Glessner G. Smith

WILLIAMSPORT - Glessner Grams Smith, 67, of Williamsport, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 5, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Eva V. Grams Smith of Hagerstown, and the late Charles A. Smith.

He was employed by General Motors Corp., retiring in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1590, Williamsport American Legion Post 202, Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, and AARP.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Annette L. Smith of Williamsport; one daughter, Cherie A. Bachtell of Smithsburg; one sister, Janet Robucci of Hagerstown; three brothers, Floyd Smith, Lloyd Smith and Richard Smith, all of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald A. Smith and Ronald Smith.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Mark Sandell will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Irma E. Fearer

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Irma Elizabeth Fearer, 85, of 1000 Bedford St., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born June 29, 1912, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Clayton L. and Alma Neff Zembower.

She was a life member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she was president of Lutheran Church Women and a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a past president of Ladies Auxiliary of the YMCA; a member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; a former hospital volunteer; and a former member of Cumberland Country Club.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, R. Harold Fearer; one son, the Rev. W. Ronald Fearer, of Waynesboro, Pa.; one sister, Helen M. McGraw of Cumberland; one brother, W. Glenn Zembower of Cumberland; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, C. Merle Zembower.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Rev. John J. Duffus will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family received friends Thursday, at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland. Visitation also will be today one hour prior to the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Smallwood and Washington streets, Cumberland, Md. 21502.

Thelma M. Wade

CASCADE - Thelma M. Wade, 69, of Ritchie Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 27, 1928, in Cascade, she was the daughter of the late Norman E. and Virgie M. Cline Wade.

She was employed by Clara Frock in Thurmont, Md., for 30 years.

She is survived by two sisters, Pearl M. Weagley of Sabillasville and Irene J. Wade of Cascade; one brother, Charles J. "Bud" Wade of Cascade; and three nieces.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. Pastor Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Cascade.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred I. Shaffer

MAUGANSVILLE - Mildred Irene Shaffer, 83, of Maugansville, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Minnie A. Fisher May.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles P. Shaffer, in 1984.

She was an employee of Washington County Hospital, retiring in 1972 after 20 years.

She was a member of Salem Reformed Church.

She was a member of Maugansville Senior Citizens; Maugansville Fire Department Women's Auxiliary; and Keenagers.

She is survived by two daughters, Delores A. Rice of Smithsburg and Mary E. Rice of Hagerstown; one son, Edsel G. Shaffer of Fort Washington, Md.; one sister, Helen Barkman of Everett, Pa.; one brother, Robert May of Clearville, Pa.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Clark Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Lena L. Sisk

BOONSBORO - Lena Liza Sisk, 84, of Reeders Memorial Home, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1913, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie Shinendigger Shank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel C. Sisk.

She was formerly employed by Washington County Hospital.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Wolfe and Susie Parker; and two brothers, Samuel Shank and Lennie Shank.

Graveside services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Barbara E. Gift

RIVERSIDE, Conn. - Barbara E. Gift, 71, of 8 Bonwit Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at her home.

Born Aug. 1, 1926, in New Rochell, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Elizabeth Maddock Patroni.

She had been a secretary at Rye New York School District in Rye, N.Y.; and later was employed as a typist for IBM and Fawcett Publications, Greenwich, Conn.

She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Gift; and a brother, Floyd "Bud" Gift of Chambersburg, Pa.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Helen F. Eyler

BOONSBORO - Helen Frances Eyler, 82, of 60 Hill Crest Road, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Fahrney Keedy Home, Boonsboro.

Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Ladiesburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Dixie Leroy and Ida Hope Fike Dern.

She was an employee of OBGYN and Associates retiring in 1977 after 25 years of service.

She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by her husband, Donald William Eyler of Boonsboro; two sons, Donald William Eyler Jr. of Philippi, W.Va. and Phillip Lee Eyler of Kenora, Ontario, Canada; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dean Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont, Md.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fahrney Keedy Home, 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

Isaac P. Cronin

Isaac Paul Cronin, 78, of Lincoln Avenue, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 19, 1919, in Hookstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Aldin Forest and Maude Cline Cronin.

He served 26 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1967.

He was a member of American Legion Post 211, Funkstown.

He is survived by two nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearle Stoltz, Helene Robbins, Amanda Jane Stetson and Dorothy Maude Hinchcliffe; and one brother, Forest Cronin.

Services and burial will held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

Gary W. Grimes

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Gary Wayne Grimes, 36, of 11704 Coppermine Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at a Gaithersburg, Md., construction site.

Born Dec. 22, 1961, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Barbara Lee Frock of Woodsboro, Md.

He was a 1979 graduate of Walkersville High School; and then attended Federick Community College.

He was employed with F.O. Day Construction Co., Rockville, Md., as a surveyor and foreman for 20 years. He and his wife were active locally in business as Coppermine Lawn and Landscape.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, of 12 years, Laura Brezler-Fogle Grimes; two daughters, Sunny Elizabeth Grimes and Annie Noel Grimes, both at home; two sisters, Wanda Stymiest of Detour, Md., and Brenda Brice of Keymar, Md.; four brothers, Clarence Allen Grimes of Gettysburg, Pa., Brian Grimes of Waynesboro, Pa., Amos F. Grimes of Woodsboro, Md. and David L. Grimes of Walkersville, Md.; his uncle and aunt, Sonny and Dottie Hoff, near Union Bridge; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Woodsboro. The Rev. Mark Foucart, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville, will officiate. Burial will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery, Woodsboro.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Sunny and Annie Grimes Trust Fund, c/o Woodsboro Bank, 5 N. Main St., Woodsboro, Md. 21798.

Fred J. Latta Jr.

Fred Junior Latta Jr., 69, of Outer Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Fred J. and Elsie Carpenter Latta Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl L. Garlock Latta, in 1995.

He served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force.

He retired from the Hagerstown Post Office.

He is survived by four sons, Mark Latta, Jeff Latta and Greg Latta, all of Hagerstown, and Larry Latta of New Oxford, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.
