Carl E. Kauffman

MODESTO, Calif. - Carl Eugene Kauffman, 50, of Modesto, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Modesto.

Born in Leitersburg, he was the son of Jane Mullenix of Leitersburg and the late Charles E. Kauffman. He was the stepson of Nervin Mullenix of Leitersburg.

He was a mason by trade and a caretaker of a private hunting club.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served three tours of duty during the Vietnam War.

In addition to his mother and stepfather, he is survived by his wife, Kim Kauffman; one son, Charles E. Kauffman of Modesto; one sister, Carolyn E. Mongan of Leitersburg; one stepsister, Anna Mae McCarney of Rouzerville, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. "Umpie" Kauffman.

Burial will be in Modesto.

Maurice R. Gay

SHARPSBURG - Maurice R. "Duke" Gay, 72, of 3413 Harpers Ferry Road, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 6, 1925, in Antietam, Md., he was the son of the late William and Fannie May Ebersole Gay.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Amelia Jamison Gay, in 1985.

He retired, in 1986, from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, after 31 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a former member of Dixon-Troxell Post 211 American Legion, Funkstown.

He is survived by one son, Craig W. Gay, with whom he resided; three sisters, Betty J. Crampton of Hagerstown, Ruth "Tiny" Cavander and Bonnie Eichelberger, both of Dargan; three brothers, Gary Zimmerman of Boonsboro, Harold "Buck" Gay of Dargan and Donnie "Pete" Zimmerman of Hedgesville, W.Va.; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Armatha Jones; and two brothers, John T. "Jack" Zimmerman and William "Scat" Gay.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Samples Manor Church of God, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Ernest Witmer will officiate. Burial will be in Samples Manor Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

Nell D. Ryder

Nell Downey Ryder, 87, of 1000 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 15, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lewis W. and Maude I. Downey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don F. Ryder, in 1990.

She was a retired teacher who taught in the Washington County schools.

She was a 1927 graduate of Hagerstown High School and a 1929 graduate of Towson State Teachers College, Towson, Md.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hagerstown.

She is survived by one son, Don F. Ryder Jr. of Bethesda, Md.; one sister, Marie Steele of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

William H. Harrington

BRUNSWICK, Md. - William "Bill" Hogan Harrington, 74, of 303 Delaware Ave., died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at St. Catherine's Nursing Home, Emmitsburg, Md.

Born March 14, 1923, in Brunswick, he was the son of the late William Eugene and Audrey Hogan Harrington.

He was a 1940 graduate of Brunswick High School; and a 1944 graduate of Western Maryland College, Westminster, Md. He attended Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and Mount St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md.

He retired as a teacher and librarian from Brunswick High School.

He was a member and organist of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick; and organist of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Petersville, Md.

He is survived by one brother, Blair G. Harrington of Knoxville, Md.; one niece; one nephew; one great-niece; and two great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick. The Rev. Lawrence J. Gesy will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, Petersville.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick.

A Christian wake service will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

For the convenience of friends, visitation also will be Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 113 First Ave., Brunswick, Md. 21716.

Edna M. Wood

KNOXVILLE, Md. - Edna Marion Wood, 74, of 605 Tritapoe Drive, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born July 24, 1923, in Brunswick, Md., she was the daughter of the late James Ezra Albert and Gertrude Weddle Albert Brown.

She was a member of New York Hill United Methodist Church, Brunswick.

She was a member of United Transportation Union.

She is survived by her husband, of 54 years, James W. Wood; one son, Gene Raymond Wood at home; two sisters, Ruth Cooper of Knoxville and Louise Powers Bell of Hagerstown; one brother, Edward L. Albert of Brunswick; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William Ray Albert.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The Rev. Robert A. McCullough will officiate. Burial will be in Park Heights Cemetery, Brunswick.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, visitation also will be Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Svend D. Sheppard

WESTERNPORT, Md. - Svend David "Shep" Sheppard, 76, of 26009 Rock St., and formerly of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.

Born April 17, 1921, in Faxe, Denmark, he was the son of the late Charles L. and Louise Emilie Elisabeth Olsen Sheppard.

