Darrell G. Spring

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Darrell Gene Spring, 40, of Kearneysville, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1957, in Hagerstown, he is the son of Gene Ulysses and Doris Jean Holliday Spring of Great Cacapon, W.Va.

He was a 1975 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School, and a graduate of West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.

He was a software engineer with Lockheed-Martin in Manassas, Va.

He was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tina Charlene Yost Spring; one daughter, Jessica Marie Spring, at home; two sons, Matthew Ryan Spring and Daniel Alexander Spring, both at home; one sister, Lisa Kay Miller of Great Cacapon; two brothers, Roger Deron Spring and Bradley Blaine Spring, both of Great Cacapon; paternal grandmother, Nellie Unger Spring of Great Cacapon; one niece, three nephews, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ronald Spring; paternal grandfather, Raymond Blaine Spring; and maternal grandparents, Scott and Ruth Porter Holliday.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Great Cacapon. The Rev. Roger Burtner and the Rev. Malcolm Cadd will officiate. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Monday at the cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Great Cacapon, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Darrell G. Spring Family Memorial Fund, HC 62, Box 103F, Great Cacapon, W.Va. 25422.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., in Berkeley Springs.

Laurence W. Lloyd Sr.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Laurence W. Lloyd Sr., 93, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 5, 1904, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late William Walter and Mary Agnes Middlekauff Lloyd.

His wife, Susan Ellen Lloyd, died in 1994.

He graduated from Charles Town High School, and attended Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

He was a cooperative weather observer for the National Weather Service in Sterling, Va., for many years. He previously retired after 43 years of service as the manager of Western Union Telegraph Co. in Charles Town.

He was an active member and worker of Zion Episcopal Church, where he was a choir member for 70 years and formerly served on the vestry. He also was a member of the Order of Jerusalem of the Episcopal Diocease of West Virginia.

He was a former member of the Lions Club in Charles Town, and Independent Fire Company in Charles Town.

He is survived by one daughter, S. Ellen Akin of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; one son, Laurence W. Lloyd Jr. of Charles Town; five grandchildren, Laurence Lloyd III, Marian L. Dorsey, Susan E. Mook, Robert M. Akin IV, and Johanna C. Stolecki; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town. The Rev. John Bower will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Episcopal Church, 221 E. Washington St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Benjamin F. Nichols

Benjamin Franklin Nichols, 84, formerly of 923 St. Clair St., Hagerstown, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at the home of his son, 535 Bengate Road, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 4, 1913, in Lonaconing, Md., he was the son of the late Henry and Pearl Cameron Nichols.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lee Nichols, in 1993.

He retired from the Maryland Correctional Institution in 1975, after 37 years of service. During the last 13 years he served as assistant superintendent in charge of custody and security.

He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown.

He was a life member of BPO Elks 63 of Cumberland, Md., joining in 1943; AARP; and Retirees Chapter 152 MCEA of Maryland.

He is survived by one son, Franklin C. Nichols of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Michael Nichols of Greencastle, Pa., and Mark Nichols of Darby, Mont.; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Wagner and Peggy Dormio.

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Ailstock will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

James R. Brice

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - James Roy Brice, 28, of 391 Potomac Heights Road, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, as a result of a traffic accident in Falling Waters.

Born Dec. 29, 1968, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Larry James and Susan Diane Long Brice of Smithsburg.

He was a 1986 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

He was employed by Jefferson Distributing in Martinsburg, W.Va.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lisa Diane Hitt Brice of Falling Waters; one daughter, Kayla Diane Brice, at home; one brother, David Michael Brice of Smithsburg; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Long of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, James and Bernice Brice of Thurmont, Md.; one nephew; aunts; and uncles.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kayla Diane Brice, 391 Potomac Heights Road, Falling Waters, W.Va. 25419.

Doris J. Rhude

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Doris J. Rhude, 65, of 200 N. Main St., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born March 2, 1932, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Clarence Everette of Gettysburg, Pa., and the late Catherine N. Benner Everette.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles N. Rhude, in 1979.

