Katie E. Hesben

Katie Elizabeth Hesben, 95, of Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.

Born April 27, 1902, in Clarke County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Louise Coxen Smith.

She was employed as a domestic worker.

She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Barbara Rutherford of Ranson, W.Va., Alva Cooper of New York, Louatha James of Manassas, Va., Van Smith of Berryville, Va., Maurice Smith, Lionel Smith, and Wilma Jean Wilson, all of Maryland; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Enders and Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, Va. The Rev. Dwight Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Milton Valley Cemetery, Berryville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Frances A. Karn

Frances A. "Jenny" Karn, 76, of 1747 Edgewood Hill Circle, Apartment 101, Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. "Bud" and Martha E. Delauter Nigh.

Her husband, Wilfred L. "Willie" Karn, died in 1973.

She retired from C&P Telephone.

She was a member of First Christian Church, and the Ever Ready and Updegraff Bible Class.

She was a member of Telephone Pioneers Association, and Happy Face Travel Club.

She is survived by her companion of nearly 20 years, Lewis Horman; three sons, Terry E. Karn of Sharpsburg, and Douglas L. Karn and C. Kirk Karn, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Richard W. Nigh of Funkstown and Edwin L. Nigh of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul E. Nigh and Howard L. "Tiny" Nigh.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred Harris and the Rev. Robert L. Regenold will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, today from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Mary F. Baker

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Frances Baker, 81, of Mount Olive Road, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born May 27, 1916, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late James P. and Mary Frances Stockman Unglesbee.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Woodrow Wilson Mercer, in 1968, and by her second husband, Raymond Vernon Baker, in 1978.

She had retired as a seamstress from Sagner Sewing Factory, Frederick.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ranson, W.Va.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71 in Charles Town, W.Va.; and Owls Club, Redman Club, and Democrat Club, all in Frederick.

She is survived by one brother, James Unglesbee of Taneytown, Md.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by one son, Richard "Dick" Mercer Sr.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Pastor Mike Withem will officiate. Burial will be in St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Carl W. Mason

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Carl W. Mason, 76, of Route 1, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born Dec. 12, 1920, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles William and Clara Mason.

He attended Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty L. Kitchen of Gerrardstown; one sister, Hazel Puffenburger of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two brothers, Walter Mason of Gerrardstown, and Mervin Mason of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; a close friend, Geraldine Seeders of Green Springs, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth June Mason; two sons, Carl Delmont and Martin LeRoy Mason; and three brothers, Ralph Mason, Floyd Mason and Paul Mason.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Louise Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Arden, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Margaret R. Bailey

Margaret Rebecca Bailey, 85, of 928 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997, at Clearview Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born June 24, 1912, in Philippi, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John William and Ellen Viola Shaffer Bailey.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft Inc. after 29 years.

She was a member of Longmeadow Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by three nieces, whom she raised, Rebecca A. Barkley of Hagerstown, Judith E. Kershner of York, Pa., and Sara J. Spangler of Waynesboro, Pa.; one nephew, whom she raised, John M. Spangler of Rehobeth, Del.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown. The Pastor Byrl E. Shaver will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont, Md.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Longmeadow Church of the Brethren, 19642 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

D. Bud Barnhart

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - D. Bud "Teaberry" Barnhart, 71, of RD 1, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg.

Born March 13, 1926, in Andover, Pa., he was the son of the late Lewis and E. Pearl Fagley Barnhart.

He was employed as a laborer.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Licking Creek Fisherman's Association.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Lowans of Greencastle, Pa., and Goldie Strait of Sycamore, Ohio; one brother, Earl Barnhart of Harrisonville, Pa.; two stepsisters, May Oberholtzer of Maryland and Ricky Bain of Big Cove Tannery, Pa.; and nieces, nephews, stepnieces, and stepnephews.

He was preceded in death by two stepsisters and three stepbrothers.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Siloam United Methodist Church, Harrisonville. The Rev. Charles Gummo and the Rev. Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. and at the church Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Rose M. Wilhide

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Rose Marie Wilhide, 62, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born Feb. 1, 1935, in Hagerstown, was the daughter of the late Orville Joe and Eleanor Furry Shinham.

She was a 1953 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She was the former club manager of VFW Memorial Post 3522, Charles Town.

She was of the Catholic faith.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Memorial Post 3522, Charles Town, and Ladies Auxiliary of the Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, Charles Town.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Harold R. "Willie" Wilhide; one son, Harold R. Wilhide Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one sister, Jane Keller of Sharpsburg; and one brother, William Shinham of Falling Waters, W.Va.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chetock will be celebrant. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Boyd D. Cox Sr.

WOOD RIVER, Neb. - Boyd D. Cox Sr., of Wood River, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, in Grand Island, Neb.

He is survived by his wife, Lavonne Cox; one son, Gerald Munn of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren, Gregory Munn of Hagerstown and Wendy Munn of Daytona Beach, Fla.

Services will be held today in Wood River.

Mary Orr

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Mary "Evelyn" Orr, 87, of 112 Coldspring Road, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 13, 1910, in Manotick, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Elizabeth F. Doyle Clarke.

Her husband, Douglas A. Orr, died in 1996.

She formerly resided in Chambersburg, Tequesta, Fla., and Southern Pines, N.C.

She was a 1927 graduate of KARS High School in Ontario.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Kathleen Gardner of Cincinnati, and Louise Evelyn Orr of Charleston, S.C.; one son, James Douglas Orr of Fayetteville; three sisters, Kay Meehan of Rochester Hill, Mich., Olive Denton of Sarasota, Fla., and Elizabeth Johnson of Sandusky, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with Monsignor Thomas R. Brenner, as celebrant. Burial will be private.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Spencer A. DeHaven

INWOOD, W.Va. - Spencer A. DeHaven, 81, of Inwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997, at Silver Age Services Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 27, 1916, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late G. Cecil and Mary Ellen Mason DeHaven.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen V. DeHaven, in 1983.

He was a self-employed farmer.

He was a member of Pikeside United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Alecia Roberts and JoAnn Barker, both of Martinsburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Brannon, Ivy Hutzler and Ella DeHaven; and three brothers, Hillary DeHaven, Alonzo DeHaven and Ozy DeHaven.

Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale Road, Martinsburg. The Rev. Michael G. Marsh will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
