William A. George

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - William A. "Shorty" George, 74, of Hedgesville, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at his home.

Born March 3, 1923, in Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward F. and Sarah Cook George.

His wife, Mildred Fahnestock George, preceded him in death.

He was a retired orchard worker.

He is survived by one daughter, Debra M. Oldham of Hedgesville; three sons, William R. George, Richard D. George and Larry W. George, all of Hedgesville; two sisters, Mattie Starlipher of Cherry Run, W.Va., and Luella Jordan of Marlowe, W.Va.; six brothers, Eston George of Romney, W.Va., Arthur George of Arlington, Texas, Carl George of Golden, Colo., Harry George of Hedgesville, and Casper George and Luther George, both of Martinsburg; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Evers George and Lester George; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Jack Rudy, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Michael E. Schoppert

RANSON, W.Va. - Michael E. Schoppert, 41, of Ranson, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, in Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.

Born Jan. 15, 1956, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Dorothy Woods Edwards of Martinsburg and the late Charles H. Schoppert.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Melody Orr Schoppert; two brothers, Charles E. Schoppert Sr. of Kearneysville, W.Va., and George S. Schoppert of Martinsburg; and two aunts.

Services will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Fred A. Greenfield will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Margo Jeffries

SMITHSBURG - Margo Jeffries, 58, of 22840 Federal Lookout Road, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

She was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Baltimore, Md.

She attended Harvest Baptist Church, Hagerstown.

Services will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. The Rev. James E. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Woodrow Troutman

Woodrow "Woody" Troutman, 85, of 11813 Partridge Trail, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, and Frostburg, Md., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 7, 1912, in Wellersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late James D. and Christina Shaffer Troutman.

He was retired from General Motors Corporation, prop shaft department, Cleveland.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Rizer Troutman; one daughter, Carol Troutman, at home; two sisters, Thelma Doke of Street, Md., and Mary Soltis of Uniontown, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alan Troutman and Zane Troutman.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg. The Rev. Ellis Kretschmer will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

William C. Day

SHREWSBURY, Pa. - William Curtis Day, 78, of Shrewsbury, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at York Hospital.

Born Aug. 17, 1919, in White Hall, Md., he was the son of the late Ralph and Rachael S. Nelson Day.

His wife, Doris M. Dickmyer Day, preceded him in death.

He was a 1937 graduate of New Freedom High School. He attended Elizabethtown College on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor of science degree.

He played semi-pro baseball for New Freedom from 1937 to 1940 , and played for the York Adams County League. In 1941 he played pro baseball for the Lancaster Red Roses.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was assigned to the 210th General Hospital, and received the rank of first lieutenant in 1943 at Fort Gulick, Panama. Before his discharge in 1945, he was a microbiologist at Moore General Hospital and Lawson Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

He was awarded a master's degree in science from the University of Maryland. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry in 1952.

He worked as a virologist until 1953, and then worked at Fort Detrick Biological Labs in Frederick, Md., as an aerobiologist. There he received an award as Outstanding Scientist in 1956. In 1971, he was transferred to Edgewood Arsenal in Edgewood, Md., where he was a microbiologist and biotechnologist. He retired from civil service in February 1986.

He was inducted into the New Freedom Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Day of Shrewsbury; one son, Eric V. Day of Myersville, Md.; and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, 24 Second St., New Freedom, Pa. The Rev. John C. Feaster will officiate. Burial will be in New Freedom Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 2997 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, Pa. 17356; or to American Diabetes Association, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 106, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110.

William C. Mundey Jr.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - William C. "Bill" Mundey Jr., 77, of 711 E. Sunrise Blvd., died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at his home.

Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Rev. William Charles Mundey Sr. and Ruth Virginia Campbell Mundey.

He retired from Langalon Amusements of Long Beach.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by one son, William C. Mundey III of Brunswick, Md.; two sisters, Grace V. Pattgen of Melbourne, Fla., and Helen R. Mundey of Hagerstown; one brother, Paul F. Mundey Sr. of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Margaret E. Taylor

BOONSBORO - Margaret E. "Kelly" Taylor, 74, of 20 Schoolhouse Court, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at her home.

Born April 24, 1923, in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Kate Mize Berryman.

She was a former employee of Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md.

A veteran of the Women's Army Corps, she served during World War II. She was a nurse technician at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by four daughters, Vic McVay of Blairsville, Ga., Sandra Gates of Brownsville, Terry Fox of Frederick, Md., and Kelli Lingg of Strasburg, Pa.; two sisters, Dorothy Norman and Carolyn McMahon, both of Stockbridge, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Edwards.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

Helen L. Caniford

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Helen L. Caniford, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Gilbert L. and Sue Rebecca Snyder Thurston.

Her husband, Stanley A. Caniford, died in 1989.

She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, and was a member and captain of the first girls' basketball team at the school.

She retired from 3M Company.

She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church.

She was a member of 3M Retiree's Club, and a bowler.

She is survived by one daughter, Jada J. Caniford Enochs of South Point, Ohio; two sons, Jerry C. Ranels and Terry T. Caniford, both of Martinsburg; one brother, Dr. Harold Thurston of Watertown, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Christopher D. Fowler will officiate. Private burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 315 W. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Melvin H. S. Campbell

Melvin H. "Sonny" Campbell, 63, of 641/2 W. Franklin St., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at his home.

Born March 2, 1934, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Theodore and Flora Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Francis Mamie Campbell, in 1994.

He attended North Street School.

He was employed at Pope Avenue Tire Warehouse.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his companion, Ruth Ann Doleman of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; three daughters, Sonya Campbell, Tawnya Reed and Bobbi Jefferson, all of Rochester, N.Y.; three sons, Michael Campbell and Peter Campbell, both of Rochester, and Thadius Campbell of Buffalo, N.Y.; three stepchildren, Sylvia Doleman of Cambridge, Md., Cynthia Ware of Cape Canaveral, and Petey Doleman of Charles Town, W.Va.; one sister, Geraldine Ware of Hagerstown; two brothers, James Campbell and Cecil Campbell, both of Hagerstown; 22 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one stepchild, Cookie Doleman; four sisters, Laurel Campbell, Agnes Banks, Dorothy Chung, and Catherine Briscoe; and five brothers, Albert Campbell, Charlie Campbell, Perry Campbell, Raymond Campbell, and William Campbell.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Kings Apostle Holiness Church. The Rev. Rick Kee and the Rev. Joe Fowlkes will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, 24 W. Bethel St.

Clare V. Reeder

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Clare Vance Reeder, 94, of 916 Southeast 14 Court, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at her home.

Born May 14, 1903, in Fort Loudon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George and Rose Miller Vance.

She was a former member of the former Fort Loudon Lutheran Church in Fort Loudon.

Her husband, Harvey E. Reeder, died in 1985.

She moved to Florida in 1989, and had resided with her granddaughter, Rosalie Grant, since 1994.

She was an artist and enjoyed working with oils and water.

She is survived by three sons, John Reeder of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., George Reeder of Mercer, Pa., and Randal Reeder of St. Thomas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa. The Rev. Herbert C. Spomer will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg.

There will be no viewing.
