March 7, 2000

Mr. Earl F. Carrick of Queenstown, Md. died of a heart attack Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in Memorial Hospital of Easton. He was 70.

Mr. Carrick was born in Anne Arundel County, the son of the late Walter B. and Blanche Coale Carrick. He owned Carrick & Gabbe Lumber Co. in Mitchellville and Hardwood Mills, Inc., Millington.

Mr. Carrick spent his life working hard and enjoying his family. He was an avid card player and enjoyed his weekly card games.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joan Carrick, in 1996; 4- brothers, Oden, Claude, Tony and Raymond; and a sister , Lucy. He also was preceded in death by a brother and sister, who died in infancy.

He is survived by 4 sons, Wayne Carrick of Chestertown, Md., Carl Carrick of Grasonville, Md., Steven and Tim Carrick both of Queenstown; three sisters, Edith Stockett of Davidson, Cora Hunt of Mitchellville and Jennie Spicknall of Riva; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 11 am. Friday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 408 S. Liberty St. Centreville, where friends may call 3-5 and 7-9pm today.

Burial will be in Crumpton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to ; Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, P.O. Box 742 Owings Mills , Md. 21117 , or Spina Bifida Association of the eastern Shore, 313 Aurora St. Easton , Md. 21601.

Herbert T. Brown, Jr., son of the late Herbert T. & Florence Witmyer Brown, died of complications from Diabetes at The Pines Nursing Home in Easton, Maryland, on March 7, 2000 at the age of 76.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Brown (nee Mann); a son, Glenn Ropka; a daughter; Sharon Maben; a brother, Daniel W. Brown Sr. of Williamsburg Virginia; a Brother-in-law, Robert Lee Mann of St. Michaels, Maryland; a Sister-in-law, Janet Mann Thomas of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Granddaughters, Jessica and Betty Jane and 8 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown attended the University of Virginia and graduated from the University of Baltimore Law School. Mr. Brown had a 42-year career with C&P Telephone Company. Upon returning from the Navy after WWII, he represented C&P in the company’s rates and tariffs legal department. Mr. Brown continued to practice law on the Eastern Shore after his retirement from C&P.

During World War II, Mr. Brown was a naval aviator with the South Atlantic Fleet Air Wing and held the rank of Lieutenant J.G. Mr. Brown was a member of the American, Maryland and Queen Anne County Bar Associations. He served on the Queen Anne County Ethics Commission, and was also a longstanding member of the Kiwanis Club of Pikesville, Maryland. He was a Mason; member of The Sons of the American Revolution; Society of the War of 1812; Grasonville VFW, and many other organizations.

Mr. Brown was an avid golfer, member of the Country Clubs of Maryland and Prospect Bay, where he served as a board member until September of 1999.

Memorial services will be held at the Wye Parish Church in Wye Mills Maryland on March 10, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery on March 20, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A.

Arthur “Otts” Guertler of Glen Arm, MD. Formerly of Stevensville, MD. died Tuesday March 7, 2000 at the Glen Arm Retirement Community in Glen Arm, MD. He was

Born on October 3, 1906 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Charles and Lilly Mae Buschman Guertler. He was a graduate of Poly Tech High School in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Guertler owned and operated his families Retail Meat business in Belair Market for 50 years and also a member of various dance bands in the Baltimore area. Upon retiring he moved permanently to Stevensville, MD. He was the past president of the Cloverfields Property Owners Association and an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jean Warman Guertler of Glen Arm, MD. four daughters Maxine Guertler of Stevensville, MD.; Susan Jean Gonzalez, Karen Louise Guertler and Martha MacNeil Guertler all of Baltimore, MD. six (6) grandsons and (14) great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 11 am March 16, 2000 at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD.

Kathryn F. "Kitty" Barwick of Easton, died at the University Hospital, Baltimore on Tuesday, March 7, 2000. She was 80.

Born in Oxford on July 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Margaret Elizabeth Schutz Fluharty. After attending public school she, in January 1941 married J. Kenneth Barwick. They made their home in Talbot County where she worked as a clerk in the family store until 1964 when she was employed by what is now Genesis ElderCare-The Pines Nursing Home, Easton. She worked as a nurses aide and later as a supply clerk before retiring in the early 1990's. She then did some private patient sitting.

A member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton she was baptized by immersion at the Countryside Christian Church, Cambridge in 1999.

Surviving, in addition, to her husband are two sons, J. Kenneth Barwick, Jr. of Cambridge and Thomas A. Barwick of Easton; a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Mueller of Easton; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A son, John Charles Barwick, died in 1967.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton on Friday, March 10, at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will be private.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday evening, March 9, 2000 from 7 - 9 PM and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, MD 21601.

