Dr. Carol A. Smith

HOUSTON, Texas - A memorial service for Dr. Carol A. Smith, who died Jan. 10, 1998, will be held Friday, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ed Manalis will officiate.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.

Catherine G. Palmer

BOONSBORO - Catherine Grosh Palmer, 102, a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home, and formerly of Orchard Drive, Boonsboro, who died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, also is survived by two grandsons.

Emma R.C. Hoagland

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Emma Ruth Clemmons Hoagland of Brentwood, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Brentwood.

She was a member of Eastern Star and Pack Horse Ford Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She is survived by her husband, Gwynn E. Hoagland of Brentwood; one son, Eric Hoagland of Gladeville, Tenn.; and one granddaughter, Emma Hoagland.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Deanne Hoagland; and one son, Gary Hoagland.

Service and burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

Allen W. Brumbaugh

Allen Wayne Brumbaugh, 79, of 13301 Little Antietam Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 23, 1918, near State Line, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert Newcomer Brumbaugh and Emma Josephine Hays Brumbaugh.

He was a 1938 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He retired from Fairchild in 1987 after more than 40 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II in Europe.

He previously attended Trinity United Church of Christ, State Line, Pa.

He enjoyed farming, gardening and raising goats and cattle.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Mae Cooper, whom he married Jan. 20, 1951; two daughters, Tina Dawn O'Connor of Winston Salem, N.C., and Cheryl Ann Snodderly of Hagerstown; three sisters, Helen Brumbaugh of Arlington, Va., Lorraine Robertson of Panama City, Fla., and Doris Albertina Brumbaugh of Miami; one brother, Richard Brumbaugh of Baltimore; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Grace Conover; and two brothers, Robert Brumbaugh and Thomas Brumbaugh.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastor Bruce Foster will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to First Brethren Church, 110 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Clark F. Fogle

PHOENIX - Clark F. Fogle, 85, of Phoenix, and formerly of Frederick, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Valley of the Sun Rehabilitation in Glendale, Ariz.

Born Oct. 28, 1912, in New Midway, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel and Estella Forney Fogle.

He was employed by Mack Trucks, retiring in 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline L. Fogle; one daughter, Judy E. Sugata of Phoenix; one son, Dennis C. Fogle of Glendale; one brother, Donald P. Fogle of Thurmont, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Friday at 2 p.m. at Rocky Hill Cemetery, Woodsboro, Md.

The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Edwin R. Moats

HANCOCK - Edwin R. Moats, 89, formerly of Slabtown Road, and a resident of Homewood of Williamsport since May 1996, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Homewood.

Born Nov. 12, 1908, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Dallas and Alice McLucas Moats.

He attended a one-room school near Hancock.

He was employed by B&O Railroad in his younger years. From 1942 to 1944, he was employed by the War Department in Alexandria, Va. and then was employed as a mechanic for 33 years by Stewart Motor Co., Washington, D.C. He then opened Moats Grocery Store, Hollow Road, Hancock, for 18 years until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren, Hancock; and a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie Younker Moats, whom he married Nov. 14, 1936; two daughters, Azilee Holland of Hickory, N.C., and Susan Barton of Hancock; two sons, Robert Moats of Lothian, Md., and Ronald Moats of Hancock; one brother, Raymond Moats of Hancock; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Olive Shott, Cora Sosey, Ethel Keefer, Ester Seburn and Della Weller; and six brothers, Lloyd Moats, Roy Moats, Harry Moats, John Moats, Walter Moats and Ira Moats.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren, Hollow Road, Hancock. The Rev. Harry E. Strite will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock; and on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from noon until 9 p.m. today.

Memorial donations may be made to Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren, c/o Wayne Winters, 318 Town Drive, Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Robert E. Armstrong

BOONSBORO - Robert Eugene "Popeye" Armstrong, 64, of 20049 Millpoint Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 25, 1933, in Williamsport, he was the son of Florence A. Palmer Armstrong of Keedysville and the late George Edward Armstrong Jr.

He had retired in 1991 as a truck driver for PIE Trucking Co., Hagerstown.

He was a member of Conococheague Tribe 84 Redmen in Williamsport; Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion in Boonsboro; North American Rod and Gun Club; and the local Teamsters Union.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Patricia M. Hines Armstrong, whom he married June 28, 1958; one daughter, Teresa L. Leizear of Boonsboro; two brothers, George W. Armstrong and Donald L. Armstrong Sr., both of Boonsboro; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Edward J. Wade will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah G. Lindsay

LaVALE, Md. - Sarah G. Lindsay, of Helman Drive, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at her home.

