Gary W. Walters

JENKS, Okla. - Gary Wayne Walters, 46, of Jenks, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, at his home.

Born April 16, 1951, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Cora Mae Barnhart Walters of Hagerstown and the late Henry S. Walters.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his partner/companion, Ric Poston of Jenks; one daughter, Heather Dillard of Jenks; one son, Chad Poston of Jenks; six sisters, Patricia Eichelberger, Helen Bowers, Margaret Hawbaker and Janet Custer, all of Hagerstown, Martha Gehr and Carol Martin of Florida; four brothers, Henry C. Walters, William Walters, James Walters and Robert Walters, all of Hagerstown; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one nephew.

Memorial services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. James Brethren Church, 17718 Lappans Road, St. James. The Rev. William Stoner will officiate.

Wilmer U. Edwards

HANCOCK - Wilmer U. "Dutch" Edwards, 72, of Myers Street, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Dec. 6, 1924, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa., he was the son of the late Elmer and Nora Strait Edwards.

He was a welder and burner for Pennsylvania Glass Sand (U.S. Silica) near Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in Germany.

He was a member of VFW Post 10502 and Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, both in Hancock; Berkeley Springs Loyal Order of Moose 1483, Berkeley Springs; and AARP.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Betty I. Murphy Edwards, whom he married on Feb. 3, 1951; one daughter, Connie Yeakle of Clear Spring; two sisters, Maxine Howell of Hancock and Katherine Keefer of Big Cove Tannery; four brothers, Glen Edwards and Garvin Edwards, both of Needmore, Pa., Harvey Edwards of Big Cove Tannery and Charles Edwards of Chambersburg, Pa.; one granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Esta Everetts; and two brothers, Lynn Edwards and Melvin Edwards.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Gary Quackenbos will officiate. Burial will be in Alpine Cemetery, near Berkeley Springs. Full military graveside services will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open today from 1 to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

John L. Montgomery

PORTLAND, Ore. - John Lawrence Montgomery, 52, of Portland, died of pulmonary hypertension, Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, in Portland.

Born July 5, 1945, he was the son of Forrest Brookfield and Mary Ellen Carr Montgomery of Portland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Lee Wetzel Montgomery, formerly of Hagerstown, who died three months ago.

He was a 1963 graduate of Portland Union Academy. He was a 1972 graduate of Walla Walla College with a bachelor of science in industrial arts. He received a master's degree in history from Lewis and Clark College.

He served in the Army White Coats for two years. He was stationed at Fort Detrick Army Base, Frederick, Md.

He was a teacher for 20 years at Alice Ott Middle School, formerly Gilbert Middle School, where he taught a variety of classes.

He was of the Seventh-Day Adventist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Montgomery of Portland and Julia Montgomery of College Place, Wash.; three sisters, Linda Eisele Spry, Susan Hudson and Sally Kirkpatrick, all of Portland; two brothers, James Montgomery and David Montgomery, both of Portland; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Tabor Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Portland.

Irene E. Tagg

Irene Elizabeth Tagg, 97, formerly of Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born Aug. 28, 1900, in Harmony, Md., she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Bessie Gladhill Wiles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph S. Tagg Sr., in 1981.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one brother, Merle Wiles of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Giffin; and two sons, Ivan L. Tagg Sr. and Ralph S. Tagg Jr.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Luther J. Zimmerman Jr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Luther James Zimmerman Jr., 81, of 11512 Pinesburg Road, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 12, 1916, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Luther James and Clara Whitner Zimmerman Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Adeline Nalley Zimmerman, in 1994.

He was employed as a supervisor for Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, retiring in 1984.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

He is survived by one daughter, JoAnn Hawthorne of Baltimore; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Funkstown Cemetery, Funkstown. The Rev. John Buchanan will officiate.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open after 10 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Living Waters Chapel, 8719 Neck Road, Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Nellie L. McTighe

A memorial service for Nellie L. McTighe, 78, of 18016 Putter Drive, Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Wayne L. Schwanke will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to the local chapter of American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Carter W. Motz

STERLING, Va. - Carter Wade Motz, 8-month-old son of John and Anne Marie Motz, of 46610 Silhouette Square, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Georgetown Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Born March 20, 1997, in Arlington, Va., he was preceded in death on that day by his twin brother, Jonah Baldoss Motz.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Tristan Charles Motz; grandparents, John and Jan Motz of Herndon, Va., and Alton and Alleene Hoopengardner of Buck Valley, Pa.; great-grandparents, Maurice and Mary Messersmith of Hagerstown, and Bob and Ruth Motz of Knoxville, Tenn.; and uncles and aunts.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at Georgetown Medical Center chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to Georgetown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Georgetown Medical Center, Washington, D.C. 20057.

Jack R. Doarnberger

HAMPSTEAD, Md. - Jack Richard Doarnberger, 74, of Hampstead, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Towson, Md.

Born May 17, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Harry and Nan Lewis Doarnberger.

He was a retired building manager for USF&G Insurance in Baltimore, where he worked for 35 years.

He was an active member of Grace Bible Church, Manchester, Md., where he was head of the board of directors.

A veteran of World War II, he was a sergeant with the U.S. Army in Europe and the Philippines.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ridenour Doarnberger; two sons, Stephen Doarnberger of Manchester and John Doarnberger of Hampstead; two brothers, John Doarnberger of Hagerstown and Lewis Doarnberger of Dover, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Doarnberger; and one brother, Grason Doarnberger.

Services will be Sunday at 6 p.m. at Grace Bible Church, Manchester. The Rev. Paul Wenzel will officiate. Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Hampstead Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church Sunday from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Bible Church, 3253 Charmil Drive, Manchester, Md. 21102.

Arrangements are by Eline Funeral Home, Hampstead.

Beatrice M. Place

Beatrice M. Place, 92, of 233 Potomac Heights, Hagerstown, and formerly of Millbrook, N.Y., and Eatontown, N.J., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born May 26, 1905, in Maynard, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Francis W. and Margaret S. Dowler Hancock.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, George T. Smith, in 1933; and by her second husband, Joseph A. Place, in 1952.

She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown.

She is survived by one son, Roland F. Smith of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Frances Corneliussen; and one brother, Clarence Hancock.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, corner of West Washington and South Prospect streets, Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Ailstock will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Thomas R. Hinkle

Thomas Randall "Randy" Hinkle, 42, of 844 Marshall St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at his home.

Born May 24, 1955, in Bremerton, Wash., he was the son of Shirley Bark Hinkle of Hagerstown and the late Russell Hinkle.

He was employed by John R. Oliver Construction Co. from 1973 to 1979. He was most recently employed by the city of Hagerstown, as a fire apparatus operator, since July 4, 1979. He and his wife also owned and operated Hinkle's Hub Cap Center.

He was a member of North American Rod and Gun Club; Antietam Fire Co., since May 1, 1974, where he was a member of the Standing Committee and was chairman of the carnival for three years; and a member of Carlisle Car Show for 16 years.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Barbara Miller Hinkle, whom he married Oct. 24, 1981; one daughter, Heather Nicole Hinkle, at home; one sister, Gayle Spoonhour of Williamsport; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. W. Carl Zinn will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
