George Norris

George "Rocky" Norris, 65, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 3, 1932, in Neuilly, France, he was the son of the late Whitton E. and Carolyn G. Norris.

He was a graduate of Antioch College in Ohio.

He was on the board of directors of Lycher Inc.

He was a grocery store manager, campaign organizer, teacher and real estate agent.

He was a bronze life master with American Contract Bridge League.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn "Lyn" Norris, whom he married in October 1974; three daughters, Joanna Gorman of Ludlow, Vt., Christina Norris of San Diego, and Mireille Murphy of Indianapolis; two sons, James Murphy of Collingswood, N.J., and Pieter Bickford of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Mary W. Norris of Philadelphia; two brothers, Whitton E. Norris Jr. of Bedford, Mass., and Rollin B. Norris of Detroit; and five grandchildren.

A memorial meeting will be held today at 8 p.m. at Williamsport United Methodist Church, 25 E. Church St., Williamsport.

Memorial donations may be made to Girl's Incorporated of Washington County, 626 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Vernon S. Eichelberger

Vernon Scott Eichelberger, 75, of 437 S. Edgewood Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Harold S. and Rhoda E. Stitley Eichelberger.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in China, Burma and the India Theater.

He was employed with Mack Trucks Inc., retiring in 1985; and previously was employed with Fairchild Aircraft for 21 years.

He taught woodworking at the Boy's Club.

He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, the Comrades Sunday School Class, and was financial secretary for the church since 1969. He served on church committees.

He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42; UAW Local 171; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte I. Shull Eichelberger; two daughters, Patricia E. Young and Susan E. Dattilio, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Carroll L. Eichelberger of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia I. Heiston.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 505 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Jane McGruer

CLEAR SPRING - Jane "Jean" McGruer, 98, of 11437 Boyd Road, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Clearview Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 13, 1899, in Cornwall, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Donald and Margaret Catherine MacDougall Grant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lindsay Franklin McGruer, in 1974.

She was a former school teacher in Cornwall.

She was a former member of Funkstown Homemakers Club.

She was a member of Hagerstown Grace Brethren Church; Friendly Bible Class; a Sunday school teacher; and a vacation Bible school teacher.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Jean Stull of Clear Spring; one granddaughter, Cheryl Anne Cogar of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Allen K. Cogar of Hagerstown and Robert L. Cogar of Williamsport; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Alexander D. Grant Jr.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Brethren Church, First and Spruce streets, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Irina Boitsova

GREENVILLE, Del. - Irina Boitsova, 38, of Greenville, died Monday, March 9, 1998, in Wilmington, Del., as the result of a car accident.

She was born in Ukraine.

She entered Kiev Ballet Academy at age 6 and graduated in 1978.

She was prima ballerina of the Donetsk Ballet from 1978 to 1992.

In 1994, she became ballet master and principal dancer of the 13 member Russian Ballet Theater of Delaware. She resigned but continued to give Delaware performances with the International Ballet Theater.

A member of the International Ballet Theater in Wilmington, a touring company of Russian dancers, she danced the dual roles of the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Potomac Classical Youth Ballet Company's production of "The Nutcracker" at The Maryland Theatre in December.

She first performed in Hagerstown in 1990 with the Donetsk Ballet Co. at The Maryland Theatre. She taught in City Ballet School's summer program in 1991 and 1992 and planned to return this year.

She is survived by her husband, Alexander "Sacha" Boitsova; her parents, Vera and Stepan Matiash of Ukraine; one son, Daniel Boitsova at home; and one brother, Anatoly Nagarniuk of Ukraine.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1406 Philadelphia Pike, Greenville. A Parastas service will be at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Lower Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, near Talleyville, Del.

Memorial donations may be made to Boitsova/IBT, 1282 Presidential Drive, Greenville, Del. 19807.

Nancy H. M. Turnbull

SMITHSBURG - Nancy H.M. "Biddy" Turnbull, 81, of Smithsburg, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

She was born May 23, 1916, in Tynemouth, England.

She received her master's degree, with honors, from Durham University in England.

After 40 years as a teacher, she retired in 1979. Her teaching career consisted of 21 years in England, with several years as an evacuee in a farm house during the war. Later, she received teaching awards in Australia and New Zealand.

