April 26, 2000

Winifred Edwards Hemsley of Chestertown, M7d. died on April 26, 2000 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital. She was 78.

She was born on April 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Dr. Charles R. and Ruth C. Edwards.

She was the wife of the late Col. Richard Tilghman Hemsley III who predeceased her on August 18, 1998.

Mrs. Hemsley was a 1943 journalism graduate from Northwestern University and immediately found employment with the Baltimore News Post as a reporter. She married then Captain Richard Tilghman Hemsley III and due to his military involvement moved to Rio De’ Janeiro, Troy, New York, Dayton, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Baltimore, Md., Los Angeles, California, Washington D.C., and in 1978 upon her husbands retirement they moved to Chestertown, Md.

During that time she never lost touch with her journalism talents and was well known for her prolific letter writing.

In Chestertown she was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Kent, the Daughters of the American Revolution Kent County Chapter, Washington College Women’s League, and Chester River Yacht and Country Club. She was also a member of Chi Omega Sorority.

In addition to writing, Mrs. Hemsley enjoyed swimming, gardening camellias, traveling, and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter: Vickie Lynn Hemsley Conant and grandchildren: Richard Thomas and Charles Edward Conant all of Falls Church, Va.; a sister: Nancy Schoepperle of Buffalo, Ny., along with 4 nieces and a nephew. Two daughters: the late Anne Louise Hemsley Herreilers (1978) and Dixie Lee Hemsley (1984) both predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held on Monday May 1, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church near Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday April 30, 2000 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 and on Monday between the hour of 9:30 to 10:30 at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 7579 Sandy Bottom Road Chestertown, Md. 21620.

April 25, 2000

Charles John DeManss of Stevensville, MD died at St. Mary’s Hospital on April 25, 2000. He was 78.

He was born on May 2, 1921 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Julius and Rosina Maroone DeManss. Mr. DeManss was a Physical Education Teacher and Athletic Director at Catonsville High School from 1946 to 1983. While at Catonsville High School, he led the athletic teams to numerous County Championships in Soccer, Football, Lacrosse, Track and Wrestling. Mr. DeManss was also a retired Major in the United States Army. He had been awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge while repelling Germans during the battle of the Bulge in World War II. He lived most of his life in Catonsville, MD and later retired to Kent Island. He was a member of the St. Mark’s parish in Catonsville, MD and St. Christopher’s parish in Kent Island, the Knights of Columbus, Maryland Saltwater Fisherman’s Association, the Elks Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a loving husband and father, consummate educator, complete coach and defender of freedom.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosina Patterson DeManss, his children; Michael and Leslie DeManss, Marcia and James Stewart, Karen and Charles Feagley, and Stephen and Mary DeManss and his grandchildren; Alexander, Stephanie, Benjamin, Amy, Mathew, Jason, Jordan and April.

A Funeral Liturgy for Charles John DeManss will be celebrated on Saturday, April 29, 2000 at 10 AM at the St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. Friends and family may visit at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Friday, April 28, 2000 between the hours of 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM.

April 20, 2000

Jean I. Gee, 68, of Easton, MD, died April 20, 2000 at their home of heart failure and complications related to Parkinson’s Disease.

Private arrangements were made immediately thereafter as per her wishes.

Mrs. Gee was born in Kulpmont, PA, and for the exception of a 6 year residence in Middlebury, CT, she had lived in MD for over 40 years. Her hobbies included stylish interior decorating, traveling, and volunteering with the Women’s Auxiliary at the Easton Commission Shop, however, her passion and pleasure was golfing, both nationally and internationally, with her lifetime partner and husband.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Thomas Joseph Gee of Easton, a son, Mark Thomas Gee, and a daughter, Sharon Gee, both of Annapolis.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or to the local chapter of the Parkinson’s Support Group, c/o Talbot Hospice House, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Alvin Martin Whitby, Sr. of Trappe, formerly of Queen Anne County, died on Thursday, April 20, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 65.

Born in Baltimore on October 4, 1934, he was the son of the late Clarence and Margaret Long Whitby. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-60 and, following his release from active duty, continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard until 1962. He married the former Frances Lovinia Rishel in 1961 and they were together until 1979. He worked for Southern States as a warehouse supervisor for 23 years and then as a farm hand raising horses for Parker Callahan for ten years. At the time of his death, he was self-employed as a handyman.

