September 25, 1999

Robert Benjamin Vojvoda of St. Michaels, formerly of Riverhead, NY died at the University Hospital, Baltimore on Saturday, September 25, 1999. He was 72.

Born in South Hampton, New York, he was the son of the late Anton F. and Anastasia Rhuby Vojvoda. After graduating from Riverhead High School in 1944 he attended Middleburg College in Mass. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944 until his honorable discharge from the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in January 1946.

While residing in New York, he established Vojvoda Drycleaning Business in Riverhead in 1953 which he operated until being elected to the office of Supervisor for the Town of Riverhead in 1962. He also served on the Board of Supervisors for Suffolk County, New York.

In 1970 Mr. Vojvoda and his family moved to St. Michaels. He joined the local realtor, Earle B. Wood, Jr. in a real estate office in Easton as a salesman. He later obtained his Broker License and established St. Michaels Realty in which he was active until the time of his death.

A member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for St. Michaels Bank for 20 years he also served on the Board of Trustees for the Wildfowl Trust for North America in Grasonville, MD. He was a long time member of Rotary International, a sponsor of Ducks Unlimited Inc. and an avid supporter of the Waterfowl Festival in Easton since its inception.

Mr. Vojvoda is survived by his wife, the former Antoinette K. Penney whom he married November 1960; a son, Robert A. Vojvoda of Charlotte, NC; three daughters, Sylvia Penny of Southold, NY, Ruth Capranica of St. Michaels and Margaret Harrison of Bozman; two sisters, Frances Rogers of Cutchogue, NY and Marion Vojvoda of Riverhead, NY; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Augusta Schoenborn and Ann Herman and a brother, Anton F. Vojvoda.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at 11:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton.

Burial will be at the South Hampton Cemetery, South Hampton, NY at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michaels Volunteer Fire Dept. Rescue Squad, St. Michaels, MD 21663.

September 23, 1999

Dr. Richard Carmichael Tilghman, of Easton and Baltimore died at his home near Easton on Thursday, September 23, 1999. He was 95.

Born in Centreville on August 20, 1904, he was the son of the late Charles Carroll and Helen B. Goldsborough Tilghman. After graduating from Centreville High School in 1921 he attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his A.B. Degree in 1925. He then did graduate work in chemistry before entering in the School of Medicine in 1928 where he earned his M.D. Degree in 1932. He completed his internship and residency in Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He then was a Research Fellow in Medicine in Harvard University, Boston and then served a year as Resident Physcian, Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1937 - 1967 he was in private practice in Internal Medicine in Baltimore. During World War II he served with the Army Medical Corps as a Lt. Col. With the 18th General Hospital (Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Unit) in the South Pacific and in the China -Burma- India Theatres. From April 1945 to February 1946 he was Chief of Medical Services at the Newton D. Baker Military Hospital in Martinsburg, WVA.

Following his release from active duty he returned to his private practice before becoming a full time faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of University Health Services at Johns Hopkins from 1967 until retiring in 1970. During his career he was also associated as a physician with Union Memorial Hospital, Church Home and Hospital, Hospital for Women of Maryland which is now Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital where he was a consultant in cardiology.

Professional society memberships included, American College of Physicians where he was made Fellow in 1942, Master in 1974, served on the Board of Governors from 1951-1960, on the Board of Regents from 1960-1974 and was Secretary-General from 1968-1974. His other professional memberships included Royal College of Physicians of Ireland where he was an Honorary Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine; a member and Past-President of the American Clinical and Climatological Association; a member of the American Medical Association, member and Past- President of Baltimore City Medical Society; a member and Past Vice- President and Council Member of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland; a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins and Surgical Association and a member of the American Osler Society.

A Phi Beta Kappa upon graduation from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine he later received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Johns Hopkins University in 1967, the Heritage Award from Johns Hopkins University in 1974, the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award from the American College of Physicians in 1974, the Medical Alumni Service Award in 1983 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1997, both from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Tilghman was a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association and the Johns Hopkins Roll Call where he was Class Agent from 1948-1958, General Chairman from 1959-1961 and a member of the Council of Chairman since 1959. He was also a member and Past-President of TheTudor and Stuart Club and a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins History Club.

