May 11, 2000

Alverta W. Kilbourn, of Neavitt, died at the Memorial Hospital At Easton, Maryland on Thursday May 11, 2000, She was 97.

Born in Harrison, Arkansas, July 25,1902, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Rebecca Shipman Wallace. After graduating from high school and attending the University of Arkansas, she taught school until her marriage in June 1924 to Garland Rex Kilbourn. They made their home in Marion, Ohio until 1966, when he retired and they moved to Neavitt.

A member of the Presbyterian Church of Easton, she was also a member of the St. Michaels Womens Club and a volunteer for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Mr. Kilbourn died in September of 1992.

Surviving are a son, G. Rex Kilbourn, Jr. of Neavitt; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great- great grandson.

Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Easton.

Interment will be private.

May 10, 2000

Janice Marie Foster of Centreville, MD. died Wednesday May 10, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 56.

Born on March 20, 1944 in Federalsburg, MD. She was the daughter of the late Vincent & Lillian Christopher Towers. She attended school in Cordova & Easton, MD. Married Glenn M. Foster of Starr, MD. on May 20, 1962. They resided in Starr, Wye Mills and later in Centreville. Mrs. Foster worked for Nelson Packaged Goods in Centreville, MD. as a Lottery Clerk for many years. She was a member of Wye Mills United Methodist Church in Wye Mills, MD.

She is survived by her husband Glenn M. Foster of Centreville, MD. three (3) sons Glenn M. Foster, Jr. of Wittman, MD. Troy V. Foster of Centreville, MD. & Vincent C. Foster of Easton, MD. Sister Regina Fitzhugh of Denton, MD. Stepfather Crawford Dulin of Wye Mills, MD. and 14 Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 13, 2000 11am at the Wye Mills United Methodist Church in Wye Mills, MD. Family and Friends may call on Friday May 12, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. from 7PM to 9PM. Interment will be in Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD.

Matilda L. Francis of Easton, formerly of East Norwich, New York died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, Maryland on Wednesday May 10th. She was 91.

Born on October 12, 1908 she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Lehmann. After attending school in Queens, NY She later attended Business school for two years, and on April 5, 1930 she married Lucien Girard Jr. they made their home in East Norwich New York. Mr. Girard died in 1972.

In 1974 she married Russell Francis. He died in 1980. She remained in East Norwich until 1999 when she moved to Easton.

She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of East Norwich, and also a member of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Francis is survived by a son: Lucien Girard III of Royal Oak, Maryland and two grandsons: Peter Girard of Littleton, CO. and Matthew Girard of Philadelphia, PA..

A Memorial service will be held at the Community United Methodist Church, East Norwich New York, on Sunday, June 11, 2000 at 3:00pm.

Burial will be private.

May 9, 2000

Marie Audrey Hicks, 61 years of age, of Dover, Delaware, formally of Millington, Maryland died suddenly at her residence on Tuesday, May 9th.

Born in Chestertown Maryland she was the daughter of the late Emery & Myrtle [Camile] Martin. Living in Millington, she spent all of her formative years in the Millington, Kent County area. She attended Kennard High School, Centreville, Maryland. During her working career, the Playtex Apparel Company in Dover, Delaware had employed her. She retired in 1997

Ms. Hicks was extremely active in the 1st Baptist Church having held such offices as treasurer, and Secretary and additionally served on a number of other church committees and boards.

She was very family orientated, loved to cook, and particularly loved being with her children and grandchildren. She was also concerned with the welfare of people in her community as she was always lending a helping hand to those who were in need.

Two daughters, Norarene E. Hicks, survive Ms. Hicks of Millington, Maryland, Audrey D. Camile, Golts, Maryland, two sons, Julius L. Hicks of Dover, De, and Albert D. Camile of Cheswold, De. 3 grand children, 1 great grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 13th at 1 PM from the 1st Baptist Church of Cheswold, Cheswold, De. There will be a viewing from 11 AM – 1 PM. Interment will follow the funeral in the John Wesley Cemetery, Millington, Maryland.

May 8, 2000

Daniel Thomas Stein, 78 Years of Age of Newark, Delaware formally of Tolchester, Kent County, Maryland died on Monday, May 8, 2000 at the Christiana Health Care Services in Newark, Delaware as a result of heart failure.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa, he was the son of the late Newton & Florence [Hunt] Stein. He spent most of his formative years in Philadelphia. During World War II he served his country in the United States Army and at the conclusion of the war he was honorably discharged.

He went to work for W.B. Saunders a printing company in New Jersey where he served as a handyman. For a number of years and retired in 1990. He and his wife visited Maryland’s Eastern Shore and bought a home. They spent their spare time here and upon retirement they established permanent residence in Tolchester. 3 years ago they moved to Newark, Delaware. In his spare time he loved to fish and crab.

His wife of 34 years Madeline Stein of Newark, De, 2 sisters, Mary Plipzeck of Philadelphia, Pa, Gertrude O’Toole of Galena, Maryland, and a brother Elwood Stein of Texas as well as a host of nieces and nephews survive Mr. Stein.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 13th a 1 PM from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. A viewing will be held from 12 noon till service time. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Chestertown, Md.

May 6, 2000

Dr. J. Duer Moores of Easton, formerly of Baltimore died at William Hill Manor on Saturday May 6, 2000. He was 94.

