April 12, 2000

G. Neal Chaires, of Queen Anne, died at Memorial Hospital, Easton on Wednesday, April 12, 2000. He was 73.

Born May 31, 1926 in Queen Anne, Md. he was the son of the late John W. and Bertha McNamee Chaires. After graduating from Tri- County High School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Following his release from active duty, he obtained his B.S. degree in Physics from the University of Richmond. From 1962 until his retirement in 1992, he was the co-owner of Chaires Brothers Equipment Company in Queen Anne.

A member of the Hillsboro-Queen Anne United Methodist Church in Hillsboro, he was an at-large member of both the E.E. Streets Memorial Post #5118, VFW and Talbot Post 70, American Legion, both in Easton.

Mr. Chaires is survived by his wife, the former Lea Rosenberger whom he married in 1959; a daughter, Christine C. Oberink and her husband, Harro of Chestertown; two brothers, John J. Chaires of Queen Anne and William F. Chaires of Stevensville and two granddaughters, Sarah and Eliza Oberink. He was pre-deceased by two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 17th, at 11 A.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, April 16th, from 3 - 5 P.M.

Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Md.

April 11, 2000

Winfield Harrison Stinchcomb, of McDaniel, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, on Tuesday, April 11, 2000. He was 75.

Born in Millersville, Md., August 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Rufus Oliver and Rachel Pumphrey Stinchcomb. After attending public school, he farmed with his father until moving to McDaniel in 1951. Here he farmed the Clay Neck and Clay Hill Farms at McDaniel until the time of his death.

A member of Christ Church, St. Michaels, he was also a member of the Easton Elks Lodge #1622, the Miles River Yacht Club; Granite Lodge #177, A.F. & A. M. and the Talbot County Farm Bureau.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Mr. Stinchcomb is survived by his wife, the former Betty Jane Welham whom he married on Oct. 22, 1949; two daughters, Jane Maloney of Cambridge and Jeanine Wagner of Easton; a son, Winfield Oliver Stinchcomb of McDaniel and a granddaughter, Courtney D. Stinchcomb.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 15th at 3 P.M. at Christ Church, St. Michaels.

Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Maryland.

Friends may call at the church on Friday evening from 7 - 8 P.M. and one hour prior to service.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Church, P. O. Box "S", St. Michaels, Md. 21663.

April 10, 2000

Roy Arthur White of Greensboro, MD, formally of Chestertown, MD died on Monday, April 10, 2000 in his home. He was 67.

He was born on October 1, 1932 the son of the late Roy F. and Alice Jarrell White. Mr. White was a lifetime resident of Chestertown, MD, where he worked for the majority of his life with Brooks Mill as a general maintenance contractor /carpenter. Mr. White served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in the late 1950’s. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Mr. White is survived by his sister Frances Marchiano of Melbourne, Florida and several cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 17, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. Relatives and Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Chester Cemetery.

Dawn Marie Killman of Sudlersville, Md., died suddenly at her home on Monday April 10, 2000. She was 18.

Miss Killman was born in Jacksonville, Fla., the daughter of Jane Stryker Killman of Sudlersville, Md. and Lace L. Killman of Richmond, Va. Miss Killman was a senior at Queen Annes Co. High School, Centreville, Md. and was also attending Chesapeake College, Wye Mills Md. Miss Killman worked at the J. & P. Sporting Clays and Lodge near Sudlersville, Md. and enjoyed working the Tournaments especially. Miss Killman enjoyed cats and spending time with her friends. Miss Killman was pursuing a career in Business Administration. She was a member of the Sudlersville Vol. Fire Co. ladies Auxillary.

In addition to her parents Miss Killman is survived by 1 sister Cheryl Lynn Killman and 1 brother Aaron Killman both of Sudlersville, Md. Her Paternal Grandmother Mary C. Stryker of Kennedyville, Md.

