Dana L. Mentzer

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Dana Lee Mentzer, 17, of 4680 Carbaugh Road, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, as a result of an automobile accident on Old Forge Road, near South Mountain, Pa.

Born May 17, 1980, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Wanda Staley Mentzer McCardell of South Mountain and the late Daniel H. Mentzer Jr., who died in 1991.

He was a 10th grade student at Waynesboro Senior High School.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, William McCardell; maternal grandparents, Eugene and Joan Vanderburg Staley of South Mountain; paternal grandparents, Daniel H. and Helen Mowen Mentzer Sr. of South Mountain; one sister, Danielle Mentzer of South Mountain; one half-sister, Kimberly Stull of Tomstown, Pa.; one brother, Derrick Mentzer of South Mountain; one half-brother, Daniel Mentzer III of Quincy, Pa.; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. William D. Kauffman will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ida F. N. Leidig

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ida Florence Nowell Leidig, 87, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, and formerly of 13694 Grant Shook Road, Greencastle, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 19, 1910, in State Line, Pa., she was the daughter of the late J. Wesley and Florence M. Izer Nowell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Leidig, in 1995.

She was a homemaker.

She was a life member of Trinity United Church of Christ, State Line, where she served for many years as a teacher in the Children's Sunday School.

She is survived by two sons, Harold W. Leidig of Greencastle and Charles A. Leidig of Hagerstown; one sister, Gladys I. Rudisill of Frederick, Md.; two brothers, George R. Nowell of Chambersburg and William E. Nowell of Scranton, Pa.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Palmer; and three brothers, Harold G. Nowell, Ralph C. Nowell, and Charles Nowell.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, Center Square, State Line. The Rev. Donald Reese and Chaplain Kenneth Wenger will officiate. Burial will be in Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line.

There will be no public viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Building Fund of the Trinity United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 266, State Line, Pa. 17263.

Ruby E.C. Pryor

CASCADE - Ruby E. Canfield Pryor, 73, of 14303 McAfee Hill Road, and a resident of Avalon Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born Sept. 1, 1924, in Elkins, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jerry D. and Elizabeth B. Shoemaker Canfield.

She was a 1942 graduate of Elkins High School.

Her husband, Clarence "Junie" Pryor Jr., died in 1972. They were married March 19, 1970.

She was employed as a waitress by Summit Plaza Restaurant in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., for a number of years.

She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Sabillasville, Md.

She also was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by one son, Michael L. Sullivan of Glen Burnie, Md.; two sisters, Anna B. Campbell of Cascade, and Jane M. Salyers of Whitewater, Wis.; one brother, Jim Canfield of Chandler, Ariz.; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. George Tuggle, pastor, and Ernest W.P. Thayil, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery in Cascade.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Carl E. Boyd

Carl E. Boyd, 53, of 12 S. Walnut St., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at his home.

Born Nov. 15, 1943, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harvey F. and Mabel Boyd Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. Clark Boyd, in 1987.

He was retired from Washington, D.C. Sub Sanitary Commission, where he worked from 1958 to 1980. He had also worked at Dunkin Donuts.

He is survived by one son, Robert Boyd of Williamsport; two brothers, Roger Boyd of Salisbury, Md. and Harvey F. Boyd Jr. of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.

Service arrangements by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Merrill E. Dawson

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Merrill Edward Dawson, 95, of 875 Day Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Howard County General Hospital, Columbia, Md.

Born Sept. 18, 1902, in Fitchburg, Mass., he was the son of the late William and Jane Lawton Dawson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence J. Dawson, in 1981.

He was employed by Herald and Review Publishing Association, retiring after 46 years of service.

He was a member of Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris F. Dawson of Sykesville; two daughters, Shirley M. Reading of Hagerstown and Marjorie J. Woodruff of Deltona, Fla.; two sons, Robert M. Dawson of Bethesda, Md. and Donald E. Dawson of Hagerstown; two stepsons, Jonathan S. Follmer of Bethesda and George H. Follmer of Germantown, Md.; 11 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren;13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; and one brother.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Elder Eugene Durand and Elder Dan Goddard will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Frederick Seventh-day Adventist Church Building Fund, 6437 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, Md. 21703.

Elmer A. Baker

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Elmer Andrew Baker, 72, of 9613 Harmony Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick.

Born March 30, 1925, in Harmony, Md., he was the son of the late Henry Benton and Jean Adele Meiklejohn Baker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Baker, in 1995.

He was employed as a bridge foreman with Frederick County Roads Department, until his retirement.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a life long member of Harmony Church of the Brethren, Myersville.

He was a member of Valley Memorial Post 9 AMVETS, Middletown, Md.

