Betty E.C. Zittle

Betty Elizabeth Coss Zittle, 69, of 9816 Sharpsburg Pike, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 26, 1928, in Leitersburg, she was the daughter of the late Clarence S. and Nellie E. Mellott Coss.

She was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage, she was employed with Central Chemical, Pangborn Corp. and Civil Service.

She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.

She also was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown and AARP.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Donald H. Zittle; two daughters, Donna J. Fogle of Hagerstown, and Susan E. Makin of Boonsboro; one sister, Marie C. Wilber of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and two nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Dean M. Miller and the Rev. Rachel Black will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles M. Keller

Charles Melvin Keller, 72, of 13839 Sunrise Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 18, 1925, in Middletown, Md., he was the son of the late Charles M. and Mary Palmer Keller.

He retired from Danzer Metal Works after 27 years.

He served with the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Myersville.

He also was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Doris E. Morgan Keller; one daughter, Vicki K. Smith of Hagerstown; one son, Charles Melvin Smith II of Hagerstown; six sisters, D. Pauline Rutt of Ormond Beach, Fla., Helen S. Walker of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., Betty J. Fisher of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Joyce Pepples of Hagerstown, Glendoris E. Dantoni of Towson, Md., and Mary Alice Keller of Middletown, Md.; five brothers, Elvin M. Keller of Spring Hill, Fla., Claude E. Keller of Myersville, Md., Robert E. Keller, John W. Keller and David A. Keller, all of Middletown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Norman Kemmerer will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Zion United Methodist Church building fund, Myersville, Md. 21773.

Samuel R. Ford

Samuel Ralph Ford, 106, of 1103 Fry Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Avalon Manor in Hagerstown.

Born in Middleburg "State Line," Pa., July 14, 1891, he was the son of the late Harvey Elmore and Amelia Jane Gerhardt Ford.

He was a graduate of the area school system and Scranton School of Business.

His wife, Sara Zeluska Zemora Palmer Ford, died in 1973. They were married Feb. 16, 1914.

He was employed by Wells Fargo, which was later known as American Express Co., and then called Railway Express Co. He retired in 1958, holding the position of manager and cashier.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, having served as vestryman and junior warden. He was a former member and vestryman of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town, W.Va.

He also was a member of Tall Cedars of Hagerstown, past master of Malta Lodge 80 of Charles Town, past high priest of Jefferson Chapter 5 of Royal Arch Masons and past member of Grand Lodge of West Virginia. He was the last charter member of Eastern Star Chapter 128 of Charles Town.

He is survived by two daughters, Jane Elizabeth Diffenderfer of Hagerstown, and Mary Lorraine Boehmer of Wichita, Kan.; four sons, Webster Warren Ford of Palm Bay, Fla., Edward Palmer Ford and Charles Frederick Ford, both of Hagerstown, and John Clay Ford of Martinsburg; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Elmore Dolan Ford, and Ralph Gerhardt Ford; his twin brother, Cyrus Ray Ford; and one granddaughter.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor I. Zuck will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro.

Frank L. Mills Sr.

VANVILLE, W.Va. - Frank Lee Mills Sr., 70, of Vanville, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Va.

Born Nov. 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Harry Edwin and Ethel Buchanon Mills.

He served in the U.S. Navy, for six years, during World War II and the Korean War.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Newton D. Baker, Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion. He also was a member of Martinsburg Lodge 120, Loyal Order of Moose and achieved the honor of "Pilgrim." He also was employed there since 1955.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mae Shifflett Mills; six sons, Frank L. Mills Jr., Harry A. Mills Sr., James W. Mills, Craig L. Mills Sr., Kirk D. Mills Sr. and Donald W. Albright, all of Vanville; one brother, Lewis R. Mills of Glengary, W.Va.; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert A. Mills and Jack E. Mills.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with Martinsburg Lodge 120, Loyal Order of Moose holding a service at 7:30 p.m.

Mary R. Bradley

MONTEREY, Calif. - Mary Rita Bradley, 82, of Monterey, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at her home.

Born Nov. 13, 1914, in Flushing, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Maria Conway Bradley of Ireland and New York City.

She worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance for 42 years.

She was a supporter of foreign missions. She made donations to those organizations throughout her lifetime. Her friends knew her as "the Lion of 14th Street" for her loyalty and commitment in helping the defenseless.

She is survived by a niece, Elizabeth A. Atkinson of Monterey, Calif.; three nephews, John B. Atkinson, Robert E. Atkinson, and Thomas J. Atkinson, all of Alaska; and four grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Bradley of New York City and Helen Atkinson of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and her nephew and godchild, Peter William Atkinson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Martinsburg. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will be celebrant. Entombment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, before the service, from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to any religious order.

John Handzo

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - John Handzo, 92, of Shepherdstown, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 16, 1905, in Ashley, Pa., he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Patsko Handzo, of Wilkes Barre, Pa.

After 35 years as proprietor of Southern 5&10 Variety Store in Shepherdstown, he retired in 1970. Prior to that he managed Woolworth stores in Pennsylvania and Martinsburg.

He was a member of Christ Reformed Church UCC, in Shepherdstown, for 60 years.

He was a founding member of both Shepherdstown Mens Club and Shepherdstown Kiwanis Club. He volunteered at the Newton D. Baker Veterans Administration Center. He was a member of Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department. He was an active member of Martinsburg Kiwanis Club for more than 58 years, where he served as past president and district governor and received the life member award in 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Julia "Judy" Myers Handzo, to whom he was married for 61 years; two sons, John W. Handzo of West Fenwick Island, Del., and C. Stephen Handzo of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Christ Reformed Church UCC, East German St., Shepherdstown. The Rev. Bronson Staley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box F, Shepherdstown, W.Va. 25443.

Charles J. V. Thomas

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charles J. V. Thomas, 82, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 31, 1915, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Charles J. V. and Marguerite Wire Thomas.

He was formerly employed by Charles Town Races as a security guard and prior to that at Victor Products.

He was of the Episcopal faith.

He was a member of Charles Town Lodge 948, Loyal Order of Moose and Jackson-Perks Post 71 American Legion of Charles Town.

He is survived by his wife, Vallie Pauline "Polly" Thomas; one daughter, Agnes Jones of Bakerton, W.Va.; four stepsons, Richard Welch of Ladiesburg, Md., Gordon Welch of Minot, N.D., Larry Welch of Clarksburg, Md., and Jerry Welch of Clarksville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Thomas, Neal Thomas, and Burton Thomas.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St., Ranson, W.Va. Dr. Wyman E. Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Myrtle C. Jenkins

ORANGE, N.J. - Myrtle Catherine Jenkins, 92, of Orange, formerly of Johnsontown, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Orange Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 7, 1905, in Johnsontown, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Jerry M. and Mary V. Johnson. She was one of 13 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Jenkins.

She received her elementary education in Johnsontown; and attended Storer College, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, N.J., for many years where she was a member of Gospel Choir; Senior Chorus; and Silver Leaf Club.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Carrie C. Johnson; stepchildren, four nieces and eight nephews.

Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Johnsontown Cemetery, Johnsontown. The Rev. Jerry Johnson will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town, W.Va.
