Joseph V. Shoemaker

BALTIMORE - Joseph Vernon Shoemaker, 77, of 1174 Newfield Road, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at his home.

Born April 4, 1920, in Hancock, he was the son of the late George A. and Catherine Myers Shoemaker.

He retired from Western Maryland Railroad as an engineer.

He is survived by his wife, Anna C. Gripp Shoemaker; two sons, Edmund Shoemaker and R. Craig Shoemaker, both of Baltimore; one sister, Jean Griese of Baltimore; one brother, George Shoemaker of Baltimore; and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Shoemaker; one sister, Dorothy Shoemaker; and one brother, Melvin Shoemaker.

Burial and services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 929 Ingleside Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21228.

Funeral arrangements were by Sterling Ashton Funeral Home, Catonsville, Md.

Sonja A. Gates

MAUGANSVILLE - Sonja Aletta Gates, 56, of 13910 Green Mountain Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 2, 1941, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd A. and Carrie E. Bowers Davis Sr.

She was a past member of Smithsburg Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald Gates; one son, Roy Barnhard Jr. of Maugansville; three sisters, Sarah LeDane of Smithsburg, Joan Durand and Mary Franklin, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Roger Davis of Camden, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rosalyn Dale, Dorothy Monninger and Juanita Jacobs; and six brothers, Hubert E. Davis, Robert Davis, Franklin Davis, Edward Davis, Edgar Davis, and Lloyd A. Davis Jr.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Minister Bryan R. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Houston D. Snowden

BALTIMORE - Houston Davis Snowden, 70, of Baltimore, and formerly of Bolivar, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at Fort Howard Veterans Medical Center, Fort Howard, Md.

Born March 24, 1927, in Bolivar, he was the son of the late John Baptist and Ophelia Davis Jackson Snowden.

He graduated from Page-Jackson High School, Charles Town, W.Va. He attended Storer College, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Boston University, Boston. He later graduated from Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va., with a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education. He studied at West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.; University of Maryland, College Park, Md.; and Morgan State University, Baltimore.

He was employed by Baltimore public schools. For 13 years, he taught at Hampstead Hill Junior High School; and seven years at Carver Vocational-Technical High School. He also taught English part-time at Baltimore Talmudical Academy for one year.

A U.S. Army veteran, he received advanced training at the X-ray Technician School. He served in Japan with the Medical Detachment, 24th Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged in January 1949. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He attended the Medical Field Service School at Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He also was the registrar to the Medical Company, Camp Atterbury, Ind., and Fort Riley, Kansas, until his honorable discharge in 1954.

While in the service, he received the World War II Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal of Japan; Korean Service Medal with three campaign stars; Medical Badge; Commendation Ribbon with Medal Pennant; National Defense Service Medal; battlefield commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant; Distinguished Service Cross; and the Soldier Medal for Bravery.

He wrote "From Whence Cometh," the history of the Snowden family from 1776 to 1977.

He was a member of Shepherd College Alumni Association; Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club; 9th Infantry Regiment, Manchu Association; National Order of Battlefield Commission; Korean War Branch; Second (Indian Head) Division Association Inc.; American Legion, Post 297; Alpha Psi Omega National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity; AARP; and Maryland Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by a special friend, Paul A. Smith of Randallstown, Md.; one brother, John R. Snowden Sr. of Baltimore; two nieces; one nephew; one great-niece; three great-nephews; one aunt; one uncle; and cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Royce L. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

Memorial donations may be made to Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425.

Anne L. Willard

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Anne Louise Willard, 69, of 5108 SW 103 Way, and formerly of Fountain Head Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Shands Hospital, University of Florida, Gainesville.

Born Dec. 1, 1928, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late George Gordon and Miriam Iglehart Roberts.

She was a graduate of Westminster High School; Maryland Institute College of Art; and Peabody Conservatory of Music.

She was a former employee of Fairchild Aircraft.

She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist of Boston.

She was a member of Maryland Institute Alumni Association.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Roe Willard; one son, Mark Bradford Willard of Gainesville; five sisters, Margaret Wagner, Doris Wenger, Miriam Emmert, Ruth Hearn and Ethel Sable; and one brother, George G. Roberts.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Roberts.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Virginia M. Lindquist CS will officiate.

Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Earl J. Fisher

Earl Johnson "Jim" Fisher, of 16901 Harbinger Court, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Newton D. Baker Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Spurlock Fisher, in 1996.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II. He was wounded in combat.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the State Highway Administration.

He was a life member of Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion, Frederick, Md.; AMVETS Post 2, Frederick; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936, Hagerstown.

He is survived by two sons, Edward J. Fisher III and David Fisher; one stepdaughter, Georgia Fisher of Asheville, N.C.; and one stepson, Eugene Lemar of Frederick.

He donated his body to science.

Memorial services will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion, 1450 Tancy Ave., Frederick.

The omission of flowers is requested.

Memorial donations may be made to FSK Post 11, Earl Fisher Memorial Fund, 1450 Tancy Ave., Frederick, Md. 21702.

Arrangements are by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Sonja A. Gates

MAUGANSVILLE - Sonja Aletta Gates, 56, of 13910 Green Mountain Drive, who died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, also is survived by one son, Roy Barnhart Jr. of Maugansville.

Leo H. Jones

BOONSBORO - Leo Howard Jones, 78, of 302 N. Main St., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at his home.

Born Jan. 2, 1919, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Earl Lester Casey and Beuila Moats Jones.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He served with the Tunisian Sicilian Italian Campaign Tank Division and Company A 752nd Tank Battalion.

He was retired from Mander's Decorating Co.

He was a member of Mount Nebo United Methodist Church, Boonsboro.

He was a member of Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10, Boonsboro.

He is survived by his wife, of 28 years, Lauretta Florence Smith Jones; one sister, Brenda Murray of Charlottesville, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Eugena Houser.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. John W. Zsittnik will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery, where military honors will be provided by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary M. Crosby

Mary Margaret Crosby, 78, of Hagerstown, died Monday Dec. 1, 1997, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.

Born in 1919, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Allen Sell.

She was employed for many years as a cook in various Western Maryland restaurants.

She was a long-time member of St. Augustines Church in Williamsport.

She is survived by seven children, Mary Bishopsburger, Maureen Crosby, Margaret Care, Patrick Crosby, Dennis Crosby, Timothy Crosby and Sean Crosby; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church in Williamsport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine's Church.
