Raymond L. Sprankle

Raymond Leroy Sprankle, 85, of 217 Nottingham Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 30, 1912 in Broadfording, Md., he was the son of the late Clyde Herman and Lillian Gertrude Bartles Sprankle.

He retired from Hardell Fuel Oil; earlier he had worked at Fairchild Industries.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Mae Follin Sprankle; two daughters, Connie M. Thomas of Boonsboro and Donna L. Baer of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one sister, Helen Clingan of Williamsport; one brother, Clyde Sprankle of Boonsboro; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Sprankle.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Arnold F. Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Fellowship Assembly of God, 17640 York Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Janet L. Gaver

BEL ALTON, Md. - Janet Louise Gaver, 74, of Bel Alton, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Physicians Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 22, 1923, in Funkstown, she was the daughter of the late Randall and Florence Pearl Stockslager Herman.

Her husband, Bernard Roelkey Gaver, preceded her in death.

She retired from Brystol Myers in Hillside, N.J.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Teresa Stuppiello of Bel Alton, and Ann Mazzaro of Hackettstown, N.J.; one son, Bernard Roelkey Gaver Jr. of Atascadero, Calif.; one sister, Thelda Shea of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Rogers.

Services were held Friday, Oct. 31, at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home Inc. in La Plata, Md. The Rev. William Miller officiated. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, or to American Cancer Society Western Charles Unit.

Linda D. Hunter

EL PASO, Texas - Linda Diane Stottlemyer Hunter, 32, of El Paso, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at her home.

Born Aug. 22, 1965, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lorraine A. Horner of Chambersburg, Pa., and the late Robert A. Stottlemyer Sr. of Hagerstown.

She was a 1983 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School.

She worked as a waitress at Copper Kettle Restaurant in Chambersburg.

She served in the U.S. Army, specializing in medical technology.

While living in the Hagerstown area, she was involved in Company II Theatre Workshop; and Theatre Project Company.

She is survived by her husband, Dehric B. Hunter; her stepmother, Margaret E. Stottlemyer of Hagerstown; her stepfather, Charles R. Horner Jr. of Chambersburg; one sister, Lorre A. Stottlemyer of Frederick, Md.; one brother, Robert A. Stottlemyer Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; two stepsisters, Margaret K. Jackson and Tinalynn G. Kline, both of Hagerstown; seven stepbrothers, Michael A. Kochera of Hancock, Robert J. Kochera, Andrew S. Kochera, Guy D. Seiler, and Kelley E. Seiler, all of Hagerstown, Kim A. Horner of Boonsboro, and Kirk D. Horner of Church Hill, Tenn.; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Blvd., El Paso.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 Carolina Drive, El Paso.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at Copper Kettle Restaurant, Chambersburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1610 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Helen V. Deatrich

Helen V. Deatrich, 73, of Mayfair Avenue, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 17, 1924, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Alice Hartle Detrow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell J. Deatrich, in 1995.

She was employed by Ross Garment for 25 years; and was a homemaker.

She was a life member of Ladies Auxiliary of North American Rod and Gun Club.

She is survived by three daughters, Rayetta J. Bond and Judy A. Yellott, both of Hagerstown, and Nancy L. Deatrich Lapole of Williamsport; one sister, Kathleen Beall of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertie Martz; and a brother, Arthur Hartle.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. Pastor David Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edward E. Elliott

Edward Ernest Elliott, 81, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center.

Born May 27, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Guy M. and Eva M. Stouffer Elliott.

He was employed by Pangborn Corporation for 47 years, retiring in 1980.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by three sisters, Flora Anderson of Fayetteville, N.C., Evelyn E. Ruth of Hagerstown and Betty Hussong of Littleton, Colo.; one brother, Donald Elliott of Winter Haven, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Edna M. Grossnickle

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Edna M. Grossnickle, 80, of 3218 Brethren Church Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, Boonsboro.

Born May 31, 1917, in Garfield, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Della Pomery Harne.

She retired in 1987 from Dan Dee Restaurant in Frederick, Md., after 22 years.

She was a member of Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, Myersville, Md.

She enjoyed flowers, crafts, quilting, making braided rugs, latch hook rugs, sewing and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde L. Grossnickle; one son, Wayne Wade Grossnickle of Myersville; two sisters, Ethel Pryor of Boonsboro, and Catherine Baker of Lovettsville, Va.; one brother, Francis Harne of Middletown, Md.; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville. The Rev. David Eberly and the Rev. Rachel Black will officiate. Burial will be in Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Myersville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Donations may be made in memory of Brandy Dawn Grossnickle to The Heifer Project International, c/o Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, 20402 Beaver Creek Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Nina D. James

CONCORD, Mass. - Nina Dawson James, 96, of Concord, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997.

Born Aug. 9, 1901, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Bert E. and Icy Roseltha Hovermale Dawson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee James.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by one son, Donald D. James of Concord; one sister, Pauline Dawson Mechem of Washington, D.C.; one niece; and two nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The Rev. Mary Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in Union Chapel United Methodist Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs.

Catherine M. Banzhoff

FUNKSTOWN - Catherine Mae Kay Banzhoff, 71, of 101 S. Westside Ave., died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Amanda Yost.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Banzhoff, in 1986.

She was employed with Home Mutual Life Insurance Co.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a life member of American Legion, Dixon Troxell Unit 211, Funkstown Auxiliary; past president, for three terms, of American Legion, Western Maryland District; served as chairman of Bingo Committee for five years; secretary and chairman of Day for God and Country; held several appointments in Maryland for the American Legion; district representative for Children and Youth, Americanism, Community Service, and Membership; Maryland Department vice chairman of National Security, and district reception chairman; and a volunteer for American Red Cross.

She is survived by three daughters, Rose M. Johnston and Sharon L. Hardey, both of Hagerstown, and Carol Baker of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; one son, Michael B. Kolich of Hagerstown; two sisters, Marjie Huber and Dorothy Peterson, both of Johnstown; two brothers, Jim Yost of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Sonny Yost of Johnstown; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Carl Kolich.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
