Margaret K. Bentzel
SABILLASVILLE, Md. - Margaret K. Tressler Bentzel, 87, of 17122 Bentzel Road, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Gettysburg Hospital.
Born Jan. 16, 1911, in Pennersville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William F. and Nora May McClain Tressler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan N. Bentzel, in 1978. They were married Jan. 29, 1930.
She attended Hooverville School, Wayne Heights, Pa.
She was employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill; and later by Victor Cullen, Sabillasville, in the housekeeping department. She retired in 1962.
She was a member of Emmanuel Chapel, Smithsburg.
She was a member of National AARP.
She is survived by three children, W. Eugene Bentzel, Barbara L. Toomey and Phyllis A. Bentzel, all of Sabillasville; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one niece.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie V. Harbaugh and Hazel E. Keepers.
Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Chapel, 12015 Auburn Drive, Smithsburg. Pastor Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Jacob's Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Joseph W. Mathias
Joseph William Mathias, 95, a resident of Ravenwood Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 3, 1902, in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Earnest Linwood and Catherine Nieth Mathias.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Carma Beatrice Kennel Mathias, in 1997.
He graduated from Harrisburg High School.
He was a salesman for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. while living in Lancaster, Pa. He and his wife owned and operated Mathias' Tavern, Waynesboro, from 1945 until they retired in 1969.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.
He is survived by one daughter, JoAnn Hare of Haddonfield, N.J.; one son, Lynn Mathias of Smithsburg; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Salome Runk and Catherine Nieth Layson; two brothers, Charles Lester Mathias and Paul Edward Mathias.
Services will be Tuesday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Lans E. Alexis will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one half hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

C. Joan Rohrer
C. Joan Rohrer, 61, of 11015 Rosewood Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 2, 1936, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late John B.K. and Alma Barnhart Fisher.
She was a 1957 graduate of Washington County Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a registered nurse at Garlock Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown. She was formerly employed at Washington County Hospital and Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel S.J. Rohrer Jr., whom she married Jan. 25, 1958; one daughter, Dianne J. Rohrer of Baltimore; two sons, Daniel S.J. Rohrer III of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and David J. Rohrer of Chewsville; two brothers, Edwin K. Fisher of Fayetteville, Pa., and John M. Fisher of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-granddaughter; two nieces; and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Z. Fisher.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Charles R. Holder will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lester L. Cromer
Lester Leroy Cromer, 81, of 120 W. Magnolia Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 16, 1916, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Christianna E. Bailey Cromer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Mae Cromer, in 1996.
He was employed with Mack Truck Inc., retiring in 1981.
He was a life member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Alsatia Club since 1944; Mack Golden Bulldogs; National Council of Senior Citizens; Antietam Fire Co.; and AARP.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Crider and Suzanne Smith, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Helen Chapman of Hagerstown; one brother, Robert Cromer of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson and the Rev. Marcus Earp will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
R. Natalie Johnston
R. Natalie Johnston, 55, of 13810 Broadfording Church Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 19, 1942, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Rhuey M. Wolf Cromer of Hagerstown and the late H. Earl Cromer.
She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Fred L. Johnston; two daughters, Jennifer L. Johnston and Wendy N. Johnston Shupp, both of Hagerstown; and one brother, Harry A. "John" Cromer of Hagerstown.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson and the Rev. Marcus Earp will officiate.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

John H. Burger
John Henry Burger, 79, of 1201 Carroll Heights Blvd., Hagerstown, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Nursing Home.
Born May 3, 1918, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William and Belle Burger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Elizabeth Burger, in 1987.
He retired from Shenandoah's Pride Diary after 39 years of service.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 694; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 212 of Hagerstown; Red Men Tribe 84 of Williamsport; Sons of the American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42; and Western Enterprise Fire Co.
He is survived by one daughter, Maria Long of Hagerstown; one son, Richard T. Burger of Hagerstown; four sisters, Martha Reeder, Mary Myers, Hazel Bowers and Alice Rowe, all of Hagerstown; one brother, Charles Richard Burger of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and a close friend, Lavinia "Tootie" Bowers of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Lee Burger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward W. Manalis will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Prayers will be recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Benjamin L. DeShong Jr.
BOYDS, Md. - Benjamin Lee DeShong Jr., 34, of Slidell Road, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at his home.
Born Aug. 7, 1963, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of Benjamin Lee DeShong Sr. of Hancock and Judith Appel Kinney of Gaithersburg, Md.
He was a 1982 graduate of Gaithersburg High School.
He had been employed as a carpenter for Reese Construction of Montgomery County, Md.
He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Joyce Embery of Boyds, Tammy Poates of Union Bridge, Md. and Laura Mainhart of Gaithersburg; his grandmother, Susan Agnes Imes of Hagerstown; three nieces and one nephew.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Frank Teeter will officiate. Burial will be in Martin Cemetery, Little Orleans, Md.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from noon to 9 p.m.

R. Natalie Johnston, 55, of 13810 Broadfording Church Road, Hagerstown, who died Thursday, March 5, 1998, is survived by one brother, Harry D. "John" Cromer of Hagerstown.
Clair S. Brinton Jr.
Clair S. Brinton Jr., 74, of 787 Hamilton Blvd., Hagerstown, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home.
Born May 14, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clair S. and Ethel Triplett Brinton Sr.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II.
He was employed by Mack Trucks Inc., retiring in 1986. Earlier, he had been employed by Fairchild Aircraft.
He was a member of New Life Victory Center, Hagerstown; a life member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion; National Police and Fire Fighters Association; Maryland Sheriffs' Institute; and United Auto Workers Union Local 171.
He is survived by his wife, Alverta H. Brinton; one son, Clair S. Brinton III of Hagerstown; one sister, Esther Sessler of South Bend, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. The Rev. Harvey D. Swanger will officiate. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 of the American Legion.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown.
