Earl M. Rohr

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Earl Mason Rohr, 77, of Santa Ana, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Vencore Hospital, Westminster, Calif.

Born in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Charles and Viola McFarland Rohr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Loving Rohr, in 1994.

He was a 1938 graduate of Williamsport High School. He attended Hagerstown Business College, completing a course in junior accounting.

He was president of Earl M. Rohr Associates of Los Angeles until his retirement. He was a director, president and first vice president of South Coast Shores Homeowners' Association. At the time of his death, he was director at large.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by one brother, Joseph R. Rohr of Knoxville, Md.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Rohr and Orville Rohr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hoag Hospital Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 6100, Newport Beach, Calif. 92658.

Helen M. Godwin

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Helen Moses Godwin, 94, of Alexandria, and formerly of Wilson, N.C., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Alexandria Hospital.

Born Nov. 8, 1903, in Macon County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late David and Eleanora Brown Moses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Godwin.

She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Wilson, and the Home Demonstration Club. She attended First Baptist Church in Alexandria.

She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Patricia Godwin Henson of Springfield, Va.; three sons, Dr. Ira D. Godwin of Fairfax, Va., Randolph R. "Randy" Godwin of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Jerry L. Godwin of Hagerstown and Columbia, Md.; one sister, Mamie Gertrude Moses of Sylvia, N.C.; one brother, Carl David Moses of Murphy, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas S. Godwin.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Wilson. The Rev. Irvin Adcock and the Rev. David Barnes will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Wilson.

The family will receive friends at Shingleton Funeral Home, 2407 W. Nash St., Wilson, Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times may be contacted at the Best Western in Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gideons.

Earl M. Rubeck

Earl Melvin Rubeck, 74, of 101 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at his home.

Born July 16, 1923, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Nathan Howard and Cora Aretta Knable Rubeck.

He was a former farmer and plasterer. He was employed for 16 years by Hagerstown Rubber Co. He retired in 1986 from Londontown Corp. in Boonsboro after 20 years.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Virginia Jones Rubeck, whom he married on May 2, 1948; three daughters, Carolyn Wise of Boonsboro, Patricia Davis of Hagerstown and Donna Toms of Myersville, Md.; one son, Raymond Richard Rubeck of Hagerstown; one half-sister, Carol Ann Rubeck; one half-brother, James Franklin Rubeck of Williamsport; two children, whom he raised, Brenda Lee Myers of Hagerstown and Melvin Leroy Jones Jr. of Paris, Tenn.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Elizabeth Stine; one brother, Grover Newton Rubeck; and one grandson.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Rodney Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Samples Manor Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary J. Fogle

WOODSBORO, Md. - Mary Jane Fogle, 72, of 9110 Gravel Hill Road, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at Frederick Health Care Center, Frederick, Md.

Born Feb. 1, 1925, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Keller Andrew and Iva Ione Green Wolfe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Ray Fogle, in 1990.

She attended St. John's United Church of Christ, Woodsboro.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith K. Rogers of Westminster, Md., and Maxine L. Fogle of Woodsboro; five sons, Max A. Fogle of Hagerstown, Marlin R. Fogle of Rocky Ridge, Md., Walter J. Fogle of Emmitsburg, Md., Allen L. Fogle and Donald W. Fogle, both of Woodsboro; one brother, Paul Leon Wolfe of Walkersville, Md.; 10 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

She was preceded in death by one son, Paul James Fogle; and three infant children.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Woodsboro. The Rev. Paul Maxley will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Catherine G. Palmer

BOONSBORO - Catherine Grosh Palmer, 102, a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home, and formerly of Orchard Drive, Boonsboro, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the home.

Born Nov. 7, 1895, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Cyrus Courtney and Louisa Dennis Grosh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert I. Palmer, in 1978.

She and her husband had been superintendents at Washington Monument State Park, near Boonsboro, from 1936 to 1950.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Boonsboro.

She is survived by one daughter, Darce Palmer Easton of Rohrersville; one son, Robert Wayne Palmer of Seabrook, Md.; one sister, Blanche Buharp of Niceville, Fla.; two granddaughters; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Boonsboro Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph I. Donovan III will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Alice R. Potter

Alice Rebecca Potter, 81, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at her home.

Born Dec. 19, 1916, in Monrovia, Md., she was the daughter of the late Maurice M. and Mary C. Krom Mount.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Potter, in 1977.

She is survived by a son, Maurice A. Mount of Hagerstown; two brothers, James W. Mount and Maurice M. Mount, both of Mount Airy, Md.; and one grandson.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Charles T. Smith Jr.

THURMONT, Md. - Charles Thomas "Tom" Smith Jr., 56, of Thurmont, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born May 13, 1941, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Charles Thomas and Alice Rosalie Batt Smith Sr.

He was owner and operator of Ridge Electrical Systems Inc. of Frederick for more than 30 years.

He was a charter member and elder of Redeeming Love Christian Fellowship of Frederick; and an affiliate member of Eylers Valley Chapel, Thurmont.

He was a board member of Associated Builders and Contractors Association, Frederick.

He is survived by his wife, of 20 years, Anna Maria Phelps Smith; four children, William Clarence Smith of Tipton, Okla., Lucinda Mae Smith of New Market, Md., Miranda Anne Smith and Esther Rosalie "Rosie" Smith, both of Thurmont; one sister, Elizabeth Smith of Frederick; three grandchildren; and two aunts.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The Rev. Kenneth C. Hamrick, pastor of Redeeming Love Christian Fellowship and the Rev. Bud Kibbe will officiate. Burial will be private.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends today and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary V. Schnurr

WILLIAMSPORT - Mary "Virginia" Schnurr, 84, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of 11020 Roessner Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 20, 1913, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry B. and Ruth E. Barns Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Schnurr, in 1996.

She retired in 1973 from Western Maryland Railroad after 15 years.

She was a member of Grace Brethren Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of Women's Missionary Group and Keenage Group.

She was co-founder, a charter member and first president of Washington County Human Development Council. She received an award for service to humanity. She was a member of Human Rights and Behavior Management committees; Maryland State Advisory Board for Potomac Center and Victor Cullen Center; and Halfway Fire Department Auxiliary, serving as chaplain.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne T. Kropka of Concord, N.C.; three sons, Robert D. Schnurr of Hagerstown, Randolph D. Schnurr of Indianapolis, and Richard D. Schnurr of Williamsport; five sisters, Helen Mellott and Jean Weaver, both of Hagerstown, Lorraine Troxell of Williamsport, Pat Statler of Hagerstown and Georgeanna Grossnickle of Smithsburg; two brothers, Harry C. "Buck" Martin and Ralph Martin, both of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Martin.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grace Brethren Church, First and Spruce streets. The Rev. Robert L. Dell will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Harry G. Black

THURMONT, Md. - Harry Glenn Black, 76, of 15307 Kelbaugh Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born March 6, 1921, in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Willis Glenn and Maude Catherine Baker Black.

He owned, operated and was founder of Catoctin Mountain Orchard in Thurmont; he started the orchard in 1946.

He was a life member of Weller United Methodist Church, Thurmont.

He was a member of Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey Horticulture Society, and was past president and treasurer for Maryland. He was a member of Dwarf Fruit Tree Association; Maryland Agriculture Commission; and Frederick County Farm Bureau. He was past president of Maryland Roadside Market Association and a past director of Thurmont Co-op.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Irene Hess Black, whom he married Oct. 7, 1944; two children, Patricia B. Runkles and Robert E. Black, both of Thurmont; one sister, Betty Seiss of Thurmont; one brother, E. Lee Black of Thurmont; one great-granddaughter; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey and Son, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.
