Ruth G. Younkins

FREDERICK, Md. - Ruth Gaylor Ausherman Younkins, 89, formerly of Middletown, Md., died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Homewood Retirement Center, Frederick.

Born July 15, 1908, in Frederick County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Alice Gaylor Ausherman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper P. Younkins, in 1962.

She was a cafeteria worker with the Frederick County schools until her retirement.

She was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann E. Martin of Frederick; one sister, Louella Rinker; one granddaughter; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Reformed Church. The Rev. Mark A. Wakefield will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Valley Bible Church Cemetery, Middletown.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The funeral home will be open all day Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Reformed Church, P.O. Box 333, Middletown, Md. 21769, or to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21702-0799.

James R. Light

James R. Light, 63, of 11 Madison Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.

Born July 10, 1934, in Timberville, Va., he was the son of the late Charles E. and Minnie F. Orbaugh Light.

He was employed with Brandt Cabinet Works.

He is survived by two sisters, Arlene M. Flora and Ada Mae Anderson, both of Hagerstown; and one brother, Donnie E. Light of Hagerstown.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Bill L. Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport.

Richard W. Schaff

Richard W. Schaff, 66, of 10903 Knotty Pine Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, in Pittsburgh.

Born June 9, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Lorraine S. and Teressa Condon Schaff.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as an engineer in Merrifield, Va.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42; and Knights of Columbus Thomas Pangborn Lodge 1365.

He is survived by his wife, Joan C. Ringer Schaff; one son, Dana J. Schaff of Hagerstown; one brother, Gene B. Schaff of Hagerstown; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. George Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Harry M. Ganoe

Harry Melvin "Bud" Ganoe, 87, of 111 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Citizens Memorial Nursing Home, Frederick, Md.

Born Jan. 24, 1911, in Romney, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Ida Hannis Ganoe.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary G. Mullenix Ganoe, in 1965.

He began his employment with Fairchild Aircraft in 1941, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of Moose Club and Eagles of Hagerstown.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Lee O'Neill of Brunswick, Md.; two sons, Charles A. Ganoe of Boonsboro and Cecil M. Ganoe of St. Thomas, Pa.; one sister, Margaret Davis of Romney; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a companion, Jeanette Houghton of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by one sister; two brothers; and a great-grandson.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, 5 Public Square, Suite 307, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Beatrice I. Ingram

SHARPSBURG - Beatrice Irene Myers Ingram, 70, of 3622 Harpers Ferry Road, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1927, in Antietam Furnace, Md., she was the daughter of the late Samuel K. Myers and Lillie McCoy Marshall.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Luther "Garold" Ingram, in 1995.

She was a homemaker. She retired as a seamstress after 28 years with La'iglon Sewing Factory and R&J Sportswear.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by one son, David L. "Terry" Ingram of Sharpsburg; two sisters, Frances Tenant of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Phyllis L. Knight of Hagerstown; one brother, W. Leroy Marshall of Sharpsburg; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Louise Martin and S. Jean Hammersia; and one brother, Charles Kenneth "Tunnie" Myers.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Samples Manor Cemetery, Harpers Ferry Road, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Ernest Witmer and Terry Eugene Marshall will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Md. 21713, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary R. Betts

Mary Ruth Betts, 94, of 13616 Paradise Church Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Ravenwood Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 19, 1903, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Lee and Mary Cornelia Rummel Ashbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles E. Sweigert, in 1945. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Gorman B. Betts, in 1987.

She was employed by Hagerstown Rubber Co., retiring after 28 years.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Ruth Cochran of Brennhan, Texas, Hazel Lehman and Dorothy Walters, both of Hagerstown, and Jane Young of Hilton Head, S.C.; two brothers, Dale Myers of Greencastle, Pa., and Guy Myers of Hagerstown; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Charles E. Sweigert and Donald Lee Sweigert.

Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Frances M. Newcomer

Frances M. Newcomer, 89, of 245 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born June 5, 1908, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Stephen G. and Lottie M. Potts Berger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Newcomer.

She was a 1926 graduate of Washington County High School.

She retired as secretary to the vice president of Operating and Engineering at Potomac Edison Co.

She was a life member of Christ's Reformed Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher of the Rebekah Class for 50 years.

She was a member of Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; Republican Club; Washington County Horticultural Society; Community Concert Association; Maryland Symphony Orchestra; Women's Club; Crossroad's Garden Club; a charter member of Maryland Appalachian Trail Club; and Business and Professional Women's Club.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Benevola Church Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Catherine M. Sagi

Catherine Myrtle Sagi, 68, of 17316 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at her home.

Born Nov. 25, 1929, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Roy W. Harrison and Mary A. Jones Harrison Schildtknecht. She was the stepdaughter of Edith C. Harrison of Hagerstown.

Her husband, Paul Sagi Jr., died in 1996.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Carbaugh and Deborah Ehmer, both of Hagerstown; three stepdaughters, Cathy Lutz of Hagerstown, Vicki Hastings of Maugansville, and Sue Miller of New Market, Md.; three sons, Lee Guessford Jr., Kenneth Guessford and Richard "Bill" Burker, all of Hagerstown; and one stepson; Steve Sagi, of Hagerstown; two sisters, Pat Beall of Frederick, Md., and Joyce Shumaker of Hagerstown; two brothers, Bob Harrison of Winchester, Va., and Charles Schildtknecht of Frederick; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Leroy Harrison.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Byrl Shaver and the Rev. John Mowen will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to John R. Marsh Cancer Research Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Carmen E. Garnand

CLEAR SPRING - Carmen Ercill Garnand, 95, formerly of North Mill Street and a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the home.

Born July 20, 1902 in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Laura Belle Tedrick Widmyer and George Luther Wesley Widmyer.

She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and Shepherd College.

She taught school in Washington County for more than 40 years. She was principal of Pinesburg School.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Clear Spring and served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 60 years.

She also was a member of AARP.

She is the last of her immediate family, and is survived by one niece, Pauline Miller of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and her caretaker, Chester Reiff of Clear Spring.

She was preceded in death by one son, Harry F. Garnand Jr.; one sister, A. Ethel Widmyer; and one brother, G. Foster Widmyer.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring. The Rev. Terry Foor will officiate. Burial will be in Little Rose Hill Cemetery in Clear Spring.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Clear Spring Ambulance Club, P.O. Box 61, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.
