Mary E. Koons

Mary Elizabeth Koons, 92, formerly of 217 Longview Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born March 31, 1905, in Stemmers Run, Md., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Elizabeth Bierman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Samuel "Doc" Koons Sr., in 1986.

She assisted her husband at People's Pharmacy in Williamsport.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church, Williamsport.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Genevieve Pearson of Champlin, Minn.; one son, George Koons Jr. of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Friday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Williamsport United Methodist Church, 25 E. Church St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Amanda L. Clapper

Amanda Louise Clapper, 80, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 24, 1917, in Bellwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Abram F. and Verna Lee Myers.

She graduated from Bellwood High School in 1935, and received a bachelor of arts in 1939 from Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. She received a master of English from Shippensburg University in 1966.

She taught English, Latin and French in Claysburg, Pa., and Hollidaysburg, Pa. She taught for 12 years in Pennsylvania, and for 24 years in Maryland. She taught English, speech and drama for 23 years at South Hagerstown High School. She retired July 1, 1979.

She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, the Wesleyan Class, Women's Society Circle 2, and Altar Guild. She had been a member of the choir and was a teacher and member of the worship committee.

She also was a member of Washington County Teachers Association, Maryland Retired Teachers Association, and National Retired Teachers Association. She was editor of the "Report Card" for 12 years. She was chairman of the 40th anniversary celebration for Washington County Teachers Association.

She was chairman of the Research Committee, and a past president of Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Women's Club of Hagerstown, Crossroads Garden Club, and Retired Officer's Wives Club.

She is survived by her husband, Archie D. Clapper, whom she married Dec. 28, 1945; one daughter, Anita C. Heck of Hagerstown; one sister, Rita Cornmesser of Bellwood; and one grandson.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A. Jane Yontz

A. Jane Yontz, 86, of Ravenwood Lutheran Village Nursing Care Center, Hagerstown, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born Jan. 19, 1912, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late Amos K. and Emma J. Lowry Callenberger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce M. Yontz, in 1978.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Vandervort of Las Vegas; four grandsons, Daniel Vandervort of Thailand, Jeffery Vandervort of Delaware, David Vandervort and Stephen Vandervort, both of Hawaii; and one nephew.

Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va., at the convenience of the family.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by Rosedale Funeral Chapel, Martinsburg.

Lee R. Mummert

Lee Raymond Mummert, 75, of 10814 Coffman Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his home.

Born June 3, 1922, in Big Pool, he was the son of the late Irvin M. and Edith M. Forsythe Mummert.

He retired from Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown after 44 years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

He was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, L. Lucille Turner Mummert of Hagerstown; two daughters, Lois A. Martin of Hagerstown, and Tonya K. Alber of Wichita, Kan.; one son, Dwight L. Mummert of Hagerstown; one brother, Guy W. Mummert of Big Pool; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Robert Dell will officiate. Burial will be in Shanktown Cemetery in Big Pool.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m.

Earl J. Ridenour

HANCOCK - Earl Joseph Ridenour, 83, of Hancock, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his home.

Born on Oct. 7, 1914, in Pecktonville, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph and Belle Reed Ridenour.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Ellen Gordon Ridenour, in 1990.

He worked as a laborer with local orchards until his retirement.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by two granddaughters, Menissa Loggins and Nancy Vines, both of Georgia; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Ridenour Brown in 1983; and a grandson, Michael Brown.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Hollow Road, Hancock. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Adult Care Services, Care Provider Fund, 232 Baptist Road, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Joseph W. Jackson

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Joseph William "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, 63, of 3611 Westchester Court, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born May 10, 1934, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Walter A. and Marie S. Hackley Jackson.

He was employed as a maintenance mechanic with PEPCO in Maryland and the District of Columbia area until his retirement. Previously, he was employed with the U.S. Army Map Service in Bethesda, Md.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960.

He volunteered with Middletown Food Bank.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Belland Jackson; one daughter, Lorri M. Enten of Frederick; one son, Thomas W. Jackson of Laytonsville, Md.; and one granddaughter.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Brownsville Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Friends may call Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to Middletown Volunteer Fire Co., Middletown, Md. 21769.

C. Jay Willman Jr.

C. Jay "Skip" Willman Jr., 62, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 4, 1935, in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late C. Jay and Elizabeth Musser Willman.

He was an employee of the Washington County Sheriffs Department Judicial Division, retiring in 1993.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Willman; one daughter, Torrie L. Smith of Hagerstown; one sister, Kate Thomas of Bradenton, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John R. Marsh Cancer Research Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Miriam G. Somerlade

Miriam G. Somerlade, 78, of Clopper Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 21, 1919, in Myersville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Walter Calvin and G. Myrtle Brunner Rowe.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert "Buddy" Somerlade, in 1986.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leitersburg. She was past president of Church Women.

She was past president of Leitersburg Homemakers Club; past president of Leitersburg Senior Citizens; member of Smithsburg Senior Citizens Club; charter member and first president of Ladies Auxiliary of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co.; Hagerstown Chapter 623 AARP; Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 42; Ladies Auxiliary of Elks Lodge 378, both of Hagerstown; member of Advisory Committee for Community on Aging of Washington County; Potomac Towers Tenants Association and Senior Citizens Club; member of Telephone Committee and Christian Women's Club.

She is survived by one son, David W. Somerlade of Hagerstown; one grandson, Jon David Somerlade of Hagerstown; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leitersburg. Pastors Lans Alexis and Sandra Alexis will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