Born March 4, 1906 he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Edna Stanley Moores. After graduating from Baltimore City College High School in 1923 he attended The Johns Hopkins University where he earned an undergraduate Degree in 1931 and later received his Medical Degree in 1932 from the University of Maryland Medical School. Dr. Moores' residency was at Franklin Square Hospital. He then established a private practice in Baltimore from which he retired in the late 1970's and in 1982 he moved to Talbot County.

Her was a member of Trinity Cathedral, Easton.

Dr. Moores is survived by a son, John D. Moores Jr. of Morristown, NJ; tow grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home P.A., Easton on Tuesday May 9th at 4:00pm where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Easton, Md.

Elsie Mae Thomas of Chester, Md. died Saturday, May 6,2000 at Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville, Md. She was 82.

Born on May 30,1917 in Paukitonia, Pa. the daughter of the late Clinton Petigrow and Viola Rose Conrath. She is the wife of the late Martin Herbert Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was a long time resident of Kent Island, over 50 years. She was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church. Mrs. Thomas was a Homemaker and in her free time enjoyed reading and talking with her friends. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, sister and Aunt.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her sister, Mabel Skillon of Indiana, Pa. and 2 nephews; Raymond Thomas of Chester, Md. and Donald Skillen .

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 9,2000 at 11:00 AM. At Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, Md. Family and Friends may call 1 hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday. Following the services the Interment will be at Stevensville Cemetery.

May 4, 2000

Viola Skipper Cole of Easton died on Thursday, May 4, 2000 at the Shore Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Denton.

Born in the Trappe District, she was the only daughter of William Morris and Nettie Carroll Skipper. Her husband, Harvey J. Cole, a retired Navy officer, died September 5, 1983. She graduated from Trappe High School and also attended Washington Business College in Washington, D.C. She was employed by Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington, D.C. in the payroll department for many years before returning to live on the Eastern Shore.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 243 Women’s Auxiliary in Hurlock, and of the AARP, both national and district.

Mrs. Cole is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Upper Bambury Cemetery in Trappe on Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at 11:00 AM

May 3, 2000

Davis Carlisle Burroughs of Pittsburgh, PA died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 80.

Born in Duquesne, PA on January 16, 1920, he was the son of the late Davis C., Sr. and Nancy Suppes Burroughs.

Survived by his wife, Margaret Donahoe Burroughs, of Pittsburgh.

Graveside services will be held at the Old Wye Church Cemetery in Wye Mills, MD on Monday, May 8, 2000 at 10:00 AM.

Eva Elizabeth Stephens of Stevensville, MD died at Corsica Hills Nursing Center on Wednesday, May 3, 2000.

She was 94.Born in Dominion (Chester), MD on August 27, 1905 the daughter of Robert E. and Clara Jones Lee. Mrs. Stephens attended school in Chester. At the age of 15, she moved to Thurmont, MD for one year and then returned home. She moved to Crownsville when she was 17, where she met and later married her husband, Joseph B. Stephens. In 1936, they moved to Reisterstown where they opened an antique shop, which today is part of Antique Row. After her husband died in 1981, she returned to Chester.

Mrs. Stephens attended Queen Anne’s County Adult Day Care and Seniors Center in Centreville and Grasonville, MD.

Mrs. Stephens is survived by: two sons, Joseph B. Stephens Jr. of Westminster, MD and Edward Franklin Stephens Sr. of Conowingo, MD; one daughter, Mary Geraldine (Jerry) Rhoten of Stevensville; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Predeceasing Mrs. Stephens are three sisters: Reba Rada, Dorothy Baxter and Mae Maise; and one brother, Lester Lee.

A Graveside Service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Baltimore, MD on Friday, May 5, 2000 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, Kent County, 711 Washington Ave. #29-174 Chestertown, MD 21620.

Joseph “Joe” Lee Benson of Stevensville, MD. died Wednesday May 3rd, 2000 at his home. He was 47.

Born on March 11, 1953 in Ft. George G. Meade, MD. the son of Frank Richard Benson and the late Pearl Lillian Smith Engelhaupt. He attended school in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Benson came to the Eastern Shore and began working for United Shellfish in Grasonville, MD. He was later employed by JB Heating & Cooling as a Mechanic and for Snow Valley as a salesman. And then returning to JB Heating & Cooling until becoming disabled early this year. Joe was an avid sportsman with hunting and fishing.

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife Terry Benson of Stevensville, his father Frank R. Benson, Sr. of CO. his stepfather Charles Engelhaupt of Baltimore, MD., two daughters Sheila Marie Shipley and her husband Christian Shawn of Stevensville, MD. and Tina Michele Benson of Chester, MD. two brothers Frank R. Benson, Jr. of Baltimore and William Benson of Westminster, MD. one sister Delores Cross of Glen Burine a sister – in –law Joyce H. Scrivens of Stevensville, MD. six grandchildren Katlyn Marie Volker, Joseph Christian Shipley, Kirsten Mae Shipley, Jonathan Lee Shipley, Alexis Nicole and Nathan Andrew.

Funeral services will be held 2PM on Friday May 5, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Where family and friends may call one hour before on Friday and on Thursday from 3PM to 5PM and 7PM to 9PM. Interunment will be private. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Allfirst Bank c/o Mrs. Shipley P.O. Box 512 Chester, MD. 21619.
