Mabel L.J. Spriggs

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Mabel Leona J. Spriggs, 72, of P.O. Box 44, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at her home.

Born June 21, 1925, in McConnellsburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter H. Jefferson and Mabel Brown.

She was a homemaker.

She was a lifetime member of Cito AME Church, and held various offices such as trustee over the years.

She is survived by two daughters, Minnie F. Jefferson and Diane L. Jefferson, both of McConnellsburg; one son, Walter L. Jefferson of McConnellsburg; two sisters, Rosealee Loner and Dora Branche, both of Mount Union, Pa.; one brother, Mac Brown of Harrisburg, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren. She raised the following children, Shirley Thomas, Verna Pettyjohn, Sandra Jefferson, Teresa Jefferson, Sabrina Chism, Gregory Jefferson, Douglas Thomas, Clifford Thomas and David Thomas.

She was preceded in death by one son, John Albert Jefferson; and three brothers, Arthur Jefferson, Charles Brown and Robert Brown.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cito AME Church. The Rev. Marcellius Norris will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Inc. in McConnellsburg.

Louise B. Shuck

Louise Bartles Shuck, 79, of 14710 Byers Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport.

Born March 16, 1918, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Victor Orville and Nellie Repp Bartles.

She attended Maugansville Grade School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a former member of Trinity United Brethren Church in State Line, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Martin S. Shuck, whom she married June 23, 1945; two sons, Terry L. Shuck of Hagerstown, and Steven L. Shuck of Waynesboro; one sister, Naomi Ardinger of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. Clarence H. Showalter, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Frank Prosper

Frank Prosper, 74, of Hollyhock Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at his home.

Born Dec. 11, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John and Frances Noveli Prosper.

His wife of 49 years, Helen O. Prosper, died May 5, 1997.

He was employed with Pangborn Corp., retiring in 1985. He was previously employed with Fairchild Aircraft and Certain-Teed Products Corp. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936 and Goodwill Athletic Association; and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 694 for 35 years, AMVETS Post 10, AARP, and retired United Auto Workers No. 842.

He is survived by five daughters, Linda Lou Kearns of Martinsburg, W.Va., Sheilah Jean Greer of Colonial Heights, Va., Frances Ann Gladhill, Debbie Kay Vinson and Edith Sue Kinnamont, all of Hagerstown; one sister, Jaum F. Kline of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers and one half-sister.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by VFW Post 1936.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Roland H. Roe

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Roland H. Roe, 85, of Shepherdstown, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Moss, W.Va., he was the son of the late Cass and Rosa Clovis Roe.

His wife, Inez Bailey Roe, preceded him in death.

He retired from Columbia Gas.

He was a member of Moss United Methodist Church.

He also was a member of Clendenin Lodge 126 AF&AM.

He is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Roe Butcher of Shepherdstown; one sister, Irene Stout of Morgantown, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Ellyson Mortuary in Glenville, W.Va. The Rev. Robert Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Sand Fork Cemetery in Sand Fork, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m., and at Ellyson Mortuary Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Clyde M. Luckett

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Clyde Marshall Luckett, 82, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 12, 1914, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Sloan and Rebecca Luckett Walker.

He retired from the dietary department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, after 17 years of service.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He received the Good Conduct Medal with Clasp, American Theater Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anna C. "Cole" Luckett; five daughters, Shirley McDonald, Carol Luckett and Delores Luckett, all of Charles Town, Rosella Rowley and Cynthia McCann, both of Hagerstown; two sons, Clyde Luckett Jr. and John Luckett, both of Charles Town; one sister, Elizabeth Mitchell of Charles Town; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl "Buss" Luckett; and Eugene Luckett.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Bishop Eugene Baltimore will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Gibsontown, W.Va.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Allen C. Bingaman

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Allen C. Bingaman, 94, of 5192 Rice Hollow Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1903, in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late John C. and Eva Mummert Bingaman.

His wife, Hazel P. Carbaugh Bingaman, died in 1990. They were married Dec. 23, 1921.

He was a mechanic for Hoacklander Ford in Greencastle for more than 40 years, retiring in 1970. Following retirement, he became the caretaker of Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle for a number of years.

He was a former member of Macedonia United Brethren Church near Bino, Pa.

He is survived by four daughters, Evelyn H. Heintzelman, Cleone "Kay" Ebersole and Floe P. Walck, all of Greencastle, and Betty J. Rock of Mercersburg, Pa.; three sons, Donald E. Bingaman, Richard H. Bingaman and Marvin "Whitey" Bingaman, all of Greencastle; one sister, Alice Davis of Waynesboro; 44 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; 48 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mae Turner; one son, John Bingaman; three sisters; three brothers; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble and the Rev. Curtis E. Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mabel M. Booth

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Mabel Mae Booth, 88, of RD 2, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Calidonia Manor in Fayetteville, Pa.

Born March 12, 1909, in Warfordsburg, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Bertha Virginia Bair Booth.

She was a member of Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church in Warfordsburg.

She is survived by one niece, Donna J. Lynch of Warfordsburg; and one nephew, Homer E. Smith of Webster, Pa.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dessie Catherine Booth, Ethel P. Smith and Myrtle Evelyn Booth.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Fulton County Home Nursing Agency, 102 Lincoln Way West, McConnellsburg, Pa. 17233.

Mazie I.W. Bowman

QUINCY, Pa. - Mazie Irene Willard Bowman, 82, of 7990 Tomstown Road, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born May 7, 1915, in Foxville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Edward Winton and Clara Easter McAfee Willard.

Her husband, Charles William Bowman Sr., died July 19, 1997. They were married Aug. 12, 1936.

Early in life, she worked at the Knitting Mill in Cascade, Rising Sun Restaurant in Rising Sun, Md., as a chambermaid for Bessie Darling in Deerfield, Md., at Quincy Orphanage in Quincy, Pa., in the laundry department, then in the housekeeping department of Waynesboro Hospital, and last did seasonal work for D.M. Wertz Orchards.

She was a member of Fayetteville Church of God.

She is survived by two sons, Charles W. "Bill" Bowman Jr. of Chambersburg, Pa., and Joseph M. "Joe" Bowman of Quincy; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, five brothers, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. George S. Mouer Sr., pastor, and Vaughn E. Kipe, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Carma B.K. Mathias

Carma B. Kennell Mathias, 90, a resident of Ravenwood Nursing Home in Hagerstown, and formerly of 307 Park St., Waynesboro, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born April 22, 1907, in Topeka, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Alba S. and Rose Myers Kennell.

She and her husband owned and operated Mathias' Tavern in Waynesboro from 1945 until their retirement in 1969.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph W. Mathias, whom she married May 11, 1930; one daughter, JoAnn Hare of Haddonfield, N.J.; one son, Lynn Mathias of Smithsburg; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Lans E. Alexis will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ravenwood Nursing Home, 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Dorothy M. Broyles

QUINCY, Pa. - Dorothy M. Broyles, 92, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 700 Park St., Waynesboro, Pa., and Hoover House, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born March 5, 1905, in Stanley, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Susan Walker Offenbacker.

Her husband, Hollis J. Broyles, died in 1988. They were married Sept. 26, 1925.

She was employed by McNew's General Store, Fairview Avenue, in Waynesboro.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro.

She also was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by one son, Kenton H. Broyles of Waynesboro.

She was preceded in death by four sisters.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Jay E. Zimmerman, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

There will be no public viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to Nicodemus Center for Ceramic Studies, P.O. Box 776, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.
