. Interment will be in Chester Cemetery. Contributions may be made in her memory to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association 4049 Oakland School Road Salisbury, Md. 21804. Those serving as pallbearers are: Bobby Shockley, Lee Bigelow, Francis Elliott, Bob Scott, Jerry Danoff, and Rickey Tobias. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Md.

February 10, 2000

William J. Martin died Thursday February 10, 2000 in the Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital, Chestertown, Md. of heart failure. He was 74.

Mr. Martin was born in Dickson City, Pa. The son of the late William H. and Rosetta Griffith Martin.

He is survived by his wife Mary D. Martin, 2 sons, Anthony Martin of Betterton, Md. and William H. Martin and his wife Christy A. Martin of Massey, Md.; a grandson Timothy J. Martin also of Massey, Md. and a granddaughter, Elizabeth P. Martin fo Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday February 13, 2000 at 1pm from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where friends may call 1 hour prior.

Interment will be in the Galena Cemetery, Galena, Md.

In Lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Betterton Vol. Fire Co. Betterton, Md. 21610

Alexander Ewing Seymour of Easton died on Thursday, February 10, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, MD. He was 92.

Born in Cambridge, MD on November 30, 1907, he was the son of the late Lee Merrick and Miriam Leonette Ewing Seymour. After graduating from Easton High School in 1925 he was employed by the Acme Markets in Georgetown, DE from 1931 until 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army and following his release from active duty he established Seymour Builders, Inc., a construction business he ran from 1946 until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Easton, the American Legion Post #70 and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1622.

Mr. Seymour is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Edwina James; a daughter, Nancy S. Matthews of Easton and a sister, Marcelyn S. Shockley of Palmyra, PA. A sister, Lois E. Stafford died in 1956.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 17, 2000 at Christ Episcopal Church, Easton.

Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Christ Church Memorial Fund, 111 S. Harrison St., Easton, MD 21601.

Katherine S. Morris, of Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Thursday, February 10, 2000. She was 77.

Born in St. Michaels on May 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Marie Marshall Shockley. After graduating from St. Michaels High School in 1939 she, in September 1941 married Irving F. Morris. They made their home in Greensboro until moving to Easton in 1974.

A member and Past President of the Ladies of the Elks, Easton Lodge #1622, she was also a member and Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Greensboro V.F.W. Post #7937.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter Donna Morris Minner of Greensboro; a son, John F. Morris of Queenstown and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 11:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, c/o Sheila Bateman, 501 Dutchman's Lane, Easton, MD 21601.

February 09, 2000

George Stanley Klapka, Sr. of Preston died at his residence on Wednesday, February 09, 2000. He was 75.

Born in Baltimore on January 1, 1925, he was the son of the late Stanislov and Anna Svejnoha Klapka. He served as an artillery gunner for the Army Air Force 874th Bomb Squadron, 498th Bomb Guard, 20th Air Force from 1943-46. In 1948, he married the former Nancy J. Poggi of Preston, and they made their home in Baltimore until moving to Annapolis in 1962. He worked as an electrician for the Truland Organization in Arlington, VA for 35 years. Following his retirement in 1987, he moved to Queenstown until moving to Preston in June 1999.

Mr. Klapka was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 24 in Baltimore.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George S. Klapka, Jr. of Preston; two daughters, Nancy Lee Harrington of Ridgely and Mary Ann Moreland of Culpepper, VA; a sister, Anna Wells of Denton; and a grandson. A sister, Marie Shanta, is deceased.

Burial will be private.