A member of The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore he was also a member of the Society Of the Cincinnati, Sons of the Revolution, Society of the Colonial Wars where he served on the Council and was Chairman of the Membership Committee, Descendants of the Lords of Maryland Manors, Maryland Historical Society, the Queen Annes County Historical Society, the Talbot County Historical Society, the Baltimore County Historical Society where he served on the Board of Directors and was former Vice-President, the Eastern Shore Society, the Society for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities where he served on the Board of Directors, and the American Wing of the Baltimore Museum of Art where he served on the Board of Directors.

He was also a member of the Johns Hopkins Associates, the William Henry Welch Society and had established The Tilghman Traveling Fellowship. The Tilghman Room in the Turner Auditorium in Johns Hopkins University was dedicated in 1969 and a portrait of Dr. Tilghman to hang in that room was presented to the University in 1976.

Socially he was a member of the Elkridge Club, The Hamilton Street Club, The Johns Hopkins Club, The Bachelors Cotillon, The Caduceus Medical Dinner Club, and the Baltimore Monthly Medical Reunion.

Dr. Tilghman had also authored L. O. D., Yes-A History of the 18th General Hospital in World War II.

Dr. Tilghman is survived by his wife, the former Mary Donnell Singer whom he married in 1945; four children, Joanna Lloyd Tilghman of Cambridge, Richard Carmichael Tilghman, Jr. and John Addison Singer Tilghman, both of Baltimore and Helen Tilghman Gordon of Charlottesville, VA and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at 10:00 AM at The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 North Charles Street, Baltimore.

Private burial will be at Wye House Graveyard near Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Fund For Johns Hopkins Medicine, Reed Hall, 1620 McElderry Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.

September 22, 1999

Phyllis C. Yeatman of Easton died at the Hospice House, Easton on Wednesday, September 22, 1999. She was 81.

Born in England January 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Susan Toff Colborne. After attending public school she earned her nursing certificate. In 1944 she married Howard R. Yeatman, Sr., a U.S. serviceman. In 1946 she came to the United States and they made their home in Easton where for 21 years she was manager of the Avalon Theatre. She later worked part time at Hilly's Garden Center.

A member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton, she was also a former member of the Soroptomist Club and a volunteer for the Talbot Hospice Foundation.

Her husband died in November 1982.

Mrs. Yeatman is survived by a son, Howard R. Yeatman, Jr. of Easton; a daughter, Valerie Pelkey of Trappe and two grandsons, Robert D. Yeatman of Whittier, CA and Jason R. Yeatman of Easton.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 1999 at 11:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Ruth May Marshall of Easton, formerly of Wittman died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Wednesday, September 22, 1999. She was 78.

Born in Talbot County on March 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late George K. and Lucy Sewell Harrison. After attending public school she, in 1941, married Julian Richard Marshall, a commercial waterman. They made their home in Wittman where he died in October 1978.

A lifelong resident of Talbot County she was a long time member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wittman where she played the piano and organ for many years. She later shared her music talents with the residents of William Hill Manor and Genesis ElderCare-The Pines in Easton. She had resided at the St. Mark's Ministry for the Aged for the last 17 years.

Mrs. Marshall is survived by a daughter, Faye M. Shannahan of St. Michaels, a sister, Pearl E. Cummings of Wittman; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, September 24, 1999 at 2:00 PM where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Olivet Cemetery, St. Michaels, MD.

September 21, 1999

Ada Louise Clark of Stevensville died at her home on Tuesday, September 21, 1999. She was 66

Born on October 4, 1932 in Stevensville, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Bertha Mae Roe Elburn. She attended school in Stevensville. She married Charles "Teeny" Clark; he predeceased her in 1983. Mrs. Clark worked for Kentmorr Restaurant as a cleaner and later became self-employed cleaning residential homes in the area. She retired in 1991.

Mrs. Clark is survived by one son, Gordon Clark of Stevensville; one daughter, Trina Sinclair of Grasonville; two brothers: John Elburn of Chester and Ralph Elburn of Stevensville; four sisters: Bertha Mae Elburn and Elizabeth Andress, both of Delaware, and Pearl Hope and Evelyn Willhart, both of Centreville; and six grandchildren. One son, Michael Clark, predeceased her in 1998 and one daughter, Wanda Steel, predeceased her in 1992.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 1999 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester. Family and friends may call one hour before the funeral service. Burial is in Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville.

TILGHMAN: Lillian B. Mortimer "Miss Lill" of Tilghman died on Tuesday, September 21, 1999. She was 101.

