Samuel L. Williamson

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Samuel L. "Sam" Williamson, 82, of 210 Joyce Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at his home.

Born Nov. 12, 1914, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel E. and Marie H. Bricker Williamson.

He was a retired mechanic from American Can, Chambersburg; he also worked as a carpenter for 35 years.

He was a member of First Church of God, Chambersburg, where he was a councilman of Ward 3.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Henry Williamson, whom he married Aug. 8, 1941; two daughters, Sandra L. Crawford of Sykesville, Md., and Kathy M. Rodgers of Waynesboro, Pa.; two sons, David E. Williamson of Marion, Pa., and the Rev. Thomas R. Williamson of Chambersburg; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Thomas R. Williamson and the Rev. K. Hull Byers will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Friday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Testiment Baptist Church, Building Fund, c/o Pastor Thomas R. Williamson, 360 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Doris J. Rhude

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Memorial services for Doris J. Rhude, who died on Oct. 2, 1997, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of United Towers, 200 N. Main St., Chambersburg.

The Rev. Howard L. Beavers will officiate.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Rhonda L. Reid

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Rhonda Leigh Reid, 31, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at her home.

Born June 3, 1966, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of Bruce M. and Phyllis M. Cogle Reid of Martinsburg.

She was a member of Martinsburg Christian Center.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Juanita Mancus Cogle of Martinsburg; one sister, Barbara Gail Reid, at home; and one uncle, Douglas Cogle.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Bruce Reid.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Rick Farley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Richard B. Wachs

Richard Barrick Wachs, 42, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, after suffering from brain cancer.

He was the son of Betty Barrick Wachs and the late Ernest V. Wachs.

He was a professional musician with an interest in electric and acoustical guitar.

He performed in the Hagerstown area. He also performed in Nashville, and studied contemporary blues and rock and roll music.

He worked in computer sales for the Tandy Corp. in Baltimore.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, William Howard Wachs and Ernest V. Wachs Jr., both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Gretchen Wachs Rodriquez and Mary Wachs, both of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Ryan Wachs.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

LaVerne Carpenter

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - LaVerne Carpenter, 66, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy Pat and Anna Perry Kelley.

She was employed as a salesperson at Stanley Home Products for 40 years; and as a cook at American Legion Post 60 for 20 years.

She is survived by three sons, Richard B. Carpenter Jr., James D. Carpenter Sr., and Edwin D. Carpenter, all of Berkeley Springs; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mereer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Jack and Shirley Hiles will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Vonda J. Collier

DAYTON, Ohio - Vonda J. Collier, 46, of Dayton, and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at Grand View Hospital, Dayton.

Born July 8, 1951, in Carlisle, Pa., she was the daughter of Helen G. Williamson Rebuck of Fayetteville, Pa., and the late Calvin H. Rebuck.

She was a 1970 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Falling Spring, Chambersburg.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Joy M. Cook of Ashcamp, N.Y., and Cynthia L. Bigler of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dannis J. Rebuck.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. William H. Harter will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Edward A. Walker

FORT LOUDON, Pa. - Edward A. Walker, 77, of 1588 Fort Loudon Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born July 18, 1920, in Milwaukee, he was the son of the late Edward M. and Minnie Easter Walker.

He retired in 1982 from Letterkenny Army Depot after 39 years. For the past 10 years, he owned and operated Walker's Kero-Sun Center of Fort Loudon.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received a Purple Heart.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Fort Loudon. He taught Sunday school, the Men's Bible Class and was a member of the choir. He was a former consistory member.

He was a member of Mount Parnell Lions Club, Fort Loudon Ruritan Club and Chambersburg Elks Club. He was former member and president of Fort Loudon Community Center.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Byers Walker, whom he married on Nov. 2, 1945; and one daughter, Nancy Walker of Hythe, England.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, Fort Loudon. The Rev. Barron P. Barley will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, with military graveside services by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa., Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church Sunday.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 13189 Main St., Fort Loudon, Pa. 17224; or Lutheran Social Services, Hospice, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Josephine L. Traver

CLEAR SPRING - Josephine Louise Traver, 83, of 11064 Dam 5 Road, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at her home.

Born June 12, 1914, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late George "Hooper" and Minnie Zimmerman Wolfe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin "Nip" Traver, in 1972.

She was a graduate of Towson Normal School, Towson, Md.

She was owner and operator of Wolfe's on the Square until her retirement in 1975. Prior to that she taught at Winter Street Elementary School, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by three daughters, Ginny Slick of Clear Spring, Sally Drury of Great Cacapon, W.Va., and Lolly Traver of Williamsport; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin and Marty Roberson, vicar, will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Food Bank, c/o Zion Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Harry K. Layman

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harry K. Layman, 72, of 12709 Old Forge Road, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at his home.

Born Jan. 16, 1925, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Herbert J. and Grace Toms Layman.

He was a 1943 graduate of Washington Township High School.

He was employed on his family's farm until 1955. From 1955 to 1957, he was employed at Wienbreners Motors, as a salesman. He was then employed by Earl Royer as a carpenter. Later, he worked at Quincy Orphanage, now Quincy United Methodist Home. Until his retirement in 1990, he was employed for 18 years by Keystone Homes. In his retirement, he worked part-time for J.R. Martin Benchoff and Reinhart Orchards.

He attended Germantown Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Royer Layman, whom he married on Nov. 19, 1955; two daughters, Kimberly Mills of Chambersburg, Pa., and Flora Kapuska of Eden Prairie, Minn.; one brother, C. David Layman of Waynesboro; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Germantown Bethel Church of God, Cascade, Md. The Rev. Paul Tobias will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining Bethel Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to Germantown Bethel Church of God, 16924 Raven Rock Road, Cascade, Md. 21719; or Blue Ridge Summit Ambulance Squad, 13063 Monterery Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. 17214.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

C. Paul Gladfelter

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - C. Paul Gladfelter, 51, of 649 N. Franklin St., Lot 110, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at his home.

Born Sept. 3, 1946, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Henry and Helen Killian Gladfelter and was a foster son of the late Blake and Edna Martin Sr.

He was employed by South Mountain Restoration Center for 24 years. Earlier, he was a painter with Glenn Merson. In his early life, he worked for Blake Martin Sr. of Martin Brothers Grocery Store.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 842, Chambersburg.

He is survived by three sons, Corey Lynn Gladfelter of Chambersburg, Christopher Paul Gladfelter and Edward Lee Gladfelter, both of McConnellsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Kauffman and Loretta Murdorff, both of Chambersburg; one foster sister, Nancy Martin of Chambersburg; two granddaughters; and his former wife, Myrna Long, of McConnellsburg.

He was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers, one foster brother and one nephew.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Joseph Carolin will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Monday.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Lutheran Home Care, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
