Elwood J. Chaney
Elwood Junior "Cowboy" Chaney, 71, of 67 Madison Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Western Maryland Hospital Center.
Born May 12, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Vergie Miller Chaney.
He retired from Ryder Trucking and was previously employed with Potomac Die and Finishing Co. as a truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Chaney; five daughters, Hazel Long, Brenda Chaney and Tyenna Hart, all of Hagerstown, Darleen Renner of Funkstown and Desiree McCarl of Pennsylvania; five sons, Raymond Chaney of West Virginia, Edward Chaney, Gary Chaney, Clifford Chaney and Oscar Chaney, all of Hagerstown; one brother, Joseph L. Chaney of Florida; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Max Chaney and Robert Chaney; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Randall S. Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Bakersville Cemetery in Bakersville, Md.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Shirley M. Knode
Shirley Marie Knode, 62, of 223 Ross St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 19, 1935, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Alston and Bonita Colbert Walls.
Her husband, James Alfred Knode, preceded her in death.
She was an avid bingo player.
She is survived by four daughters, Debra Keyes, Vickie Davis, Donna Potter and Crystal Vance, all of Hagerstown; three sisters, Wilma Smith of Boonsboro, Margaret Sheppard and Betty Barger, all of Hagerstown; one brother, William Walls of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a friend, Ray Shriner.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Lawrence Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Minnie M. Kidwell
BIG POOL - Minnie Mae Kidwell, 102, formerly of 13101 Indian Springs Road, a resident of Clearview Nursing Home in Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 28, 1895, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Lock and Eda Ethel Ridge Smith.
Her husband, Carroll Offuct Kidwell, died in 1982.
She was employed as an operator with C&P Telephone Co., and as a clerk with Garonzic Co. in Hagerstown. She also was a farmer.
She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hancock.
She is survived by one daughter, Theda K. Kieffer of Big Pool; one sister, Emma E. Burger of Hagerstown; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Rosie Mongan, Ora Suder, Lannah McLucas, Beulah Smith and Amy Smith; and four brothers, Edgar Smith, Curtis Smith, Mayette Smith and Elmer Smith.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The Rev. Allen Weatherholt will officiate.
Friends may call Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring.

Loretta M. Sweeney
BOONSBORO - Loretta Mary Sweeney, 91, a resident of Fahrney-Keedy Home, and formerly of Walnut Towers in Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at the home.
Born May 3, 1906, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Houck Irwin.
Her husband, Edward Joseph Sweeney, died in 1965.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Sodality, and Catholic Daughters of America.
She also was a member of Senior Break-Away, a charter member of Young at Heart Rhythm Band, and had volunteered at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown for 14 years.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Sweeney and Robert P. Sweeney, both of Boonsboro; one sister, Margaret Kallas of Arnold, Md.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Edward J. Sweeney Jr.; and one sister, Violet Dornbusch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Main Street, Boonsboro, with the Rev. George A. Limmer as celebrant. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
There will be no viewing; however the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m., at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, where a Christian Prayer Service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m.

F. Helen Hardy
BOONSBORO - Florence Helen Hardy, 75, of 7436 Mountain Laurel Road, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at her home.
Born June 10, 1922, in Hendricks, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ray and Hazel Alice Morrison Goodwin.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by her husband of 18 years, James W. Hardy; three sons, C. Wayne Tucker of Boonsboro, Russell E. Tucker of Simpsonville, Ky., and Gerald E. Tucker of Smithsburg; three stepdaughters, Yvonne E. Wilson of Hagerstown, Treva M. Iferd of Emmitsburg, Md., and Karen M. Leeds of Indiatlantic, Fla.; one stepson, James W. Hardy II of Myersville, Md.; two brothers, Ray Goodwin and Donald Goodwin, both of Winchester, Va.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Blanche Fulk; and one grandson.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Nettie E. Phillips
BOONSBORO - Nettie E. Phillips, 84, of 7836 Abbott Drive, and formerly of 1044 Corbett St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at her home.
Born Jan. 8, 1914, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Howard and Gladys Viola McFerrin Renner.
Her husband, John W. Phillips Sr., died in 1990.
She was a 1931 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God and the Women's Missionary Council.
She is survived by three sons, John W. Phillips Jr. of Boonsboro, David H. Phillips of Hagerstown, and Robert W. Phillips of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her caregiver and daughter-in-law, Jeanie Phillips.
She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Arvel J. Barrett and the Rev. Wesley Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Edward L. Williar
UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Edward Lindsay Williar, 83, formerly of Union Bridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born April 23, 1914, in Mount Airy, Md., he was the son of the late Jacob O. and Bertha Ecker Williar.
He was a graduate of Daleville Academy of Virginia.
He was employed by Southern States, retiring in 1979.
He was mayor of Union Bridge for 33 years.
He was a member of Union Bridge Church of the Brethren for 50 years, and was on the cemetery board and library committee.
He was a past president and member of Union Bridge Lions Club and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones award. He was a past president of Maryland Municipal League; and West Carroll Republican Club. He was a member of Economic Development Commission; Maryland Commission for the New York World's Fair; and Task Force National League of Cities.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene Bowman Williar; one daughter, Judy Stitely of Westminster, Md.; one son, Gilman Williar of Elkton, Fla.; one brother, Alton Williar of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Union Bridge Church of the Brethren. The Rev. James Benedict and the Rev. Louis Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, Linwood, Md. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Union Bridge.

Corena E. Haupt
Corena Emogene Haupt, 59, of 810 Georgia Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1938, in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Leonard Howard and Dolly Myrtle Vance Slater.
She attended Church of Christ, Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth T. Haupt; three daughters, Deborah Elaine Schmidt, Shelby Jean Alter, and Audrey Renee Haupt, all of Hagerstown; one son, Charles William Buffington of Clear Spring; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastor Bryan Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