In the 1960s she was offered a teaching position in Washington County. For 17 years she taught social studies at North Potomac Junior High; interspersing her classroom teaching with programs on local educational television.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church, where she sang in the choir for nine years.

She was a member of the local and national branches of the Retired Teachers Association; AARP; Catholic Daughters of America; Catholic Golden Age; RSVP, where she contributed many volunteer hours; and American Diabetes Association.

She is survived by nieces Jane Boyd and Anne Moir; nephews John Turnbull and Andrew Turnbull; and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Hagerstown. Monsignor Robert Passarelli and the Rev. George Limmer will be celebrants.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's School, 218 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Diabetes Association, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Carol A. Himes

SMITHSBURG - Carol A. Himes, 53, of Smithsburg, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at her home.

Born in Smithsburg, Aug. 7, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Helen V. Pryor Pepple.

She attended Smithsburg High School.

She was co-owner of H.H. Printing in Smithsburg, and was formerly employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill and Hagerstown Bookbinding Co.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Smithsburg.

She was a member of the ladies' auxiliary of Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association.

She is survived by her husband, Howard W. "Bill" Himes; two daughters, Jackie L. Rice of Waldorf, Md., and Billie Jo Himes of Smithsburg; one son, Jim W. Himes, at home; one sister, A. Virginia Bowman of Smithsburg; four brothers, Raymond E. "Buddy" Pepple of Smithsburg, Larry E. Pepple, John R. Pepple, and William L. Pepple all of Hagerstown; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Rice and Emily Rice.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Lee Himes.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m., at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Pat Malone will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Royce W. Hawley

ANNAPOLIS - Royce Wood Hawley, 91, of Annapolis and formerly of Asbury Park, N.J., died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis.

Born Sept. 18, 1906, in Churchville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Phineas R. and Frances Wood Hawley.

He was a graduate of Atlantic City High School, Atlantic City, N.J.; and attended Lackawana College, Scranton, Pa., where he studied business and music.

He was commissioned in 1929 from the Salvation Army Officers Training College, New York. He was appointed to the corps at Reading, Pa. He was the corps officer at Pen Argyl and Philadelphia West, both of Pennsylvania; Albany, N.Y.; Columbus (Pontiac) Ohio; Utica, N.Y., and Syracuse, N.Y. He was assistant territorial social welfare secretary, New York City; and social welfare secretary of the Southwest Ohio Division and territorial social welfare and correctional services secretary in New York City. He had served as Salvation Army Captain in Chambersburg, Pa.

He retired as an officer/clergy of the Salvation Army.

He was a charter member of National Association of Social Workers; a member of the board of directors of American Camping Association; president of Ministerial Association, Columbus, Ohio; a former Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America; member of Territorial Historical Commission; and volunteered at Children's Camps and area prisons.

He started Handicapped Camps and Senior Citizens Camps in Jefferson Park, N.Y. He was a Paul Harris Fellow; a Rotarian for 30 years; a member of Lions Club; former chaplain of Asbury Park, N.J., Rotary Club and chairman of the music committee.

He was a registered practitioner for the Internal Revenue Service. He also was a registered realtor in New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife, Elzin E. Henry Hawley, whom he married in January 1931; one daughter, Faith Howarth of Annapolis; one son, R. Dean Hawley of Tamarac, Fla.; one sister, Mary Nolan of Okracoke, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Salvation Army Headquarters, 159 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, Pa. Lt. Col. Paul D. Seiler will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.

Visitation was Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, Annapolis; and will be Sunday from 2 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the services at Salvation Army headquarters.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

William K. Buchanan

HALFWAY - William K. Buchanan, 88, of Halfway, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at his home.

Born May 14, 1909, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late John and Eva Gertrude Ditlow Buchanan.

He graduated from Williamsport High School and attended University of Maryland.

He served as a first sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II with Gen. Patton's Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.

He attended First Baptist Church in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Louise Tracy Buchanan of Hagerstown; one daughter, Rebecca Lee Melody of Hagerstown; one son, William Norris Buchanan of Cumberland, Md.; three grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Eddie Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 15 High St., Hagerstown, Md 21740.