A funeral Litergy will be offered at 11am on Saturday April 15th at the St. Dennis Catholic church, Galena, Md. friends and family may call Friday Eve. From 7-9 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md.

With character and grace, on Monday, April 10, our mother and grandmother, Ottilie Rebecca Hunter. Beloved wife of Henry Hunter deceased. Survived by her devoted children Linda and Richard Perrine of Pylesville; Carl and Pat Hunter of Chesapeake, VA; Robert and Laura Hunter of Church Hill; David Hunter of San Bernardino, CA; Carol and Craig Hartson of Westminster; and ten loving grandchildren.

Memorial Service is Wednesday, April 12 at 10:00 AM, Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD., Reverend Herman Lipsius officiating. Interment in Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.

April 9, 2000

Nicholas Sokal, who retired in 1985 after 37 years in the federal service, 20 years of which he was a U.S. District Court Reporter for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, died on Sunday, April 9, 2000. He was 71.

Mr. Sokal was a resident of Kent Island, MD since 1975, having moved there from Cheverly, MD.

He was educated in the public schools of Vintondale, PA. and was a graduate of Cambria Rowe Business College in Johnstown, PA. He began his career in the Federal Government in 1948 as an administrative assistant to the Director of Political Affairs at the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington DC.

He graduated from The Stenotype Institute of Washington DC after changing careers to become a court reporter. He served with the Investigations Division of the Office of the Inspector General, Dept. of the Army and traveled worldwide. In late 1964 he became a conference reporter for the White House and worked in the office of the Press Secretary, Bill Moyers, and traveled with President Lyndon Johnson and the White House Press office. In 1966 Mr. Sokal was appointed as an Official Court Reporter in the U.S. District Court for the D.C. and worked for the Hon. John J. Sirica from 1966 to 1980, during which he reported the famous Water Gate trial. Upon Judge Sirica’s retirement, Mr. Sokal was the Official Reporter for the Hon. Harold Green and was responsible for the supervision of the reporting of the infamous AT&T antitrust case.

Survivors include his wife, The former Lorraine Martin of Nanty Glo, PA, whom he married in 1949; daughters Donna McInturff and Joyce Sokal, and granddaughters Nicole and Stacey McInturff, all of Kent Island.

Mr. Sokal was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and 1952. He was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church and served as head usher and was a certified Lay Speaker.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, April 13, 2000 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in the Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.

April 8, 2000

A Funeral Liturgy for Lourdes Portugal Tyler, of Easton , formerly of Trappe, will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at 1 P.M.

Mrs. Tyler died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Saturday, April 8, 2000. She was 66.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal on February 9, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Pedro Portugal and Doris deLyra Collaso. After graduating from the Colegio do Sagrado Coracao de Jesus in Portugal, she attended a secretarial school before coming to the United States where she attended and graduated from the Mid Wood High School in New York. She then moved back to Portugal where she worked as a secretary to the Shape Mission to Portugal in conjunction with the Military Assistance Advisory Group of Portugal. She returned to the United States where she worked at the Portuguese Tourist Office in New York before returning briefly to Portugal to be married and then returning to the United States to work with the Portuguese Tourist Agency. In August of 1964, she and her family moved to Talbot County where, in later years, she worked as a baby sitter, companion and nanny.

A member of Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church; she was also a member of the Women's Guild of the Church and the AARP.

Her husband, Otis Cranston Tyler, a Maryland State Trooper whom she married in Portugal on August 2, 1963, died in February of 1984.

Mrs. Tyler is survived by a son, Peter Tyler and his wife, Teresa of Salisbury; two daughters, Lt. Maria Wilke, USNR, of Charlotte, NC and Lourdes Massey and her husband, Will of Easton; one sister and two brothers, all of Portugal; six grandchildren, Cranston and Lindsey Tyler, Garrett and Lauren Wilke and Hunter and Tyler Massey and a special young man, Max Fry, to whom she was a nanny for many years.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Monday, April 10th, from 7 - 9 P.M.

Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, MD

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Dorothy M. Mullikin, of Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Saturday, April 8, 2000. She was 89.

Born in Tunis Mills, Easton, on January 13, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Herman F., Sr. and Sarah Marshall Mielke. She grew up at Wye House and attended public school. In August of 1930, she married Ivon Larrimore Mullikin, Sr., a Talbot County farmer. They farmed several farms in Dover Neck for over fifty years before retiring and moving into Easton in 1983 where Mr. Mullikin died in July of 1985. She worked for ten years in the Linen Department of the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

A lifelong resident of Talbot County, she was a member of All Faiths Chapel in Tunis Mills.

Mrs. Mullikin is survived by two sons, William H. Mullikin of Queen Anne and Ivon L. Mullikin, Jr. of Cordova; a brother, Herman F. Mielke Jr. of Easton; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Three sisters, Florence Shortall, Ruth Henderson and Hildea Venables and a granddaughter, Stacey Mullikin, are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Tuesday, April 11th at 11:00 am.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

David Gray Boutte, a resident of Easton since 1995, died on Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the Washington Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was 55.

Born in Kingman, AZ on September 6, 1944, he was the son of Riley Boutte of Los Angeles and Audrey Bowden Boutte of Prescott, AZ. He graduated from California State at Long Beach in 1966 with a B.A. in History. In 1972, he received his J.D. in Law from the University of Southern California where he was editor-in-chief of "The Law Review". He then served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Walter Ely, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1972-73. He next served as the Law Clerk to the Chief Justice Warren Burger, U.S. Supreme Court from 1973-74. In 1974, he took a position as an attorney with O'Melveny & Myers, then headed a task force for the U.S. Department of Defense, Washington, D.C. In 1980, he joined Mobil Corporation in New York and, at the time of his retirement in 1995, was Executive Director of Mobil International.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1969 where he attained the rank of Captain. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action while serving in Vietnam.

Mr. Boutte was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Easton. He was also a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club in Easton, the Order of the Coif, the Washington D.C. Bar Association, the California Bar Association, and the New York Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Country School in Easton, and on the Board of Directors for the Washington Opera in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Caroline Regitko whom he married on June 27, 1981 and three sons, Gray Boutte and Banks Boutte, both of Easton and Ryan Boutte of Los Angeles, CA.

Funeral services will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church, Easton, MD on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday evening from 7-9:00 PM. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Country School, 716 Goldsborough Street, Easton, MD 21601.

John Rossiter of Stevensville, MD died at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD on Saturday, April 8, 2000. He was 64.

Mr. Rossiter was born in Fort Worth, TX on July 1, 1935. The son of the late Francis and Georgia White Rossiter. He attended school in Washington D.C and was a graduate of Bladensburg High School, class of 1955. Following Mr. Rossiters time in the air force, he began an apprentiship with local 602 of Washington D.C and began working as a steamfitter. He was then injured on the job and went on medical disability, prior to retirement in 1984. In 1984 Mr. Rossiter moved to Stevensville, MD were he would reside for 16 years,

In 1960 – 1970, Mr. Rossiter coached Football, Softball, Baseball, and girls Basketball for St. Ambrose in Cheverly, MD where he later became athletic director. He was the assistant coach for Gonzaga College High School football from 1968-1971. From 1972 to 1976 he coached girls basketball at the academy of holly names, where he coached them to a championship season. He was a member of American Legion Post #273 and served on the Bay City Property Owners Association as Vice President and President.

He survived by his fiancé and life companion of 14 years, Rose Johnson of Stevensville, MD, two sons Michael J. Rossiter of Columbia, MD and John D. Rossiter of Silver Spring, MD, one Daughter, Lisa M. Clark of Cheverly, one brother, Leo J. Rossiter of Winchester, VA, as well as four grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 11, 2000. Friends and family may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD on Monday, April 10, 2000 between the hours of 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM.
