James J. Martin

TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. - James Junior Martin, 71, of 8705 Old Glasgow Road, and formerly of Havenwood Hill in Smithsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.

Born in Monroe County, Ky., March 18, 1926, he was the son of the late James T. and Bertha Bartley Martin.

He retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Ritchie after 28 1/2 years of service.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Kosair Shrine Club, HAM Henderson Masonic Lodge 5115 F&AM, Bethany Eastern Star, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Jenkins Martin; one daughter, Sandra Kay Gaither of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, David Wayne Martin of Boonsboro and James Michael Martin of Glasglow, Ky.; two sisters, Ruby Ray of Tompkinsville, and Janelle Emmert of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Thomas Rex Martin of Gravico, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

Services were Jan. 10 at Yokley Funeral Home in Tompkinsville. Michael McCarter and Mark Jones officiated. Burial was in Monroe County Memorial Lawn.

Ethel R. Unger

Ethel R. Unger, 89, of 820 Woodland Way, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at her home.

Born June 23, 1908, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Annie Leckron Rohrer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Unger, in 1988.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Florence Anne Lease of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary Shoemaker of Westminster, Md., and Frances Davies of Hagerstown; one brother, Robert H. Rohrer of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Unger, in 1951; a sister, Grace DeForest; and three brothers, Bill Rohrer, Tom Rohrer and Harold Rohrer.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred Harris and the Rev. William Blackwell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring, Md.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Erma V. Rhoderick

FREDERICK, Md. - Erma Virginia Wachter Rhoderick, 99, formerly of 800 Motter Ave.; and a resident of College View Center, Frederick, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at College View Center.

Born Oct. 7, 1898, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Granville and Florence Stup Wachter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Rhoderick Sr., in 1971.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Willing Workers of Rocky Hill; Linganore Grange; and Unionville Homemakers Club.

She is survived by three sons, Charles W. Rhoderick Jr. of Mount Airy, Md., Arthur G. Rhoderick of Hagerstown and Paul E. Rhoderick of Middletown, Md.; four daughters, Dorothy Harbaugh of Woodsboro, Md., Betty Putman of Frederick, Lucille Murphy of Ijamsville and Anna Ruth Kuhn of Middletown; 31 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Harry F. Rhoderick; one daughter, Helen V. Frey; three grandchildren, Sharon Tyson, Carl Harbaugh and Ralph Harbaugh; one sister; and four brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, Coppermine Road, Woodsboro, Md. The Rev. Bruce W. Barth, interim pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Friends also may call Monday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Keymar Lutheran Parish, 13219A Molasses Road, Union Bridge, Md. 21791.

Gene G. Rose

THURMONT, Md. - Gene Gordon Rose, 60, of Graceham Road, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at his home.

Born April 19, 1937, in Elkhorn City, Ky., he was the son of Walter Eugene and Victoria Elizabeth Cooley Rose.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anna Rose; one daughter, August Rose of Thurmont; four sons, Daniel Rose and Douglas Rose, both of Thurmont, Russell Rose of Frederick, Md., and Leonard Rose of Olney, Md.; three sisters, Hattie Anthony of Baltimore, Faye Stanley of Haysi, Va., and Lorne Mullineaux of Columbia, Md.; three brothers, Aubrey Rose and Arvil Rose, both of Virginia, and John Rose of Cumberland, Md.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Baptist Church, 13802 Long Road, Thurmont. Pastor James A. Coblentz will officiate.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1011 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. 21701.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

Veneta V. Lambros

BETHESDA, Md. - Veneta Virginia Lambros, of 5101 River Road, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Kathleen Bowers Lambros.

She graduated from Towson State and received her master's degree from George Washington University.

She taught school in the District of Columbia area for 40 years, retiring from Lafayette Elementary School.

She received the Agnes and Eugene Meyer Award for Excellence in Education.

She was a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Washington, D.C.; and a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

She was past president of Daughters of Penelope, Hermioni Chapter 13.

She is survived by one sister, Phyllis E. Shifler of Boonsboro; nieces and nephews; one great-niece; and a companion, George S. Dravillas of Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy A. Clark.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Joseph Gawlers, Sons Inc., 5130 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.; and Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Marjorie L. Leatherman

WILLIAMSPORT - Marjorie Lee Leatherman, 92, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born Sept. 27, 1905, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh S. and Bessie L. Grove Bender.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Rodney Leatherman, in 1967.

In her early years, she worked on her father's C&O Canal boat. Later in life, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg.

She is survived by three grandsons, Rodney E. Leatherman of Clear Spring, Richard T. Leatherman Jr. of Portland, Ore. and Randal A. Leatherman of Fairplay; one sister, Dorothy Gross of Sharpsburg; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Theodore Leatherman; three sisters, Modessa Eichelberger, Edith McGraw and Ella Bender; and two brothers, Otha Bender and Ray Bender.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Main Street, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 427, Sharpsburg, Md. 21782.

Milton H. Souders

CASCADE - Milton H. "Mick" Souders, 64, of 25211 Elhuff Court, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his home.

Born July 8, 1933, in Ayr Township, Pa. he was the son of the late Earl D. and Edna Pearl Jenkins Souders.

He received his General Equivalency Degree while serving in the military.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the Air Force he became active in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

He worked at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown in the maintenance department. He retired in 1993.

He attended Conococheague Grace Brethren Church, Greencastle.

He was a life member of John M. Carter VFW Post 9862 of Gaithersburg, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Linda A. Sharp Souders, whom he married April 27, 1990; four daughters, Deborah J. Chilcote of Greencastle, Dawn M. Beers of Gilroy, Calif., Diane L. Harris of State Line, Pa. and Lorissa A. Souders of Cascade; four sons, Michael E. Souders of Morrow, Ohio, Martin E. Souders and Mark G. Souders, both of Hagerstown, and Carl G. Souders of Cascade; four sisters, Eva C. Stoner of Greencastle, Myrtle A. Seville of Chambersburg, Mary V. Beeler of Fayetteville, and Helen D. House of Elizabethtown, Pa.; one brother, Joseph L. Souders of Mercersburg, Pa.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; and four brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. Alan N. Clingan will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to VFW National Children's Home, 3573 S. Waverly Road, Eaton Rapids, Mich. 48823; or to one's local VFW post for transmittal to Children's Home.

Marion B. Conn

Marion B. Conn, 86, of 300 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at her home.

Born Aug. 15, 1911, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna McDonald Tawney.

She was a member of Harvest Baptist Church, Hagerstown.

She is survived by her husband, William H. Conn; three daughters, Helen Comeau of Suffield, Conn., Genevieve Rhodes of Waldorf, Md. and Mashia Meyers of Hagerstown; one sister, Dorothy Hayton of North Beach, Md.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and 13 brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. James B. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 30 minutes prior to the services at the funeral home.
