Iona G. Brewer
Iona G. Brewer, 98, of 1115 Woodland Way, Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.
Born July 21, 1899, in Mount Carroll, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Capitola D. Grimm George.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence L. Willey.
She was employed by the federal government as a statistician, retiring in 1961.
She was a member of First Christian Church.
She was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion Auxiliary and American Association of Retired Federal Employees.
She is survived by two cousins, Jane N. Crist of St. Thomas, Pa., and John J. Nozzi of Chambersburg, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross A. Brewer.
Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate.
The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, prior to the services at the cemetery.

Elvia M. Crum
BOONSBORO - Elvia May Crum, 80, of 20917 Netz Road, who died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Edward Leggett.
Timothy M. Shipley
NEWELLTON, La. - Timothy Michael "Mike" Shipley, 24, of Newellton, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Newellton.
He was a native of Pell City, Ala.
He was the son of Phillip and Barbara Shipley of Baskin, La.
He was a survey crewman with a pipeline survey crew.
He was a member of Baskin Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Pauline Shipley of Williamsport; two sisters, Teresa Marie Searcy of Newellton and Pamula Jean Combest of West Monroe, La.; three brothers, Phillip Eugene Shipley of Baskin, Donald Wayne Shipley of Cooks Springs, Ala., and Rickey Dale Shipley of Ashville, Ala.; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Community Memorial Funeral Home, Winnsboro, La. Burial will be in Reagan Cemetery near Baskin.
John R. Newby
WILLIAMSPORT - John Roswell Newby, 84, of Homewood Retirement Community, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 7, 1913, in Winner, S.D., he was the son of the late John Jackson and Elnor Briggs Newby.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Jankovic Newby.
He retired from Erie-Lackawanna Railroad.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Fairmount, N.Y., where he served as an usher.
He was a member of the American Legion and was past commander of Post 974 in Whitney Point, N.Y. He was a member of The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and served for many years as president of his union local.
He is survived by one daughter, Karen Ann Newby of Syracuse, N.Y.; four sons, John Gregory Newby, M.D., of Hagerstown, Thomas Edward Newby of Skaneateles, N.Y., James Philip Newby of Syracuse, and Kevin Robert Newby of El Cajon, Calif.; two sisters, Royx Lafflin of Bradenton, Fla., and Leora Wilson of Sarasota, Fla.; one brother, Leon Newby of Castle Creek, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Smith; and one brother, Harland Newby.

Martha E. Guessford
Martha Ellen Zimmerman Guessford, 87, of Colton Villa Nursing Home, Hagerstown; and formerly of Williamsport, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 8, 1910, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late James Albert and Anna May Springer Griffith.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Zimmerman, in 1960.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Boonsboro Church of God, Boonsboro.
She is survived by five sisters, Della Long and Pauline Ecker, both of Keedysville, Margaret Marty and Elsie Flook, both of Hagerstown and Helen Easterday of Boonsboro; three brothers, Howard Griffith of Hagerstown, Elmer Griffith of Mount Lena and Silas Griffith of Middletown, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus W. Guessford, in 1993; one sister, Mary Powell; and one brother, Albert Griffith.
Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Boonsboro Cemetery. The Rev. James Caldwell and the Rev. Martin Mauck will officiate.
Visitation will be Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport.
Arthur F. Ahalt
BOONSBORO - Arthur Franklin "Boots" Ahalt, 75, of 7814 Sharpsburg Pike, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Leon Franklin and Ida F. Price Ahalt.
He was of the Protestant faith.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II in the European Theater and Japan.
He retired from Fairchild Aircraft, after 43 years of service.
He was a member of United Auto Workers, Local 842; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936; and Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, of 41 years, Mary Jane Spessard Ahalt; one stepson, Russell B. Wingerd of Boonsboro; two sisters, Leona Elliott of Hagerstown and Marie Strasbaugh of Baltimore; one brother, Lester Plume; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Allen L. Ahalt.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, Md.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Rhoda J. Glosser
Rhoda Jane Glosser, 87, of 833 Armstrong Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born May 14, 1910, in Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Jane Keefer Gorman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Glosser Sr., in 1994.
She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, where she was a member of New Horizon Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean G. Glosser and Dolores Brandenburg, both of Hagerstown; one son, John Glosser Jr. of Cumberland, Md.; two sisters, Mary Motz of Greencastle, Pa., and Thelma Parmer of Fannettsburg, Pa.; four brothers, Harry Gorman of Mercersburg, Pa., Kenneth Gorman of Greencastle, Pa., Ralph Gorman of Hagerstown and Glenn Gorman of St. Thomas, Pa.; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Gorman; and one brother, Richard Gorman.
Services will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dean M. Miller and the Rev. Janice Dorsey will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday one half hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Roy W. Green
Roy William Green, 82, of 116 Jonathan St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Colton Villa Nursing Center in Hagerstown.
Born March 23, 1915, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Luther Charles and Mabel Leatherman Green.
He was employed by George Cline Feed Service for 15 years, retiring in 1977. He was previously employed by Pony Express Trucking and also was a self-employed farmer for most of his life.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of New Life Christian Ministries in Williamsport and attended Burnside First Church of God in Sharpsburg.
He was a member of American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro and AMVETS Post 10 in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Magdalene P. Kline Green; three daughters, Rebecca E. Lange of Sharpsburg, Ruth V. Carpenter of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Joyce A. Green of Hagerstown; four sons, Roy R. Green Sr., John L. Green and Jacob W. Green Sr., all of Hagerstown, and Robert L. Green of Boonsboro; three sisters, Mary E. Gomez of Gaithersburg, Md., Ethel M. Rowe and Charlotte Dixon, both of Boonsboro; one brother, Harry L. Green of Hagerstown; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Geraldine Butts; one son, Charles Green; one brother, Jacob P. Green; and one granddaughter.
There will be no viewing.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Ernest E. Witmer will officiate. Military honors will be provided by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown.
