Hazel Mullenax

WILLIAMSPORT - Hazel Mullenax, 85, formerly of Bartow, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Sept. 5, 1912, in Highland County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Harriet Sponaugle Mullenax.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Calhoun Mullenax, in 1989.

She was a member of Church of God, Durbin, W.Va.

She is survived by four daughters, Helen Cook, with whom she resided, and Arlene Hause, both of Hagerstown, Charlene Gossard of Williamsport, and Linda Mallow of Harman, W.Va.; four sons, Murrel Mullenax of Horseshoe, N.C., Dale Mullenax of Hagerstown, Arthur "Bud" Mullenax and Wallace Mullenax, both of Bartow; one sister, Ethel Rexrode of Hightown, Va.; one brother, Ray Mullenax of Staunton, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin Mullenax and Aaron Mullenax; one granddaughter; one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Services will be Sunday at 11 a.m. at Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Va. Brother Gregory Tyler will officiate. Burial will be in Mullenax Cemetery, on Alleghany Mountain, Highland County, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Marie S. Kline

FREDERICK, Md. - Marie S. Kline, 93, formerly of Frederick, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick.

Born Aug. 2, 1904, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late John D. and Annie Poole Biddinger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence N. Kline, in 1986.

She retired in 1966 after 16 years with Bucheimer Leather Factory.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by five daughters, Ethel L. Burdette of Salem, W.Va., Ruth N. Sexton of Myersville, Md., Doris J. Blickenstaff of New Plymouth, Idaho, and Nancy A. Brashears and Shirley M. Cook, both of Frederick; one son, Harold Robert Kline Sr. of Union Bridge, Md.; one sister, Dorothy M. Ausherman of Dover, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Otheata Kline; one son, Clarence N. Kline Jr.; and two granddaughters.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville. The Rev. Norman D. Kemmerer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, 1730 N. Market St., Frederick, Md. 21701; or to the charity of one's choice.

David W. Sowers Jr.

TOMBALL, Texas - David W. Sowers Jr., 90, of Tiffany Walk Retirement Center, and formerly of Hancock, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Tomball Regional Hospital, Tomball.

Born Aug. 17, 1907, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late David W. and Carrie Ethel Peck Sowers Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Marie Smith Sowers, in 1974.

He was a 1929 graduate of Cornell University.

He worked on forestry projects in western states. From 1933 to 1944, he was superintendent of the CCC Camp in Little Orleans, Md., and from 1941 until his retirement in 1972, he was senior forester for the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co.

He was a member of the Washington County Planning Commission and Washington County Forestry Board. He was a past member and past president of Hancock Rotary Club.

He served two terms as mayor of Hancock from 1977 to 1981. He was a member of Board of Directors of the Washington County Community Action Council in 1977 and a member of the board of directors of Potomac Bend Health Care Center in Hancock. From 1978-81, he was a member of the board of directors of the Health Systems Agency of Western Maryland.

He worked with the Tomball Texas Chamber of Commerce and was editor of the Tiffany Walk News Letter.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hancock.

He is survived by two daughters, Carrie Mills of Frostproof, Fla., and Kathryn Pickett of Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, East High Street., Hancock, Md. 21750; or to American Heart Association, 322 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Beulah A. Renner

MAUGANSVILLE - Beulah Armatha "Betty" Renner, 86, of 14020 Village Mill Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 6, 1911, in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Harry V. and Susie F. Bingaman Hamby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George B. "Jake" Renner Jr.

She was employed with Washington County Hospital, for 25 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She was a member of West End Seniors; Ladies Auxiliary at Washington County Hospital; American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 Auxiliary; Moose Association; and AARP.

She is survived by two sons, George B. Renner III and Harry J. Renner, both of Hagerstown; four sisters, Mary C. Bartles, Martha E. Ryan and Hazel I. Gilardi, all of Hagerstown, and Frances V. Eichelberger of Maugansville; one brother, Harry L. Hamby of Maugansville; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, June A. Tritch; three sisters, Anna Bartles, Elsie Schildnecht and Helen Fox; and four brothers, Lester C. Hamby, Frank R. Hamby, David H. Hamby and James M. Hamby.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert Barton and the Rev. Darryl Zoller, APC, OSL, will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Elevator Fund, corner of Church and Winter Streets, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Richard S. Phillips

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was incorrectly reported that Richard S. Phillips, 76, of Grand Rapids, who died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, was employed at The Herald-Mail. It was his father, Samuel E. Phillips Sr. who was employed by The Herald-Mail.

Rena L. Sperry

FUNKSTOWN - Rena Lee Sperry, 56, of 36 W. Baltimore St., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, was former owner and operator of Funkstown Tavern.

Carlos A. Grey

FAIRPLAY - Carlos Allen "Snook" Grey, 83, of 8635 Sharpsburg Pike, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 11, 1914, in Dargan, he was the son of the late Martin Luther and Anna Eugenia Eichelberger Grey.

He was employed by Arnett's Garage and retired in 1980. He previously was a self-employed farmer for 28 years.

He was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren, Tilghmanton.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith Irene Mongan Grey; one sister-in-law, Nancy L. Youngblood of Fairplay, whom she helped to care for; four nieces; and one nephew.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Manor Cemetery, Tilghmanton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open at 9 a.m. Sunday for the convenience of family and friends.

Memorial donations may be to Manor Church of the Brethren, 18511 Manor Church Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713; or Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Marguerite R. Snowden

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. - Marguerite R. Snowden, 92, of Fruitland Park, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at her home.

Born April 27, 1905, in Ripley, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late George and Eva Wilson Ryer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Gilbert Snowden.

She was a retired school teacher.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Leesburg, Fla.

She is survived by one stepdaughter, Imogene Funk of Chambersburg, Pa.; one stepson, Ernest Snowden Jr. of Washington State; and a close friend, Margaret Shaffer of Fruitland.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Elzie L. Farrow

Elzie Lionel Farrow, 86, of 11332 Greenberry Road, Hagerstown, who died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, was the son of the late Nannie Shank Farrow. He also is survived by a sister, Marie P. Burgan of Funkstown.

Lee H. Wolf

Lee Hilliard Wolf, 77, of 920 Mount Aetna Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Henry and Marie Greenwalt Wolf.

He was owner and operator of Wolf's Auto Repair for 43 years before retiring.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He also was a member of American Legion, Funkstown Post 211, where he was past commander; and Potomac Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia A. Wolf; one daughter, Peggy Paylor of Clear Spring; one son, Robert Wolf of York, Pa.; one sister, Jane M. Goodell of New Holland, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Eddie Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 15 High St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