Mr. Whitby is survived by his wife, the former Gloria Lee Dodson, whom he has been with for 20 years; three daughters, Teresa L. Steenken of Ingleside, Sandra A. Radcliffe of Trappe, and Deborah S. Steenken of Preston; a son, Alvin M. Whitby, Jr. of Easton; three step-daughters, Christine Jinkens of LaFayette, TN, Glenda Rawlings of Shaddyside, and Rita Crow of Edgewater; four step-sons, H. Gene Crow of Bridgetown, Lester Lee Crow of Prince Frederick, Larry Walter Crow of Prince Frederick, and Kevin Brian Crow of Edgewater; five sisters, Catherine Gilbert of Cambridge, Louise Jackson of Tiffon, GA, Mary Alice Willis of Florida, Joyce Ann Rishel of Easton, and Doris Mae Hawk of Easton; three brothers, Robert Whitby of Florida, James Whitby of Queenstown, and Nelson Whitby of Easton; 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Dorothy Murphy and Betty Meekins, are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, April 22, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Landing Neck Cemetery, Trappe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.

April 19, 2000

Mr. John Macardell Walton, Sr., a prominent retired architect died at his home on Richland Farm, Cordova, on Wednesday, April 19, 2000. He was 87.

Born at Hyattsville, MD, July 2, 1912, he was the son of the late William Randolph And Mary Agnes Becher Walton. After attending Hyattsville Elementary School, Gonzaga College High School and graduating from St. Anthony's High School in 1931, he attended the Catholic University of America where he graduated in 1936 with a degree in Architecture. He entered private practice as a Registered Architect, retiring from the firm of Walton, Madden and Cooper, Architects in Riverdale, MD in 1975.

Mr. Walton was widely recognized for his architectural achievements which included the design of numerous schools, college buildings, court houses, hospitals, shopping centers, private residences and churches including St. Michaels Catholic Chapel, St. Michaels, MD and St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Chester. In addition, he designed the first "trotting" horse race tracks in Prince George's County and the State of Maryland at the Rosecroft and Laurel Raceways and was also instrumental in obtaining the first racing dates for these two trotting tracks from the Maryland General Assembly. President Dwight D. Eisenhower called upon him to redesign the staff Dining Room" in the White House and to design a garden wall and outbuilding at the President's Gettysburg, PA farm. In 1959, Pope John XX111 awarded him the "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" Papal Medal for his charitable deeds which included his "many efforts to help priests and the religious order." In 1975, he received the Alumni Achievement Award in the Field of Architecture from the Catholic University of America.

A member of the American Institute of Architects, he was also active in the work of the Regional Public Advisory Panel on Architectural Services to the General Services Administration, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.'s Building Committee, the Prince George's County Beautification Committee, the Prince George's County Hall of Fame Committee, the Citizens Advisory Committee for Preparation of a Historic Preservation Plan in Prince George's County, the American Carriage Association, the Knights of Columbus, the John Carroll Society, the Committee for the Restoration of the Mary Surratt House, the Rotary Club, the Board of Directors of the Clinton Bank, the Washington Area Regional Advisory Board of the Equitable Trust Bank, the Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce, the Washington D.C. Board of Trade, the President's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped, the Ploughman and Fisherman of Prince George's County, the Ninth Battalion Association of the Maryland State Guard, the Holly Society of America, the Marlborough Hunt Club and the Prince George's County Animal Rescue League of which he was a Past President.

A resident of Cordova since 1995, he has previously lived at "Ginger Cove" in Annapolis from 1990 - 1995 and at "His Lordship's Kindness" in Clinton from 1955 - 1990. His church affiliations included Sts. Peter And Paul Catholic Church in Easton, MD, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Clinton and St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Hyattsville.

His first wife, the former Sara Ann Robinson whom he married in Hyattsville in June of 1938, died in October of 1988. His second wife, the former Dorothy Hertzog whom he married in Annapolis in December of 1989, died in May of 1995. .

