Winifred L. Springer

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Winifred Leo Springer, 81, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Born Oct. 3, 1916, in Bakerton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Emery Washington and Laura Dopson Springer.

He was retired from Fairchild Aircraft.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Bakerton Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Manuel Springer; two sons, Jerry L. Springer of Hagerstown and Joseph W. Springer of Martinsburg; one sister, Elizabeth Stride of Charles Town, W.Va; two brothers, James Springer of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Robert Springer of Keedysville; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Penwell and Edith Shackelford; and three brothers, Stanley Springer, Jacob Springer and Harold Springer.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Oscar Motilal will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1610 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Anna C. Covellis

BALTIMORE, Md. - Anna Catherine Covellis, 83, a resident of Colton Villa Nursing Center and formerly of 5220 York Road, Baltimore, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 30, 1914, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Eavey and Emma Margaret Seibert Bowman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter George Covellis, in 1982.

She is survived by one sister, Jeanette F. Cattrill of Hagerstown; one brother, John Bowman of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanora McCubbin and Mary G. Mentzer; and one brother, Robert S. Bowman.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to Colton Villa Nursing Center, 750 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Jeremy B. Sumpter

Jeremy Bradburn Sumpter, 22, of 10435 Sharpsburg Pike, Hagerstown, who died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, also is survived by a half sister, ShiloRae W. Fletcher of Hagerstown.

A professional wrestler, he wrestled under the name "Big E Sleeze."

Ruth S. Dye

SMITHSBURG - Ruth Sylvia Owens Dye, 80, of 12049 Little Antietam Road, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 7, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Owens.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Queen Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred Dye; two sons, William V. Stenger of Frederick, Md., and Walter V. Stenger of Hagerstown; and one sister, Anita Schlotterbeck of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton and the Rev. Darryl C. Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Ruth E. Grayson

Ruth Elizabeth Grayson, 77, of 17541 W. Washington St., died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 26, 1919, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Grace Jackson Ridenour.

She formerly was employed by the Board of Education, and Riffle Dry Cleaners.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Bud W. Grayson; two sisters, Ethel Barr of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Evelyn Bushey of Cavetown; one brother, Charles W. Ridenour of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Mary Kennedy Ridenour; and two sisters, Mildred Snodderly and Ruby Garver.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Eddie Blackman and the Rev. Wendell Gross will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 15 High St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Myrtle R. Vickers

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Myrtle R. Vickers, 99, of Morrison Cove Home, formerly of 1014 2nd St., Juniata, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, at Morrison Cove Home.

Born Sept. 24, 1898, in Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Delemer Oakman and Delania Melotte.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Daniel M. Vickers, in 1985. They were married on Nov. 30, 1958.

She had worked as a seamstress.

She was a member of Juniata Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Dolores Riggleman of Martinsburg and Evelyn Cupp of Morrison, Colo.; one stepson, Daniel Neal of Juniata; one sister Bernice McCray of Worforsburg; one foster brother, William Burket of Worforsburg; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters; and four brothers.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mauk and Yates Funeral Home, 719 Fourth Ave., Juniata, Altoona, Pa. The Rev. Robert Wharton will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Vincent U. Hill

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Vincent U. "Vince" Hill, 43, of 13081 Welty Road, Apt. 19, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at his home.

Born Dec. 30, 1953, in Dover, N.C., he was the son of Iris Bryant of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the late Floyd Hill Jr.

He was a 1972 graduate of Alexander Hamilton High School, Brooklyn.

He was a student at Hagerstown Junior College.

He served in the U.S. Army. Enlisting in 1973, he had served at Fort Jackson, S.C.; Japan; Danville, Ark.; Fort Dix, N.J.; Frankfurt, Germany; Sinop, Turkey; and Fort Huachua, Ariz. He retired from the military on May 1, 1996, while stationed at Fort Ritchie.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Anita Adams Hill, whom he married on March 23, 1985; one daughter, Latissua C. Davis of Garner, N.C.; two sisters, Iris Renee Hill and Barbara Hill, both of Brooklyn; one brother, Willie Hill of Brooklyn; and two stepbrothers, Ernest Bryant of Dover, N.C., and Lynwood Dunn of Kingston, N.C.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Elvin D. Hill Sr., in 1994.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Liberty Grace Church of God, 3400 Copley Road, Baltimore. Pastor Eunice King will officiate.

Burial will be Monday in Howell Cemetery , Danville, Ark.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa.

The family requests that all floral donations be sent to Cornwell Funeral Home, 756 Main St., Danville, Ark. 72833.

Drusilla C. Thompson

Drusilla C. Thompson, 47, of South Locust Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 12, 1950, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Horace W. and H. June Allenberg Fuller.

She was employed with Frederick Cancer Research Facility for 16 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Hagerstown.

She is survived by her husband, Ronnie E. Thompson; one son, Joshua D. Claar of Baltimore; one sister, Rebecca S. Fuller of Smithsburg; and one grandson, Cody L. Claar.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David W. Fuller.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services, P.O. Box 411, Smithsburg, Md. 21783.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Anna C. Covellis

BALTIMORE, Md. - Anna Catherine Covellis, 83, formerly of 5220 York Road, and most recently a resident of Colton Villa Nursing Center, who died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, is survived by her sister, Jeanette F. Cottrill of Hagerstown. She also was preceded in death by sisters, Edna M. Mullen, Nellie L. McLaughlin and H. Fern Rase; and a brother, Max Bowman.

Edward L. Viar

WILLIAMSPORT - Edward Leon Viar, 75, of Williamsport, who died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, is survived by his wife, Flo Mummert Viar.

Christopher L. Martin

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Christopher Luke Martin, infant son of Luke C. and Chrystal L. Brooks Martin of 4330 Dixie Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, at University Hospital/Hershey Medical Center in Derry Township, Pa.

He was born Oct. 28, 1997, in Hershey, Pa.

He was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, Chambersburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Linda Brooks of Chambersburg; paternal grandparents, Virginia Martin of Chambersburg, and Donald Martin of Tampa, Fla.; and maternal great-grandmother, Winifred Peters of Chambersburg.

Private graveside services will be held at St. Thomas Cemetery in St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Patrick B. Jones will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to King Street United Brethren Church, Childrens Ministries, 172 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
