Marie C. Sanders

KENSINGTON, Md. - Marie Catherine Sanders, 95, of 4209 Franklin St., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at Randolph Hills Nursing Home in Wheaton, Md.

Born Jan. 6, 1902, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Bridget Madigan Daly.

Her husband, George A. Sanders, preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

She is survived by three daughters, Marie S. Wagner of Kensington, Patricia Ryder of Sturbridge, Mass., and Ann C. Footer of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; three sons, John G. Sanders of Albuquerque, N.M., George J. Sanders of Chambersburg, Pa., and David A. Sanders of Melbourne, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 226 W. Washington St., Hagerstown with the Rev. Jack Fullen as celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Children Inn, National Institutes of Health, 9000 Rockville Drive, Bethesda, Md. 20892.

Earl R. Kershner

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Earl R. Kershner, 91, of Route 1, Box 150, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Dec. 3, 1905, in Needmore, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles R. and Catherine Fisher Kershner.

He was a farmer.

He was a member of Needmore Bible Church.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Cora Mellott, Carrie Gordon and Viola Seville; and three brothers, Judson Kershner, Sherman Kershner and Gale Kershner.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Needmore Bible Church. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dott, Pa.

A viewing will be at the church Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Needmore Bible Church, Needmore, Pa. 17238.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.

Paul J. Shollay

Paul James Shollay, 66, of 15914 Clarence Pike Drive, Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, also is survived by nieces and nephews.

Patricia A. Johnston

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Patricia Ann Johnston, 57, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born May 19, 1940, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Otis Lee and Helen June DeHaven Parsons.

She formerly was employed by American Deli in the Blue Ridge Outlet, Martinsburg.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas Johnston; two sisters, Glenda Robinson and Shirley Orndorff, both of Martinsburg; one brother, Gerald Lee Parsons of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jerry Parsons.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Isabelle N. Daley

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Isabelle N. Daley, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, and formerly of 152 E. Addison Ave., Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late James Allen and Della Metz Glass.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paerrie Daley, in 1977.

She was employed by the former Waynesboro Knitting Mill for 54 years.

She attended First Assembly of God Church, Greencastle.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy L. Yeager of Chambersburg; one son, Robert P. Daley of Greencastle; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Walter G. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

William T. Driscoll

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - William T. Driscoll, 74, of 1069 Lincoln Way West, and formerly of Hudson, Mass., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at Caledonia Manor, Fayetteville, Pa.

Born March 23, 1923, in Long Branch, N.J., he was the son of the late William F. and Florence E. Layton Driscoll.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Smith Driscoll, in 1988.

He was employed in shipping-receiving by a number of clothing distributors.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He is survived by one sister, Kathryn Yanchuk of Chambersburg; and two brothers, Allen B. Driscoll of Chambersburg and Gerard E. Driscoll of Fayetteville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler will be celebrant. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Lloyd L. Carnahan

DADE CITY, Fla. - Lloyd L. Carnahan, 79, of Dade City, and formerly of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at his home.

He was born in Oliver Township, Pa.

He was employed as a civil engineer in road construction.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.

A mason, he was a member of Clairton Lodge 277, Clairton, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Carnahan; two sons, Larry Carnahan of Warfordsburg and Lynn Carnahan of Carmichaels, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Alice Montgomery of Victorville, Calif., and Joann Fischer of Haines City, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Oakley Funeral Home, 11441 Highway 301, Dade City. W.G. "Buddy" Hollyfield will officiate. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pasco-Hernando Hospice, 7066 Fort King Road, Zephyrhills, Fla. 33541.

Clyde L. Barnhart Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Clyde L. Barnhart Jr., 75, of 5313 Cumberland Highway, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at his home.

Born July 24, 1922, in Mont Alto, Pa., he was the son of the late Clyde L. Barnhart Sr. and Mary E. Reed Barnhart.

He was a 1941 graduate of Hooversville High School, Waynesboro, Pa.

He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot as a warehouse foreman, retiring in 1977 after 31 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Cold Spring United Brethren Church, Fayetteville, Pa.

He was a member of Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion; Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW; and Disabled American Veterans Association, all of Chambersburg.

He is survived by three daughters, Dorothy A. O'Malley of Longmont, Colo., Carol L. Burkholder of Chambersburg and Diane M. Zeigler of Hagerstown; two sons, Robert E. Barnhart of Shippensburg, Pa., and Clyde L. Barnhart III of Chambersburg; four sisters, Grace Stowell of East Berlin, Pa., Betty Hoffman of Waynesboro, Pa., Verda Mohn of Mont Alto, Pa., and Janet Myers of New Oxford, Pa.; one brother, Robert Barnhart of Waynesboro; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Barnhart.

Services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Thomas S. Mellott will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, with military graveside services conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Richard E. Helman

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Richard E. "Pap" Helman, 77, of 244 Garfield St., died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 8, 1920, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late David E. and Caroline Sprenkle Helman.

He attended school in a one-room school house.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. He served from 1944 to 1946 with Co. H, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Division, as a heavy mortar crewman. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star.

In his early life, he worked on farms, on the Quincy Township road crew, at Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, and Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing, Hagerstown. After leaving the Army, he returned to Fairchild as a lead man and milling machine operator, retiring in 1982 after 40 years.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758, Waynesboro; and a life member of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695 and Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, both of Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred G. Talhelm Helman, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1938; 13 daughters, Patricia A. Lawver of Gettysburg, Pa., Cindi K. Bell of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Deanna S. Himes of Smithsburg, Wanda J. Miller, Sherry A. Chandler, Sandra L. Helman, Deborah C. Mentzer, Melissa F. Woodring, Brenda J. Pryor, Barbara J. Fisher, Lisa S. Stephey, Vicki Helman-Jones and Stacey D. Helman, all of Waynesboro; three sons, Richard G. Helman, Douglas K. Helman Sr. and Jeffrey L. Helman, all of Waynesboro; four brothers, Robert Helman, of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa., Glenn Helman of Hagerstown, Eugene Helman of Fayetteville, Pa., and Carroll Helman of Chambersburg; 43 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelva Jean Helman; one son, James E. Helman; five sisters; four brothers; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Gregory A. Helman will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with graveside military services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Verna I.T. Mellott

WEST NANTICOKE, Pa. - Verna I. Truax Mellott, 86, of West Nanticoke, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at Birchwood Nursing Center, Nanticoke, Pa.

Born Sept. 5, 1911, in Wells Tannery, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Hunter and Celia Berkstresser Truax.

She was employed by Horton's Restaurant in Waterfall, Pa., in the early 1970s. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Waterfall.

She is survived by her husband, Chester G. Mellott of McConnellsburg, Pa., whom she married on Feb. 12, 1934; one daughter, Marilyn M. Anderson of McConnellsburg; three sons, Neill A. Mellott of West Nanticoke, Huey G. Mellott of Chambersburg, Pa., and Hunter G. Mellott of Lebanon, Pa.; one sister, Alice Baker of Baltimore; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. David Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Wells Valley Roaring Run Cemetery, Wells Tannery.

A viewing will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Joseph K. Stone

Joseph Kenneth Stone, 83, formerly of Woodcrest Village, Hagerstown, who died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, attended Church of Christ of Hagerstown. His survivors include a son, Thomas T. Stone Sr. of Chambersburg, Pa.

Charles R. Mayes Sr.

Charles Ray Mayes Sr., 76, of 20222 Trovinger Mills Road, Hagerstown, who died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel C. Mayes, in 1995.