He retired from Western Maryland Railway in 1979 as a yardmaster with 39 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific. He received the Bronze Star.

He was a member of Hagerstown 217 AF&AM Lodge; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite 320; York Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine Hagerstown Club; Sayara Unit; Hill Billy Clan 42; Loyal Order of Moose; life member of VFW Post 1936; member of American Legion Post 222, Clear Spring; AMVETS 17, Thurmont, Md.; Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; Izaak Walton Club; Williamsport Redmen Club; Western Maryland Old Timers Club; Railroad Retirees Association of Cumberland, Md.; Greencastle Sportsman Club; life member of South Mountain Sportsmans Club; member of At Last Hunt Club; Alsatia Club Inc.; AARP; UTU 50-year membership plus; and a former member of Civil Air Patrol.

He is survived by a close friend, Dora Kyle Wilson; two daughters, Diana C. Fritz of Anaheim, Calif., and Peggy M. Schildt of Walkersville, Md.; two sons, Bradford L. Sheppard of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Jan S. Sheppard of Williamsport; two sisters, Ida Inger Tewalt of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Karn Angle of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Svend D. Sheppard II; one sister, Betty Young; one brother, Carl R. Sheppard; and two grandsons.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Westernport. The Rev. Matthew Riegel will officiate. At his request, he will then be cremated.

Friends will be received at Boal Funeral Home, 111 Church St., Westernport, today from 6 to 9 p.m., where Hagerstown 217 A.F.&A.M. will have a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, Westernport, Md. 21562; or Hagerstown Lodge 217 Building Fund, c/o Joseph Stouffer, P.O. Box 166, Hagerstown, Md. 21741-0166.

Margaret J.R. Schildt

THURMONT, Md. - Margaret Jean Rogers Schildt, 56, of 7212 Blue Mountain Road, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born July 8, 1941, in Thurmont, she was the daughter of the late James Harry Rogers Sr. and Carrie Francis Myers Rogers.

She was a member of Weller United Methodist Church, Thurmont.

She was a member of AMVETS Post 7 Ladies Auxiliary, Thurmont; Edwin C. Creeger Jr. Post 168 American Legion Auxiliary, Thurmont; and Blue Ridge Sportmans Association.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Leon Schildt Sr., whom she married on Aug. 29, 1959; one daughter, Tammy L. Galderise of Atlanta; two sons, Edward L. Schildt Jr. and Blaine W. Schildt Sr., both of Thurmont; one sister, Barbara L. Stouffer of Taneytown, Md.; one brother, James H. Rodgers Jr. of Frederick, Md.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer F. Rodgers and Clarence Rogers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. The Rev. Richard A. Zamostny will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to Maryland Kidney Foundation.

Charlotte L.D. Stone

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Charlotte L. Dietrich Stone, 87, of 820 Bishop Walsh Road, and formerly of Hagerstown and Rancho Bernado, San Diego, Calif., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, Cumberland.

Born April 7, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Elmer George and Hannah Belle Brandenburg Dietrich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Vernon Stone Jr., in 1984.

She was a graduate of Hood College in Frederick, Md., and the University of Wisconsin with a master of library science.

She held library positions at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., and Washington, D.C. She ended her career as head of Children's Services at Washington County Free Library and branches in 1972.

She was a life member of Christ Reformed Church in Hagerstown, where she was superintendent of the children's department and president of board of education of the Sunday school.

She was president of the Hagerstown Hood Club; charter member of Hagerstown AAUW; and member of WGA of Fountain Head Country Club.

She was a volunteer in the gift shop of Washington County Hospital.

She and her husband retired to Rancho Bernado-San Diego in 1973. While there, she was a member of R.B. Community Presbyterian Church, where she was a circle leader and committee member. She also was a member of WGA of Oaks North Golf Club and volunteered at the gift shop of Pomerado Hospital, Poway, Calif.

She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Stone Hess of Cumberland; two grandsons, Capt. P. David Hess of Fort Eustis, Va., and Jonathan Dietrich Hess of Marietta, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cumberland. The Rev. John J. Duffus will officiate.

Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Christ Reformed Church, 103 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