Hazel Lipp Cannon of Queenstown, MD. died March 7, 2000 at Mink Hill Assisted Living in Grasonville, MD. She was 99.

Born in Baltimore, MD on November 21, 1900 she was the daughter of the late Charles Albert Lippand Gay Coppage Lipp Flowerfield.As a small child she moved to the Eastern Shore. She was a graduate of Sudlersville High School class of 1919 and after completing her education at the Towson State Normal School, she began her teaching career in Felton, Delaware. She later taught in Queen Anne’s County at the Crane Swamp School. In 1944 she moved her family to the Wilmington, De area, and in her later years she joined the Foster Grandparent Program in Newark, Delaware, and taught slow learners for 20 years. Mrs. Cannon received many honors during that time with certificates of excellence, given by the school district.

She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Roselle, DE. She was noted for the beautiful crocheted hand work that she did, making many afghans crewel work pictures and other gifts for the family.

She is survived by two daughters Edna Coleman Burris and her husband Franklin with whom she lived with in Queenstown, MD. & Gay Cannon Vreken and her husband Peter of Newark , DE a son Harry N. Coleman and his wife Cheryl of Newark, DE and a sister Edna Lipp Coffin of Gaithersburg, MD. and son-in –law Frank Baldo, Sr. (10) grandchilden, 16 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchilden. Her first husband Harry C. Coleman and her second husband Ezekiel C. Cannon, daughter Mary Louise Coleman Baldo and brother C. Noble Lipp all predeceased her.

Funeral Services will be held 11Am Friday March 10, 2000 at the Price United Methodist Church in Price, MD. Where family friends may call one hour before. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Church Hill, MD. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Christ United Methodist Church 6 North Clifton Ave, Roselle, Wilimington, DE. 19805 or to the Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave Queenstown, MD. 21658.

Anne Swain Levis, 74, a woman of passion and vision, died suddenly in Chestertown, Md. Monday morning March 6th of complications from a rare liver disorder. Anne, only recently a resident of Chestertown, Md. along with her beloved husband Jack, was born Anne Virginia Swain and raised in Georgetown, De. She was the only child of Ralph and Elisabeth Swain of Georgetown. In high school she earned recognition for both her athletic and academic achievements. She attended the University of Delaware where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1946. It was at college during her senior year that she met dashing Army Air Corps. Lt. Jack Levis, who had just returned from WWII and was entering the University as a freshman. Their marriage and romance has lasted a lifetime.

Anne received much recognition and many accolades during her life, culminating perhaps in her receipt in 1984 of the Outstanding Female Alumni Award from the University of Delaware. However, she always felt that her greatest accomplishments have been as a loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, C. Jackson Levis, Sr., and their four married sons: Charles J. Levis, Jr. (Carol) of Flemington, NJ., Scotton S. Levis (Bev) of Hatboro, Pa., Lee C. Levis (Mary) of Salisbury, Md., and Linden C. Levis (Ann) of Virginia Beach, Va. Her only daughter Kathryn Elisabeth Levis died in 1979 from cystic fibrosis. In addition Anne is survived by 13 grandchildren with a first great grandchild due in May.

A private graveside service will be held at Sharp’s Cemetery in Fair Hill, Md. at 10:30 a.m. Thursday March 9th to be followed by an open memorial service at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 2:00 p.m. that same day.

John Albert Altvater of Lloyds Landing Road, Trappe, died at the Genesis ElderCare- The Pines, Easton on Monday, March 6, 2000. He was 61.

Born in Cambridge on March 30, 1938, he was the son of the late John V. and Nellie E. Pahlman Altvater. After graduating from Easton High School in 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his release from active duty in 1959 he started farming with his father in the Trappe district and, at the time of his death, was farming with his son. He was very proud that all of his children were involved in agriculture.

A lifelong resident of the Trappe area he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Easton, the Talbot County Farm Bureau, The Talbot County Corn Club. He was also active in the work at the Talbot AG Center where he served as Treasurer of the County Fair for over 15 years.

Mr. Altvater is survived by his wife, the former M. Elaine Campbell whom he married in 1962; two daughters, Susan E. McCulley of Trappe and Anne M. Altvater of Preston; a son, David A. Altvater of Trappe; two sisters, Peggy A. Patterson of Parkton, MD and Della M. Andrew of Easton and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Landing Neck Cemetery, Trappe on Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at 11:00 AM.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Agriculture Center, P.O. Box 812, Easton, MD 21601 or the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist ST., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Major General Paul Robert Tyler of Alexandria, VA died at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines in Easton on Monday, March 6, 2000.He was 86.

