Roy E. Pittman

HANCOCK - Roy E. "Bud" Pittman, 81, a resident of Homewood of Williamsport, and formerly of Hancock, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Homewood.

Born in Hancock on Nov. 27, 1915, he was the son of the late Ezra Luther and Olive Teressa Ingram Pittman.

He graduated from Warfordsburg High School in 1934, and from what is now Shippensburg University in 1939. He attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music.

He and his wife owned and operated Pittman's Grocery in Hancock. He owned and operated Hancock Motel.

He served as mayor of the Town of Hancock from 1983 to 1985; and was on the Town Council from 1977 to 1982.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the rank of captain.

He was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church.

He was a member of James W. Bowers Lodge 173 A.F.& A.M. in Hancock, Hagerstown Forest 95, Scottish Rite Bodies of Cumberland, Md. Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, Cumberland, Royal Order of Jesters 119, Tower Commission Shippensburg University, and Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion in Hancock.

He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Betty N. Noonan Pittman of Hancock; two sons, R. Randy Pittman and David L. Pittman, both of Hancock; two sisters, Lucille Charlton and Leona Little, both of Hancock; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Jones.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Hancock United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert G. Brennan Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visistation also will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Betty N. Pittman, P.O. Box 190, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Virginia L. Hiestand

KNOXVILLE, Md. - Virginia Lee Hiestand, 77, of 19419 Frog Eye Road., formerly of Campbellsville, Ky., and Wichita, Kan., died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at her home.

Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Campbellsville, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Ada Lee Meadows Cook.

She retired as a computer operator for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard S. Hiestand of Knoxville; three daughters, Jonna Mendez of Knoxville, Holly Richardson of Richardson, Texas, and Heidi Valbusa of Reston, Va.; one sister, Maxine Eads of Campbellsville; one brother, Jim Cook of Convers, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennifer Hiestand, and one sister, Maurine Murrell.

Services will be Monday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. at Parrott and Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Ave., Campbellsville. Minister J. Chester Badgett will officiate. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Campbellsville.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, 1730 N. Market St., Frederick, Md. 21702; or American Cancer Society, Frederick County Unit, 1011 E. Patrick St., Suite B, Frederick, Md. 21701.

S. Rolfe Gregory

POTOMAC, Md. - S. Rolfe Gregory of Potomac, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy "Ann C." Gregory; one daughter, Barbara M. Greaves; one son, Thomas R. Gregory; four grandsons; two stepgrandchildren; and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at noon at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 5500 River Road, Bethesda, Md. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Leukemia Society, or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Rapp Funeral Services.

Helen E. Conyack

WILLIAMSPORT - Helen Evelyn Roscoe Conyack, 83, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of Woodbridge and Colonia, N.J., died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Homewood Nursing Center, Williamsport.

Born Jan. 25, 1914, in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Alexandra Chochowska Roscoe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Conyack, in 1965.

She was employed by Abraham and Strauss Department Store, Woodbridge, N.J., until retiring in 1987.

She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

She was a member of Woodbridge Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons; Colonia Chapter of Deborah Hospital, Browns Mills, N.J.; and Woodmen of the World and Companions of the Forest of America.

She is survived by one sister, Loretta Bouselli of Port Reading, N.J.; three brothers, John Roscoe of Colonia, Chester Roscoe of Hagerstown, and Walter Roscoe of Lionville, Pa.; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Gataveckas; an infant daughter, Arline Gataveckas; her second husband, Julius Satoski; one sister, Stella Rosentover; and one brother, Henry Roscoe.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Woodbridge, N.J. The Rev. Sean Kenney will be celebrant. Burial will be at noon in Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, N.J.

Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Colonia.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

James W. Curry

James William Curry, 84, of 138 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 11, 1913, in Alexander, W.Va., he was the son of the late Luke Tamblyn and Frances Amelia Gladwell Curry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Evans Curry, in 1977.

He was a 1937 graduate of Glenville State College; and a graduate of West Virginia University, where he received a master's degree.

