Catherine L. Downs
Catherine Lenora Downs, 83, a resident of Colton Villa Nursing Center, formerly of Charlotte's Home in Boonsboro, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 11, 1914, in Dufur, Ore., she was the daughter of the late Merle and Lily Haynes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Downs, in 1988.
During World War II, she worked in the shipyards at VanPort, Ore. Later she worked in the garment industry and retired as a lab assistant at the University of Oregon Hospital in Portland, Ore.
She was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Melba G. Tooley of Rohrersville; one adopted daughter, Shary Butchek of Salem, Ore.; one son, Raymond W. Downs of Kahei, Hawaii; one adopted son, Thomas Downs of Portland; and two brothers, Leonard Haynes of Oregon and Freeman Haynes of Arkansas.
Memorial services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Seventh-day Adventist Church, Williamsport. The Rev. Dan Goddard will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Camas, Wash.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.
Shirley U. Telford
Shirley Uranie Telford, 68, of 1241 Magnolia Court, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1929, in Guyana, South America, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Eglandine Christie.
She was employed at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.
She was a member of Christ Fellowship Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by her husband, Preston Compton Telford; three daughters, Marilyn Schneider of Hagerstown, Laurette Telford of the Bahamas, and Carol Phillips of Guyana; four sons, Preston Telford Jr. and Floyd Telford, both of Guyana, Lerone Telford and Compton Telford, both of Queens, N.Y.; three sisters; two brothers; and nine grandchildren, including Dexter Lynch, who resided with her.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Vergenoegen Cemetery
in Vergenoegen, Guyana.
James R. Robinson
HANCOCK, Md. - James Russell "King" Robinson, 91, formerly of Hancock, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 27, 1906, in Belle Grove, Md., he was the son of the late John W. and Minnie Truax Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace A. Snyder Robinson, in 1994.
He was employed by Fulton Orchards in Hancock and by B&O Railroad.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hancock.
He is survived by eight daughters, Mary E. Younker, Dolly M. Divelbliss and Kay A. Lynch, all of Hancock, Grace A. Budd of Gaithersburg, Md., Ruth D. Stanley of Spotsylvania, Va., June M. Winters and Sharon C. Robinson, both of Hagerstown, and Karne H. Derowin of Taftville, Conn.; one son, John R. Robinson of Laie, Hawaii; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Stahle; and one brother, Ira S. Robinson.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2 E. High St., Hancock. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

Virginia S. Sahnow
RANSON, W.Va. - Virginia Stewart Sahnow, 89, of Ranson, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.
Born Aug. 8, 1908, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Bushrod Napoleon and Agnes Emma Barr Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Sahnow.
She had been employed by the Arlington County, Va., school board.
She was a Baptist.
She is survived by one daughter, Anna Mae Hardy of Ranson; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Cecelia Ware, Della Walters, Hattie Magaha and Betsy Janes; and four brothers, Robert Stewart, Arthur Stewart, Oliver Stewart and Orville Stewart.
Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St., Ranson. Dr. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
John W. Ott II
A memorial graveside service for John W. Ott II, 57, of Odessa, Texas, who died June 14, 1997, will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery
in Hagerstown. The Rev. Bruce Dick will officiate.
Richard B. Wachs
Richard Barrick Wachs, 42, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, after suffering from brain cancer.
He was the son of Betty Barrick Wachs and the late Ernest V. Wachs.
He was a professional musician with an interest in electric and acoustical guitar. He performed widely in the Hagerstown area. He also performed in Nashville, and studied contemporary blues and rock and roll music.
He worked in computer sales for the Tandy Corp. in Baltimore.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, William Howard Wachs and Ernest V. Wachs Jr., both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Gretchen Wachs Rodriquez and Mary Wachs, both of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a niece and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Ryan Wachs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Everett A. Dingman
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Everett A. Dingman, 81, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.
Born Oct. 21, 1916, in Peru, Ind., he was the son of the late Charles A. and Mary Simpson Dingman.
His wife, Alice P. Haddaway Dingman, died in 1992.
He was a retired warehouseman for Hecht Co. in the Washington, D.C., area.
He is survived by one adopted daughter, Cindy Morris of Baltimore; one adopted son, Charles Dingman of Berkeley Springs; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Morgan County, W.Va. The Rev. William T. Ennis Sr. will officiate. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery by 1:15 p.m.

Dora E. Chrisman
Dora Elizabeth Chrisman, 80, of 10830 Roessner Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 10, 1917, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Bertha Pangle.
Her husband, Joseph Johnson Chrisman, died in 1994.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft; and owned and operated J&T Confectionary with her husband for many years.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
She volunteered at Western Maryland Center for the past 17 years. She was a charter member of Ladies of the Elks No. 378, and was a member of AARP.
She is survived by one son, Terry Chrisman Sr. of Williamsport; two sisters, Annabelle Bowman of Hagerstown and Mary Jane Appenzeller of Greencastle, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Katherine Rhodes, Margaret Sweeney and Charlotte Greene.
Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Milton D. Lemmond
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Milton Doughtie Lemmond, 77, of 7288 Talhelm Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services.
Born Feb. 23, 1920, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Carl Vance and Clara Bowles Lemmond.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina Gladden Lemmond.
He was a retired budget officer for the U.S. government.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He is survived by one daughter, Lana L. Fittry of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Margaret L. Schweitzer of Olinton, N.C., and Helen L. Ogburn of Roanoke, Va.; one brother, Earl V. Lemmond of Chesapeake, Va.; and one granddaughter.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Belle Haven Cemetery, Belle Haven, Va. The Rev. Jack D. Pruitt will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Ellen G. Hardsock
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ellen G. Hardsock, 89, of Shook Home, and formerly of 136 E. Queen St., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Shook Home.
Born March 30, 1908, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Mary Pouder Gray.
She had worked at Sherwin-Williams as an interior decorator and had a talk show on interior decorating on WCHA radio. She worked for more than 20 years as an interior decorator for P. Nicklas and Sons Furniture Store.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary 6319 VFW, Greencastle, Pa.
She is survived by her husband, Millard W. Hardsock, whom she married in 1946; two stepsons, Ronald Hardsock of Chambersburg and Richard Hardsock of Concord, Calif.; one sister, Frances Crane of Wendel, N.C.; two grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one daughter; one sister; and two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. George S. Mouer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.
Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