Born in Tilghman, June 30, 1898, she was the daughter and eldest child of the late John Franklin and Henreitta North Berridge. She attended public school at Bar Neck, Tilghman. On February 15, 1917 she married Lester George Harrison. They made their home in Bar Neck. He died November 18, 1924. They had one daughter, Pauline "Polly" Harrison Covington, she died May 4, 1977. After her husband's death she worked for Harry and Grace Howeth's store and also lived with them until 1929. On January 19, 1929 she married Randolph Burns Mortimer of Neavitt. They made their home in Tilghman. He died April 21, 1967.

She worked for Johnny Hot's store on Avalon for quite a few years and then became a full time homemaker.

She was a life member of St. John's Methodist Church, Tilghman, United Methodist Women, AARP and Senior Citizens of Tilghman. She was also a member of the Tilghman United Methodist Church.

Her life was filled with her family, friends and many hobbies which included bird watching, needlework, riding her bicycle until age 95 and she was an avid gardner. She loved a vegetable garden and always had a yard full of flowers until age 97.

Mrs. Mortimer is survived by a daughter, Edwina M. Murphy and son-in-law, Daniel H. Murphy of Tilghman; one sister, Helen B. Harrison of Easton; a very dear cousin, Lula Mae Weller of Easton and four grandchildren, Danna M. Murden of St. Michaels, Randolph S. Murphy of Tilghman, Richard J. Baynard of Trappe and Shirley M. Morris of Denton; four great-grandchildren and many dear nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, S. Ellis Berridge and John F. Berridge and three sisters, Margaret B. Frampton, Nora B. Harrison and Ella B. Johnson are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at St. Johns Methodist Church, Tilghman on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at 11:00 AM where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at St. Johns Cemetery, Tilghman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ST. Johns Church, P.O. Box 142, Tilghman, MD 21671.

September 19, 1999

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton on Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at 10:00 AM for Helen Rosalie Marth Nordike .

Mrs. Nordike died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Sunday, September 19, 1999. She was 71.

Born November 7, 1927 in Easton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Helen Marth Ewing. After graduating from Easton High School she married Roy D. Nordike on December 21, 1946. A lifelong resident of Easton, she was a devoted wife and mother.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nordike is survived by nine children, Therese Reid of Rhodesdale, Mary Lowery of Tilghman, Jane Pajula of Easton, Kay Wilson of Easton, Carol Chrysovergis of Catonsville, Roy Nordike of Hurlock, Rita Harner of Boonsboro, Joan Dyott of Easton and Joseph Nordike of Hurlock; a sister, Mary Smith of Easton; three brothers, Philip Ewing of Hurlock, Charles Ewing and her twin brother, William Ewing, both of Easton; 28 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday evening from 7-9 with Prayers at 7:30.

ROYAL OAK: A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at ST. Michaels Chapel, St. Michaels, MD on Thursday, September 23, 1999 at 1:00 PM for John Richard Hochreiner of Royal Oak, MD.

Mr. Hochreiner died on Sunday, September 19, 1999 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 83.

Born August 8,1916, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Hans and Johanna Schleck Hochreiner. In 1940 he received a degree from the University of Missouri where he was President of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He then went to work for Standard Oil of Indiana in St. Louis, MO. From 1942-1945 he served in the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. Following his release from active duty he made his home in Gladwynne, PA where he began work as an Industrial Consultant for J.M. Cook and Staff in Philadelphia, PA. He then became the Assistant Vice-President for Campbell Soup Co. in Camden, NJ and later as President of Campbell Soup Co. he was responsible for starting a branch and building a plant in Melbourne, Australia. In 1975 he moved to Royal Oak, MD.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton. He was a member of the U. S. Power Squad, in PA where he was a Past Commander in 1971, the Miles River Power Squadron, the Talbot County Cruising Club, the I.W.L., the Retired Officers Club, the Edge Creek Boat Club, the Poplar Island Yacht Club where he had been a Past Commander in 1996; the E.E. Streets, V.F.W., and the Easton Elks Lodge #1622.

Mr. Hochreiner is survived by his wife, the former Adelaide Seeger whom he married in August 1944; a daughter, Bonnie Lynn Hochreiner of Royal Oak and a son and daughter-in-law, John Charles Hochreiner and Terry Hochreiner, of Easton. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Therasa Doty and a brother, Robert Hochreiner.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Wednesday, September 22, 1999 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM where Prayers will be said at 7:30 PM.

Burial will be at Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.