Born in Rochester, NY on August 13, 1913, he was the son of the late Van Elroy and Ida Marie Smith Tyler. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1936, he was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in WWII and the Korean War. He also graduated from Industrial War College in 1953, and received the Distinguished Service Medal. In 1965, he made his home in Alexandria when he was assigned as the Quartermaster General during the Vietnam War. In 1969, he retired as a Major General with 33 years of active duty. He remained in the Northern Virginia area and continued to work as a consultant in the private sector, which included helping the Iranian military computerize its supply system, until his retirement in 1978.

Major General Tyler was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. He was also a lifetime member of the Retired Officers Association, the Navy Institute, and the Marine Corps Association.

Major General Tyler is survived by his wife, the former R. Rita Carroll of Alexandria, whom he married in 1939; three daughters, Marie R. U’Ren of Easton, MD, Commander Paula J. Tyler USN/Ret. of Deland, FL, and Carol R. Day of Potomac, MD; a son, Paul R. Tyler, Jr. of Richmond, VA; a brother, James E. Tyler of Sarasota, FL; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Old Post Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, March 27, 2000 at 10:45 AM. Anyone wishing to attend should be at the chapel by 10:30.

Elmer Straughn Pierson of Grasonville, MD. died Saturday March 4, 2000 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. He was 83.

Born on February 3, 1917 in Grasonville, MD. The son of the late Carroll Clifton and Mabel Straughn Pierson. He attended school in Queen Anne’s County and began working in construction and as a waterman. During WWII Mr. Pierson moved to Baltimore and worked for Bethlehem Steel and later working for Maryland Community Developers Enterprise for 20 years. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Pierson was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Grasonville, MD. Past Commodore of Kent Island Yacht Club in Chester, MD. Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville, MD. and Barbershop Quartet Bayside Chorus in Centreville, MD.

He is survived by his wife to whom he married on October 15, 1938; Mattie Louise Miller Pierson of Grasonville, MD. a son Carroll F. Pierson of Stevensville, MD. a daughter Marjorie Crouse of Grasonville, MD. a brother Rodney Pierson of Salisbury, MD. two (2) sisters June Palmer and Colleen Coursey both of Chester, MD. 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held 11am on Tuesday March 7, 2000 at the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville, MD. Family and friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, and P.A. in Chester, MD. on Monday March 6th, 2000 from 7Pm to 9PM. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Easton, MD. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church 102 School House Lane Grasonville, MD. 21638.

Louise “Maggie” Greaves, 82, died Saturday, March 4, 2000 at the Talbot House, House of Pines in Easton, MD.

She was born on April 20, 1917, the daughter of the late Bishop and Mary Smith Lister of Queenstown. Her husband, Oliver, “Ike” Greaves died in 1971.

Mrs. Greaves worked as a waitress at Holly’s Restaurant in Grasonville for many years, retiring in 1983.

She is survived by a devoted nephew, Michael A. Lister, a sister, Peggy L. Stubbs, a brother, Robert Lister, all of Queenstown, and a brother, Charles “Smitty” Lister, of Centreville. Two sisters, Sally Jane Lister and Catherine L. Capel and three brothers, James Lister, Harry R. Lister and Willard Lister, predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Chapel in Queenstown on Saturday, March 11, 2000 at 3 PM. The family requested in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Queenstown fire Company, P.O. Box 118, Queenstown, MD 21658.

Catherine Elizabeth Ickes of Centreville, MD. died at home on Saturday March 4, 2000. She was 90.
Born on May 31, 1909 in Hungary. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Elizabeth Groesser. In 1912 with her family she immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island, N.Y. and later settled in Baltimore, MD. In her early years Ms. Ickes worked as a ladies maid for over ten years. She married Ralph Ickes who predeceased her and later married Ranson Harry Ickes whom predeceased her in 1989. They resided in Baltimore, MD. where she was a homemaker until moving to Easton, MD. in the early 1980’s. and later moving to be with her family in Centreville in 1994.

She is survived by as son George E. Ickes of Centreville, MD. a daughter Charlotte Allen of East Wenatchee, WA 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren a brother Frank Groesser and sister Elizabeth Till both predeceased her.

Funeral Services will be held on 11Am Tuesday March 7, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday March 6, 2000 from 7PM to 9PM. Interment will be in Maryland’s Veterans Cemetery Eastern Shore near Hurlock, MD.
