Robert S. Armstrong

BOONSBORO - Robert S. "Big Jim" "R.S." Armstrong, 66, of 18506 Lappans Road, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at his home.

Born March 8, 1932, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Chitzman and Irene Good Armstrong.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft and Superior Dairy. He also was employed by CSX, retiring in 1994. He then was employed part time by Franco's Cafe and Lounge.

He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

He was a member of VFW 1936, American Legion Williamsport Post 202 and Redmen 84.

He is survived by his wife, Mable R. Kline Armstrong; two daughters, Sharron A. Silvers and Pamela R. Smith, both of Hagerstown; two sons, John R. Armstrong and Mark A. Armstrong, both of Boonsboro; two sisters, Deloris I. Pierce of Fairplay and Patricia L. Mason of Williamsport; one brother, Basil M. Armstrong of Odenton, Md.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Matthew W. Armstrong.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Bill Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Morris Frock Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, 12107 Walnut Point Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Washington County Hospice, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Gladys U. Brane

FARMVILLE, Va. - Gladys U. Brane, 88, a resident of Holly Manor; and formerly of Charles Town, W.Va., died March 17, 1998.

She was born May 5, 1909, in Nashville, Tenn.

She worked for the U.S. Department of the Navy for 42 years as a procurement officer, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Charles Town Baptist Church.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Betty Gibbs of Farmville, Brenda Hopkins of Alexandria, Va., and Brian Brane of Pittsboro, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Clarence Robert Brane.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are by Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

Rose L.G. White

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Rose Louise Gallo White of Little Rock, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 15, 1998.

She was the daughter of the late Rosa Lettiere and Santo F. Gallo Sr.

She received her nursing degree from Monmouth College in New Jersey.

She worked in the burn unit at Monmouth Memorial Hospital. She worked for Dr. E. Margaret Sullivan, and the Washington County Health Department.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

She was a member of Hagerstown Soroptomist Club, Women's Club, Fountain Head Country Club, and was a charter member and former president of Fountain Head Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Raymond T. White; two daughters, Brenda Ray Halversen and Jane Marie White Yocum of Little Rock; three sisters, Esther Riccitelli of Yonkers, N.Y., Theresa Fredericks of Long Island, N.Y., and Genevieve McDermitt of Takoma Park, Md.; and four grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

Arrangements are by Roller-Chenal Funeral Home in Little Rock.

Darl E. Exline

SHARPSBURG - Darl Ekis Exline, 60, of 4542 Harpers Ferry Road, died Monday, March 16, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 18, 1937, in Grafton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Arthur Dequoy and Willa Larue Canfield Exline.

He retired in 1995 after 33 years with Mack Trucks, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg.

He was a member of Hagerstown local of U.A.W.

He is survived by his wife, Doris L. Knode Exline; one daughter, Jacqueline J. Exline-Cline of Hagerstown; one son, Jeffrey D. Exline of Hagerstown; five sisters, Wilda Juanita Exline, Vonda June Stutler and Wyoma Maxine Gerkins, all of Grafton, W.Va., Wanda Jo Stutler of Cumberland, Md., and Idesta Larue Exline of Hagerstown; six brothers, Charles Richard Exline of Grafton, Denzil Mansil Exline of Boonsboro, Scott Arthur Clinton Exline of Hagerstown and David Lewis Exline, Bernard Neal Exline and Thomas Keal Exline, all of Sharpsburg; three grandchildren; 38 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Odell Exline and Emmet Dequoy Exline.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Tilman H. Chaney

Tilman Haston Chaney, 88, a resident of Avalon Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Draper Road, Clear Spring, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at his home.

Born May 10, 1909, in Blairs Valley, Md., he was the son of the late William and Susan Householder Chaney.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora May Robinson Chaney, in 1980.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from M.P. Moller Pipe Organ Co., in Hagerstown.

He was a member of Kaiseyville Church of God.

He is survived by one daughter, Dorothy L. Socks of Clear Spring; two sons, Harry Donald Chaney and Paul A. Chaney, both of Clear Spring; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Bill Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Little Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Frank N. Rosenberry

CLEAR SPRING - Frank "Babe" Newton Rosenberry, 61, of Indian Springs Road, died Monday, March 16, 1998, at the home of his sister-in-law in Clear Spring.

Born Sept. 8, 1936, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late James Frank and Caroline Ruth Suder Rosenberry.

He was a 1955 graduate of Clear Spring High School.

He owned and operated Country Deli on Fairview Mountain near Clear Spring from 1978 through 1994. He previously was employed by Sears and Safeway Foods.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Clear Spring.

He was a member of National Rifle Association, Williamsport Redmen Tribe 84, Izaak Walton League of America, and Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 in Clear Spring.

He supported youth organizations in the Clear Spring area.

He is survived by two sisters, Cora Lee Martin and Joan E. Tucker, both of Clear Spring; four brothers, Donald Lucas and James E. Rosenberry, both of Big Pool, and Nathan Lucas and Theodore P. Rosenberry, both of Clear Spring; fiance, Carole A. McCardell of Williamsport; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John H. Rosenberry.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring. The Rev. Elaine Prince will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery in Big Pool, with military honors conducted by Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, c/o Darlene Semler, 11846 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. 21722; or to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Richard D. Anderson

Richard D. Anderson, 75, of 503 Washington Square, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 1, 1922, he was the son of the late Russell D. and Lottie A. Long Anderson.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe.

Before retiring in 1976, he owned and operated Anderson's Liquor Store at the corner of Washington and Locust streets.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was an usher for 17 years.

He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42; VFW Post 1936, Hagerstown; Eagles Aerie 694; and Western Enterprise Fire Dept.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia M. Randall Anderson; one daughter, Carolyn E. Barkdoll of Hagerstown; four sisters, Romana Moser of Boonsboro, Edna Rohrer of Westminster, Md., and Faybelle Keslinger and Patricia Waters, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Kenneth W. Anderson of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Suzanne L. Jacobs and Theresa M. Anderson; and two brothers, Edwin A. Anderson and Harold J. Anderson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. George Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 42.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Prayers will be offered at 6 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Betty J. Ruffner

Betty Jane King Ruffner, 74, of 17937 Pin Oak Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Quincy Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Lydia A. Monn Strausner.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Melvin E. King, in 1963.

She was a 1943 graduate of Quincy High School, Quincy, Pa.

She retired after 38 years from Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, Pa.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Little Heiskell, Areme Chapter 58, Sharpsburg; Order of the Eastern Star; American Business Women's Association, Conococheague Chapter, Greencastle, Pa.; and a charter member of Lioness Club of Hagerstown.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Ruffner; one son, Michael E. King of Waynesboro; two sisters, Estella Serba of Waynesboro, Va., and Margaret Gardenhour of Waynesboro, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Annie V. Wile; and four brothers, Ray P. Strausner, Ralph J. Strausner, Carl J. Strausner and Clifford P. Strausner.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplin will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown.