He was employed by Washington County Board of Education, retiring as principal of Keedysville Elementary School; and formerly was principal at Leitersburg Elementary School.

He attended Brook Hill Methodist Church, French Creek, W.Va.

He was a 50-year member of Rock Cave (W.Va.) Lodge 81 AF&AM, Rock Cave; a life member of Buckhannon Lodge 54 Grand Domain of W.Va.; past president of West Virginia Society of Hagerstown; Washington County Retired Teachers Association.

He was a member of Maryland State Retired Teachers Association and was on the Legislative Committee and was their photographer; Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers; Sons of the American Revolution Christian Ardinger Chapter; Washington Historical Society; Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; Keedysville Ruritan; Republican Club of Washington County; Computer Club of Washington County; and Golden Ballroom Dance Club.

He is survived by two nieces, Carolyn Dye of Miami Lakes, Fla., and Brenda Rommel of Elk Grove, Ill.; two nephews, William A. Evans of Dothan, Ala., and Michael Moore of Wheeling, W.Va.; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Martin Curry.

Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Brooks Hill Methodist Church, French Creek. The Rev. James P. Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in Brooks Hill Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Anthony J. O'Hara

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Anthony J. O'Hara, 67, of Saratoga Springs, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 31, 1930, in Albany, N.Y., he was the son of the late William and Gertrude Hickey O'Hara.

He was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Olean, N.Y.

He was a self-employed advertising executive and copywriter.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Meyer O'Hara; two daughters, Siobian Hicks of Wilmington, Del., and Bridget Wood of Lexington, Ky.; five sons, Kevin O'Hara of Broomfield, Colo., Sean O'Hara of Williston Park, N.Y., Brian O'Hara and Brendan O'Hara, both of Saratoga Springs, and Terence O'Hara of New York City; two sisters, Eleanor Baird and Elizabeth O'Hara, both of New Milford, Conn.; one brother, Richard O'Hara of New Milford; and six grandchildren.

Services and burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 2428 Kanawha Blvd., Charleston, W.Va. 25311; or to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Suite 200, Bethesda, Md. 20814.

Charles S. Mills Jr.

SABILLASVILLE, Md. - Charles Samuel "Sam" Mills Jr., 49, of 14509 Brown Road, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at his home.

Born May 29, 1948, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Ruth Ardinger Mills of Williamsport and the late Charles Samuel Mills Sr.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He retired from the National Park Service, Catoctin National Park.

He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of God.

He was a member of American Legion Post 202, Williamsport, the American Dairy Goat Association, and was the caretaker at Camp Westmar, Sabillasville, since 1979.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Debra K. Robison Mills; one daughter, Amanda C. Mills, at home; two sons, Charles Mills III and Michael K. Mills, both of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Linda Fuller of Hagerstown; two brothers, Roger Mills of Williamsport and Ronald Mills of Hagerstown; two half brothers, Charles Marshall Mills of Funkstown and James Mills; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 2:30 p.m., at Camp Westmar, 14509 Brown Road, Sabillasville. The Rev. Ronnie Stanley will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be sent to Sam Mills Memorial Fund, Frederick County 4-H, 330 Montevue Ave., Frederick, Md. 21702.

Donald L. Eaton Sr.

Donald Leon Eaton Sr., 65, of 252 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 9, 1932, in Keedysville, he was the son of the late Robert L. Eaton Sr. and Anna Marie Rohrer Eaton Marshall.

He was employed by Electromet Corp. and previously with C.J.R. Mechanical in Baltimore.

He was a member of the American Legion in Baltimore.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve M. Maphis Eaton; one daughter, Brenda Stroman of Russellville, Ark.; three sons, Donald L. Eaton Jr., Michael L. Eaton, and Clifford L. Eaton, all of Hagerstown; two sisters, Anna M. Hardin and Della L. Maphis, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Robert Eaton Jr. of Keedysville and Richard L. Eaton of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry L. Eaton.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert D. Swank Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
