Thomas E. McCardell VI
BETHESDA, Md. - Thomas Edward McCardell VI, 85, of Bethesda, died of pneumonia on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, D.C.
He was born in Hagerstown.
He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. In 1952, he earned a master's degree in economics.
He was a radio coder for the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for Western Maryland Railway, including as superintendent of shops in Union Bridge, Md. He subsequently worked as transportation economist for the Legislative Reference Service of the Library of Congress.
He later was employed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Travel Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he received superior performance recognition. He returned to the Library of Congress as Transportation and Communications Economist for the renamed Congressional Research Service from 1968 until he retired in 1975.
He was an Episcopalian.
He was Washington County's first Eagle Scout.
He was a volunteer for American Red Cross; and for 17 years delivered Meals on Wheels in Montgomery County, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jessie McCardell; two daughters, Nancy Davies and Claire Long, of Bethesda; and a granddaughter.
Lewis H. Stevenson
SMITHSBURG - Lewis H. Stevenson, 82, of Bradbury Avenue, Smithsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at his home.
Born July 29, 1915, near Ringgold, Md., he was the son of the late Herman Stevenson and Etha Hoffman Stevenson Shockey.
He was a 1934 graduate of Waynesboro High School.
He was employed as a locomotive engineer for Western Maryland Railroad; and Chessie System Railroad, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ, where he was an elder, Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. Previously, he was a member of Welty Church of the Brethren, was trustee, deacon, choir member and Sunday school teacher.
He was a member of Smithsburg Historical Society; and AARP.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn M. Green Stevenson; one daughter, P. Ann Bromley of Smithsburg; one son, Robert L. Stevenson of Zullinger, Pa.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lena S. Middour and Verda S. Royer; and one brother, Paul H. Stevenson.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ. Pastor Don Conley and Minister Bryan R. Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, Pa.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Lewis E. Monninger
Lewis Ellsworth Monninger, 70, of 250 N. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 3, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Clayton and Josephine Urilla Sprecher Monninger.
He was employed by Rohr Industries, retiring in 1993.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline M. Monninger; one daughter, Patricia A. Sharrah of Hagerstown; one son, Kevin L. Monninger of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary E. Wetzel of Hagerstown and Ivaline M. Cline of Downsville; one brother, Robert L. Monninger of Hagerstown; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle V. Clopper; and three brothers, Frank E. Monninger, William H. Monninger and Howard L. Monninger.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Rachel E. Black will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Gladys E. Frank
Gladys E. Frank, 87, of Hagerstown, and formerly of 3312 Paine St., Baltimore, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 13, 1910, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Nora Vess Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Frank, in 1967.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley D. Kirby of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Chabolla; and two grandchildren, Karen E. Kirby and Mark R. Kirby.
Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Wendell G. Gross will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
Clara E. Bentzel
Clara Elizabeth Wierman Bentzel, 86, a resident of Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown, and formerly of 25212 Cascade Road, Cascade, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Western Maryland Center.
Born Feb. 14, 1911, in Thurmont, Md., she was the daughter of the late George and Nora Miller Wierman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Bentzel, in 1968. They were married April 19, 1929.
She was employed by Victor Cullen Center in the laundry department.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Sabillasville, Md., and a member of Ladies Guild.
She was a member of Thurmont Chapter AARP; National AARP; and Maryland Classified Employees Association.
She is survived by four sisters, Lelia Fogle and Vada Waterfield, both of Waynesboro, Anna Happel of Baltimore, and Helen Lantz of Lantz, Md.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Ann Harty, in 1997; one sister, Armatha B. Benchoff; and one brother, Leroy A. "Buck" Wierman.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. David E. Denham will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charles McFadden
BALTIMORE - Charles McFadden, 81, of 1821 Kittyhawk Road, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore.
He was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Cecil County, Md.
He was a retired cement contractor.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served during World War II.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by a companion, Alverta Mordan of Baltimore.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Pa. Pastor Dan Porterfield will officiate. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery in Harrisonville, Pa.
Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Carl O. Appel
HANCOCK - Carl O. Appel, 59, of West Main Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 27, 1938, in Little Orleans, Md., he was the son of the late John C. and Malesta H. Martin Appel.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator with Local 37 Operating Engineers, retiring in 1994.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1960.
He attended Martin Methodist Church, Little Orleans.
He was a member of Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, Hancock; a member of Loyal Order of Moose 348 Frostburg, Md.; and a member of Hancock Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Amy J. Boone Appel of Hancock, whom he married Nov. 5, 1958; two daughters, Donna L. Smith and Darcel J. Breeden, both of Hancock; three sons, David C. Appel of Chaneysville, Pa., Anthony W. Appel of Flintstone, Md., and Alan J. Appel of Hancock; three brothers, Robert B. Appel of Frederick, Md., Leo F. Appel of Cumberland, Md., and Paul J. Appel of Creseptown, Md.; two granddaughters; and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by one son, Carl A. Appel; one sister, Mildred Chaney; and two brothers, John W. Appel Sr. and Earl Appel.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Walter Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Piney Plains United Methodist Cemetery, Little Orleans.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Anna M. Troup
Anna Mary Troup, 80, of 810 Woodland Way, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 21, 1917, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Gilson Earl and Evangeline R. Sheely Fuss.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by her husband, Calvin G. Troup; one daughter, Jane Stone of Hagerstown; two sons, Richard G. Troup of Winchester, Va., and William J. Troup of Williamsport; one brother, James Frederick Fuss of Kentucky; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Pentz; and two brothers, William Fuss and Gilson E. Fuss Jr.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