She received a teaching certificate from Swanee County in Live Oak, Fla.

She was a teacher in public schools in Live Oak. She was a house parent for Scotland School for Veterans Children for 3 1/2 years. She was retired.

She was a member of First Church of God, Chambersburg.

In addition to her father, she is survived by two sons, Charles N. Rhude Jr. of Florida and Clarence M. Rhude of Macclenny, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

She donated her body to the Humanities Gifts.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Anne W. Rinehart

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Anne W. Rinehart, 91, of 6375 Chambersburg Road, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Piney Mountain Nursing Home, Franklin Township, Pa.

Born Feb. 8, 1906, in Bellwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Middleton P. and Katherine R. McHugh Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy F. Rinehart.

She was a 1924 graduate of Bellwood High School.

She was a retired office worker.

She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Chambersburg, Pa.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Martha Curtis Chapter 342, Chambersburg; and Association of Democratic Women of Chambersburg.

She is survived by three sisters, Harriet Heckler of North Fort Myers, Fla., June Diffenderfer of Fayetteville and Doris J. Walders of Uncasville, Conn.; one brother, Sager Williams of Edgewater, Md.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Rotherberger; three sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Monday.

Bruce Lionel Butts

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Bruce Lionel Butts, 75, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, in Stephenson, Va.

Born March 19, 1922, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late George L. and Ella Furley Butts.

He was a retired mechanic.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 896 and American Legion Post 14.

He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Lloyd of Berryville, Va., and Lois F. Didawick of Hagerstown; two sons, Richard Butts of Stephenson, and Bruce A. Butts Sr. of Clearbrook, Va.; three sisters, Dora Allen, Lucinda Roy, and Edna Simpson, all of Martinsburg; one brother, James F. Butts of Berkeley County; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Aikens and Georgia Woodward; and one brother, David L. Butts.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, Martinsburg. The Rev. Edward Messick will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Goldie V. Cross

Goldie Viola Cross, 89, of 1344 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 30, 1908, in Berryville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Newton and Bertha Goode McDonald.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoye William Cross, in 1969.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Hagerstown and member of Loyal Daughters Sunday School Class.

She is survived by one son, Leon William Cross of Hagerstown; two sisters, Beulah McFarland of Hagerstown, and Nannie Silman of Berryville; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one son, Howard Edmund Cross; one sister; and five brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown.

Virginia M. Metz

BOONSBORO - Virginia May Metz, 54, of 21135 Reno Monument Road, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1943, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Carl Lemuel and Gloria J. Hutzell Cline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Enoch Metz, in 1994.

She was a homemaker and an Avon representative.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Debra Sue Metz of Hagerstown, and Sherry Ann Metz of Boonsboro; one son, Timothy James Metz of Hagerstown; one sister, Patricia A. Mills of Hagerstown; one brother, Jerry Lee Cline Sr. of Greencastle, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Sunday after noon.

Pasquale J. Petrullo

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Pasquale John "Pat" Petrullo, 79, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at his home.

Born April 20, 1918, in Northumberland, Pa., he was the son of the late Angelico and Maria Petrullo.

He was a graduate of Michigan State University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees.

He was a retired lumber merchandiser.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Spring Petrullo; three daughters, Katherine Petrullo Heleen of Norton, Mass., Anne Whitaker of Shepherdstown, and Paula Russo of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.; two sons, Christopher Petrullo of Chelmsford, Mass., and Michael Petrullo of Cordova, Tenn.; three sisters, Caroline Petrullo, Angeline Petrullo, and Mary Petrullo, all of Northumberland, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosie Gallo and Anna Haddon; and one brother, Frank Petrullo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at St. Monica Catholic Church in Sunbury, Pa. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown, where a wake service will be at 3:45 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Panhandle, P.O. Box 2577, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25402.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.