Born in St. James, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Helen Laura Izer Gearhart.

She was employed by W.H. Reisner Manufacturing Co. in Hagerstown as assistant treasurer. She worked for Erickson Tool Co. in Cleveland for 11 years.

She was executive director of Cumberland Chapter of American Red Cross, retiring in 1975 after 19 years. She then logged more than 3,800 hours as a volunteer.

She served two terms on the board of directors of Cumberland chapter of American Red Cross, was board secretary and later chairperson; she helped organize the first high school bloodmobile visit in Allegany County. She organized and was counselor and adviser to the Red Cross Youth Council; was a resource person for the Berkley Project for 10 years, presenting the blood program to children in the fifth and sixth grades; was training officer for the chapter staff and volunteers; was volunteers consultant-generalist for the Pittsburgh Division covering 60 chapters in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

She was a member of Centre Street United Methodist Church, the Esther Circle of United Methodist Women of the church, and was vice president and program chairperson. She served on church committees and was a Sunday school a teacher, education chairperson and superintendent. She was secretary of children's work for the Women Society of Christian Service of the Baltimore Conference for the Cumberland-Hagerstown District.

She was a charter member of and helped organize the LaVale Rescue Squad, the first rescue squad in the Cumberland area. She was a first aid instructor at Washington County Chapter of American Red Cross.

She was a member of the Women's Civic Club of Cumberland, served on committees and was president from 1980 to 1982. She was past president of and served on committees for the Western District, Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a charter member of Re Temple 118 Daughters of the Nile, was the first recorder and later was historian and queen, and was a supreme officer from 1970 to 1972. She served two terms as president of White Rose Circle; was a former member of Lakewood Chapter 509 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Ann Rutledge Chapter 453 Order of the Eastern Star, Lakewood, Ohio.

She was a charter member of Appalachian Health Planning Council; the Health Education Advisory Committee of the Health Planning Council of Appalachia, Md. Inc.; and a charter member of and helped organize the Social Agencies Group in Cumberland.

She was on the County United Way board of directors, worked on campaigns and was a team captain; she served on committees dealing with handicapped employment, commission on the aging, alcoholism and beautification of greater Cumberland.

She was a member of GFWC LaVale Century Club, and was a hostess at the toll house, managed by the Century Club. She was a member of Beta Sigma Sorority, past president of Omicron Chapter and a member of Preceptor Rhoe Chapter. She received the Soroptimist Women of Distinction Award in 1997.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ernest A. Lindsay; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 N. Centre St., Cumberland. The Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna, the Rev. Adam E. Grim and the Rev. Bernadette M. Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery.

Friends will be received at Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friends also may call at the church after 10 a.m. on Friday. Re Temple 118 Daughters of the Nile will hold memorial services at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. today.

Memorial donations may be made to Ali Ghan Shrine Temple Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1416 Cumberland, Md. 21502 or to Centre Street United Methodist Church.

Minnie I. Schaeffer

Minnie Irene Schaeffer, 92, a resident of Colton Villa Nursing Center in Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at the nursing center.

Born June 6, 1905, in Shenandoah, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Lelia Hottinger Frye.

Her husband, Otis O. Schaeffer Sr., preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Hilda Batts of Pennsylvania; and two sons, Otis O. Schaeffer Jr. of Sterling, Va., and Sidney O. Schaeffer of Bridgeport, Ala.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Madeline Hauver and Dorothy Stone; and several sisters and brothers.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Aaron P. Hunt

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Aaron Patrick Hunt, newborn son of Gregory A. and Deborah L. Moore Hunt of Englewood Avenue, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Women and Infants Hospital, Providence, R.I.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Elizabeth M. Hunt; one brother, Nathanael E. Hunt, both of Pawtucket; paternal grandparents, Richard C. and Dolores J. Knight Hunt of Hagerstown; and maternal grandparents, John T. and Jacqueline A. Kessler Moore of Hagerstown.

A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket.

Arrangements are by Lincoln Funeral Home, Lincoln, R.I.

Memorial donations may be made to A Woman's Concern (Pregnancy Support Program), 1876A Dorchester Ave., Boston, Mass. 02124.
