John J. Dobbie
Dr. John James Dobbie, 82, of 13219 Hillandale Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport.
Born March 16, 1915, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late Minor and Rosetta Dobbie.
He graduated from West Virginia University and the Medical College of Virginia. He served a three-year residency in orthopedic surgery at Medical College Hospital and Crippled Childrens Hospital in Richmond, Va.
During World War II, he was stationed at hospitals in the European Theater. On his return, he served on the staff at Walter Reed Hospital.
He came to Hagerstown in 1950 and for 10 years was the only orthopedic surgeon practicing in Washington County.
He was a member of American Medical Association; American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery; and former chief of staff at Washington County Hospital. He was a member of Western Maryland Center Foundation and volunteered at the Community Free Clinic.
He was team physician for the football and basketball programs at North Hagerstown High School.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a former senior warden, vestry member and board member of St. John's Shelter for the homeless.
He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club and The Assembly.
He is survived by his wife, Mary S. Dobbie of Hagerstown; one daughter, Jane Stuart Fishman of Columbus, Ohio; one son, John Graham Dobbie of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Owens.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Kenneth J. Dorsch will officiate.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Rondal W. Cash
TULSA, Okla. - Rondal W. Cash, 80, of Tulsa and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa.
Born Aug. 12, 1917, in Covington, Va., he was the son of the late Paul and Ethel Morris Cash.
He was a 1936 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was formerly employed by Fairchild Aircraft.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tulsa.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Cash; two daughters, Linda Ann Eesley of Layton, Utah, and Andrea Mclaughlin of Leeds, Ala.; two sons, Steven Cash of Plano, Texas, and David Cash of Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Hazel Cash of Hagerstown, and Charlotte Stuckey of Nebo, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nephews.
Services and burial will be today in Tulsa.
Walter E. Wiles
SARASOTA, Fla. - Walter Elwood Wiles, 84, formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in Sarasota. He had multiple sclerosis.
He was born in Hagerstown.
He operated several business in Hagerstown until he retired to Florida in 1976.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II in Europe.
He was a member of Disabled Veterans of America, the Paralyzed Veterans of America and Elks Lodge 378.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Wiles of Sarasota; one son, Tony Wiles of Reston, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Waters of Funkstown and Annabelle Dentler of Waynesboro, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St. in Hagerstown.
Nellie V. Rodgers
MAUGANSVILLE - Nellie Virginia Rodgers, 91, of 17915 Garden View Road, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at her home.
Born Aug. 17, 1906, in Greenhill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Kenton and Annie Hull Simmons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl T. Rodgers, in 1979.
She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church; and a former member of Fishersville United Methodist Church in Virginia.
She was a member of Sunshine Heirs Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one daughter, Annie W. Gearhart of Hagerstown; and one granddaughter, Karen M. Gearhart of Hagerstown.
Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro, Va. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Dorothy E. Clayton
Dorothy Elizabeth Clayton, 86, of 11913 Wesley Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 29, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Eva E. Griffith Elias.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Marino, in 1961. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Clayton, in 1994.
She was employed by Moller Organs for 32 years.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
She was a member of Ladies of the Elks, American Legion Dixon Troxell Post 211 Auxiliary; Washington County Hospital Auxiliary; and AARP.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie E. Keller of Middletown, Md.; one sister, Helen Hoffman of Scranton, Pa.; one brother, John Elias of Hagerstown; one stepson, Walter D. Clayton of Baltimore; one grandson; one stepgranddaughter; one stepgrandson; two stepgreat-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Delmar Elias.
There will be no service or viewing.

Zella M. Harne
EUSTIS, Fla. - Zella Mae "Shorty" Harne, 73, of 36130 Citrus Ave., and formerly of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at her home.
Born March 6, 1924, in Fairplay, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Mary Belle Daugherty Houser.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin T. Harne, in 1966.
She retired from Hagerstown Shoe Co.
She was a former member of Salvation Army; Salvation Army Home League; and League of Mercy.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol A. Campbell of Altoona, Fla. and Beverly E. Townsend of Chicago; two sons, Robert E. Harne of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Calvin T.E. Harne Jr. of Altoona; two sisters, Annabelle Smith of Hagerstown and Madeline Smith of Rohrersville; two brothers, Alton Houser and Vernon Houser, both of Boonsboro; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice I. Snook; and three brothers, Samuel L. Brown, James W. Brown and Harold Houser.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

George W. Berger
WILLIAMSPORT - George Washington Berger, 71, of 120 N. Artizan St., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born May 19, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frank Henry and Ethel Irene Rohrer Berger.
He was employed by Hagerstown Lumber Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1987.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren, was on the board of trustees, a past deacon, and taught Sunday school.
He was a member of American Legion Dixon Troxell Post 211, Funkstown; a life member of District 12 Fairplay Ruritan Club; a life member of Fairplay Volunteer Fire Co.; and Washington County Baseball Association, where he was an umpire.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jane Malott Berger; three sons, George A. Berger of Hagerstown, William W. Berger of Montpelier, Va., and Marvin L. Berger of Cumberland, Md.; five sisters, Thelma S. Souders of Boonsboro, Ruth Powell and Eva Kempt, both of Savanna, Ga., Joyce Hessong of Hagerstown and Martha Lewis of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Edward Berger of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin L. Berger; half sisters and half brothers.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. Pastor Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport, with military graveside services by Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion, Hagerstown.
Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Thursday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Irvin C. Shaw
Irvin Charles "Sonny" Shaw, 68, of 18815 Preston Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at his home.
Born Dec. 10, 1929, in Tilghmanton, he was the son of the late Charles Sylvester and Frances Leah Smith Shaw.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He retired from Grove Manufacturing Co. in Pennsylvania. He previously was employed with Breakstone Cheese in Hagerstown, and Williamsport Tannery.
He was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Owls Club of Hagerstown; Red Men, Lodge 84 of Williamsport; and American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.
He is survived by two aunts, Ruth Smith and Della Eury, both of Hagerstown; one uncle, Carl D. Smith of Hagerstown; and a friend, Mildred Fiddler of Hagerstown.
Services will be Friday at 11 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Harold P. Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