He is survived by two daughters, Doris "Pete" Bidle of Middletown and Joan Marie Baker of Myersville; two sons, Thomas J. Baker of Middletown and David L. Baker of Doubs, Md.; two sisters, Etta Mae Wisner and Evelyn Haines, both of Myersville; one brother, Richard M. Baker of Myersville; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Baker.

Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Harmony Church of the Brethren, Myersville. The Rev. Tracey Wiser will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Myersville.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, anytime, at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The family will receive friends today and Saturday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation will also be Sunday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parking Lot Fund of Harmony Church of the Brethren, c/o Lois Willard, 3916 Highland Ave., Myersville, Md. 21773.

Robert L. Howerton

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Lee Howerton, Route 1 Box 351, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at his home.

Born in Sunman, Ind., he was the son of the late Joseph and Martha Zirkle Howerton.

He was a graduate of New Market High School, New Market, Va.; and Imperial Valley College, Imperial, Calif.

He was retired from the U.S. Government Underwater Explosive Research and Development Center, as a photographer. At the time of his death, he was an independent truck owner and operator.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Keiter Howerton; one daughter, Kristin Lee Howerton, at home; one son, Robert Scott Howerton of El Centro, Calif.; five sisters, Genevieve Howerton, Winifred Salyards and Betty Mathias, all of New Market, Louise Alcorn of Ruffin, N.C. and Sara Wills of Timberville, Va.; two brothers, George Howerton of Woodstock, Va. and William Howerton of New Market; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Valley Funeral Chapel Bowmans Crossing, Edinburg, Va. The Rev. Everett Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Zirkle Family Cemetery South of New Market.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel in Edinburg.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Berkeley Baptist Church, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John Gilbert will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his memory to benefit the education of his daughter, Kristin Lee Howerton. Contributions may be sent to Blue Ridge Bank, 305 N. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Gladys E. Williams

Gladys Eileen Williams, 81, of 1010 Brinker Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 24, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry H. and Ida Mae Shrader Semler Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hamilton Douglas Williams, in 1976.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three sons, Charles W. Baechtel, Thomas E. Baechtel and James R. Baechtel, all of Hagerstown; six sisters, Hilda Baker, Betty Butts and Peggy Donegan, all of Hagerstown, Winifred Vickers of Sharpsburg, Evelyne Clouser of Fairplay and Nancy Cronise of Boonsboro; three brothers, Roy Semler of Sharpsburg, Lloyd Semler of Hagerstown and Joseph Semler of Clear Spring; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Eby; two brothers, Harold Semler and Harry Semler Jr.; and one grandchild.

Services will be today at 12:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Steven S. McCullough will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Josephine E. Weagly

HANOVER, Pa. - Josephine Estelle Weagly, 82, formerly of Middletown, Md., died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at Homewood Retirement Center, Hanover.

Born Jan. 21, 1915, in Frederick, Md., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Clinton B. and Viola E. Kefauver Weagly.

She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from Hood College, Frederick, and accepted a position in the dietary department at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. After World War II she became director of the dietary department at Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio; a position she held until her retirement in 1976.

She was a first lieutenant in the U. S. Army Medical Corps, from 1943 to 1946.

She was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown.

She is survived by several cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. Suzanne Smith Morris, associate pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Middletown.

Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Fund of Christ Reformed Church, P.O. Box 188, Middletown, Md. 21769.

J. Omer Caron

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - J. Omer Caron, 91, of 30 N. Grant St., and a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home in Chambersburg, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 26, 1905, in New Brunswick, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late Auguste and Lumina Lagace Caron.

He was employed by Florence Contractors, Ely Tree Service, and then by Landis Tool Co. for a number of years. Prior to his retirement in 1970, he was a crane and engine operator and yard worker at Frick Co. in Waynesboro for 20 years.

He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waynesboro.

He also was a member of Waynesboro Knights of Columbus Council 2068; and a charter member of Waynesboro South Chapter AARP 2977.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred I. Roth Caron, whom he married Nov. 24, 1960; and nine half brothers and half sisters, Berthe Germaine of Quebec City, Canada, Bertrand Caron, Gerard Caron, Aramond Caron, Roland Caron, Gabriel Pepin, Georgette Caron, John Claude Caron and Andrew Caron, all of LaPrairie, Quebec, Canada.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Auguste Caron, Stanalas Caron, Maurice Caron and Adrian Caron; an infant sister; stepmother, Elmina Lagace Caron; one half sister, Rachel Boubblier; and one half brother, Lucien Caron.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hemler as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery, Waynesboro.

There will be no public viewing. A rosary service will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew School Fund, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268; or to Franklin County Nursing Home, 201 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