Mr. Walton is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Ruppert of Fairfield, PA and Joan Marie Dent of Cordova, MD; a son, John Macardell Walton, Jr. of Clinton, MD; a brother, Walter F. Walton of Pittsburgh, PA; three stepchildren; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charlotte Anne Severa of Chester, MD died at the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Wednesday, April 19, 2000. She was 94.

Born in Chester, Queen Anne County, Maryland on August 9, 1905. Charlotte attended Chester Elementary School; She also graduated from Stevensville High School in 1923 and from Gill Business College, Baltimore, in 1925. She started working for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Severa worked in the Chester Post Office from 1955 until 1972. She married Edward Severa on November 6, 1931. Mr. Severa died November 6, 1972. She was the daughter of William T. and Daisy A. Livingston, both deceased. Her sisters Naomi Lins Snyder died 1986, Ellen Hoxter died 1990, Hazel Barton died 1974, her brother William Livingston Jr. died 1971. She is survived by a son Edward Franklin Severa Jr., daughter-in-law Shirley, a daughter Linda Severa Collier, son-in-law Francis “Butch” Collier, Grandsons Ned Severa, Adam Britt and Scott Collier, Granddaughters Melinda Britt Sewell, Nannette Severa, a granddaughter Rebecca Leigh Severa who died in 1967, and eight great-grandchildren. Charlotte was a lifetime member of Kent Island United Methodist Church, where she was active in church affairs, taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Kent Island heritage Society, a lifetime member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Company, and a fifty-year member of Chester Homemakers and Grasonville AARP. She served as Notary Public for 60 years. Any memorial donations may be made to Kent Island United Methodist Church P.O. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2000 at 11 AM at the Kent Island United Methodist Church, Chester, MD. Friends and family may call on Friday, April 21, 2000 between the hours of 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home Chester, MD. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery.

John Robert Fountain of Easton died at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton on Wednesday, April 19, 2000. He was 90.

Born in Easton on February 26, 1910, in the home on Goldsborough Street where he resided his entire life, he was the son of the late Alexander and Anna Mary Trax Fountain. After graduating from Easton High School in 1926 he attended St. John's College in Annapolis before graduating from The Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore in 1931. He returned to Easton where he farmed with his brother and during the founding year of the Country School in 1934 was the Head Master. During World War II he served in the European Theatre of Operations in the U.S. Army and was part of the 29th Division and later the 8th Army under General Patton, he participated in battles from Normandy to Belgium. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and among his decorations were the Bronze Star, The Combat Infantryman's Badge and five Battle Stars. Following his release from active duty he returned to Easton where he worked in the family business before spending the rest of his life active in managing his own private investments.

A lifelong resident of Easton he was a member and past Commander of E.E. Streets Memorial Post #5118 VFW, The Talbot Post #70 American Legion and Talbot County Historical Society. He was active in Boy Scouts serving as Scoutmaster of Troop #190. A long time member of Trinity Cathedral, he had served as Senior Warden, Vestryman, Treasurer and had sung in the choir for many years. He received the Bishops Award for service to his church and the Easton Diocese.

Mr. Fountain is survived by his brother, James H. Fountain of Easton; two nieces, Margaret F. Spillane of Winter Haven, FL and Nancy Chandonnet of Easton and four nephews, Alexander D. Fountain, Jr. of Oxford, W. Thomas Fountain of Easton, James M. Fountain of Portland, OR and Jeffrey E. Fountain of Gunnison, CO.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2000 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Cathedral, Easton.

Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Friends may call at his home, 117 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD from 5-7 PM on Friday, April 21, 2000.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Cathedral, 315 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD 21601 or Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

April 18, 2000

Frances Margaret Grunden of Easton died at the Genesis ElderCare-The Pines, Easton on Tuesday, April 18, 2000. She was 87.

Born in Easton on July 1, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Bertha Patrick Gay.

A lifelong resident of Easton, she had owned and operated Gay's Seafood Market on West Street, Easton for 60 years prior to retiring in the early 90's.

Her husband, Harry W. Grunden died in 1941.

Mrs. Grunden is survived by a son, Harry W. Grunden of Easton; two sisters, Katherine Gay Hopkins of Easton and Louise Gay Worm of Preston; two half-sisters, Pauline Green Cole of Easton and Delores Green Holland of Denton; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton on Thursday, April 20, 2000 at 1:00 PM.
