June 28, 2000

Elton Charles Irwin of Stevensville, MD. died Wednesday June 28, 2000 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. He was 84.

Born on April 15, 1916 in Rileyville, PA. he was the son of the late Charles and Hazel Hopkins Irwin. Mr. Irwin was a 1934 graduate of Honesdale High School in Honesdale, PA. He began working as a welder in Pennsylvania. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marines and served during WWII. On May 19, 1944 He married Edna Earle Bennett. After begin honorably discharged he returned to Honesdale, PA. and began a career with Tobyhanna Army Depot in Tobyhanna, PA.As a sheet metal worker. Mr. Irwin retired in Sept of 1978.

Upon retirement they moved to Stevensville, MD. Mr. Irwin was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale, PA. Where he was an Elder. He later became a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. Where he was active in the men’s breakfast, a member of the Island Idlers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (N.A.R.F.E). and A.A.R.P.

Mr. Irwin is survived by a daughter Kaye C. Dutrow of Queenstown, MD. A brother Ray W. Irwin of Havertown, PA. A sister Lillian Noble of Groton, N.Y. and a granddaughter Sherry Dutrow. Mr. Irwin was predeceased by his wife Edna E. Irwin on July 29, 1993, a son Charles D. Irwin in 1948, a brother Donald J. Irwin during WWII and a sister Marguerite Olver in 1993.

A private interment will be held in Glenn Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale, PA. A memorial service will be held 11AM on July 6th , 2000 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Kent Island United Methodist Church P.O. Box 308 Chester, MD. 21619 or to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc. 300 Del Rhodes Ave. Queenstown, MD. 21658.

James Earle Jarrell of Preston, Md. died on June 28, 2000 at Baltimore Rehabilitation and Extended Care Veterans Facility in Baltimore, Maryland. He was 72.

Born on September 6, 1927 in Price, Maryland, he was the son of the late Herbert Todd and Martha Meredith Jarrell. He began his lifelong passion in Agriculture at a young age as a hand on his families and neighboring farms. In 1946 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Japan during World War II. Mr. Jarrell was honorably discharged in 1948. Returning to Kent County, Maryland he worked for Wm. Cooper & Son as a mechanic and then later for Kerr-McGee Fertilizer in Centreville, Md. Mr. Jarrell continued his career in agriculture working in many capacities in the different communities in which he resided. Over the course of his life he resided in Queen Anne’s, Kent, Talbot, and finally Caroline County, where he has lived for the past 10 years. He will be remembered by many Caroline County farmers for his willingness and ability to help on various farms.

Mr. Jarrell was a past commander of the Millington VFW Post #652 and Caroline VFW Post # 7937. His true love was lending a helping hand, farming, and boating.

He is survived by 2 sons: James E. Jarrell and Robert R. Jarrell of Maryland, 2 brothers: R. Melvin Jarrell of Cross Junction, Va. and Clifton B. Jarrell of St. Cloud, Florida, 4 sisters: Daisey E. Dill of Smyrna, Delaware, Doris Fox Coleman of Chestertown, Md., Betty Jean Allen of Ingleside, Maryland, and Phyliss A. Andrew of Ridgley, Maryland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a special friend: Carol Shaw.

Funeral services will be held on Monday July 3, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Maryland, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock, Maryland. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Caroline VFW Post #7937 P.O. Box 51 Greensboro, Maryland 21639.

June 27, 2000

Ludwig Hedderich of Denton, formerly of Ridgely, died at the Caroline Nursing Home in Denton on Tuesday, June 27, 2000. He was 90.

Born on November 13, 1909 in Lutherville, he was the son of the late Phillip and Katharine Schmidt Hedderich. Early in life, his family moved to Longwoods and later to Cordova where he learned skills as a farmer. He returned to Baltimore in 1936 to work for the Crown, Cork, and Seal Company. In 1938, he married the former, Emma Catherine Nuce. In 1939, he began a long career with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as a fireman on steam locomotives. Over the next several years, he prepared for his advancement to the position of Engineer. He held the position of Engineer from 1945 until his retirement in 1974.

Mr. Hedderich was a member of the Druid Royal Arch Chapter #28 and the Masonic Order of the Pythagoras Lodge #123, both in Baltimore.

Mr. Hedderich is survived by a daughter, Carol L. Angel of Baltimore; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald L. and Rhonda Hedderich of Gray, TN; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Several brothers and sisters, Walter, Frederick, Carl, Elizabeth, Augusta, Pauline, and Sophie are deceased.

June 26, 2000

John Everett "Epps" Russell, a lifelong resident of Oxford until 1999, died at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines in Easton on Monday, June 26, 2000. He was 90.

Born in Oxford on March 14, 1910, he was the son of the late John and Elmira Ellison Russell. He was a commercial waterman and a captain on "The Elise" for many years before going to work at Crockett's Boat Yard. He retired as a foreman after 37 years of service. He had a great love for art and enjoyed painting. His wife, the former Katherine Purnell, died in 1980.

Mr. Russell is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Patricia A. Potter of Oxford, who took care of him; several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Michele Potter Williams of Trappe, Kimberley Potter Corkran of Parsonsburg, and Dawn Potter Cecil of Trappe; two sisters, Ruth Daffin of Tunis Mills and Margaret Dobson of St. Michaels; a brother, Allen Russell of Laurel, DE. A sister, Viola Sevier, and two brothers, Paul Russell and Melvin Russell, are deceased.

Memorial services will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford on Friday, June 30, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar, DE on Friday at 2:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department, Oxford, MD 21654.

June 25, 2000

Mrs. Rebecca H. “Rip” Faxon of Chestertown, Maryland, formerly of Milton and Quincy, Massachusetts, died at Heron Point on June 25, 2000.

Beloved mother of Rebecca F. Knowles, Elizabeth Faxon, Sarah F. Houlihan, Robert M. Faxon, Jr. grandmother of two and great grandmother of one.

Memorial services will be held at Wesley Hall, Heron Point in Chestertown, Maryland on Monday, July 3, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. A graveside service will take place at Mount Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy, Massachusetts on Thursday July 6, 2000 at noon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Milton Academy 170 Center Street Milton, Massachusetts 02186 or to Christ Church I.U. P.O. Box 161Worton, Maryland 21678.

William A. “Bill” Sutherland of Easton, died at Genesis Eldercare the Pines on Sunday June 25, 2000. He was 63.

Born on January 21, 1937 in Chicamuxen Maryland, he was the son of the late William A. and Lillian Miller Sutherland. After moving to Easton in the 1960’s he worked as a house painter until retiring for health reasons in 1987. His wife the former Katherine Morgan, died in April 1970.

Mr. Sutherland is survived by a daughter; Debbie Buckle of Hurlock, and three grandchildren. A brother J. Howard Sutherland is deceased.

Memorial services and burial will be private.

June 23, 2000

Robert W. Huyck of Centreville died at Heartfield of Easton on June 23, 2000. He was 75 years old.

Born in Willoughby, Ohio June 8, 1925, he was the son Ansel B. and Altie A. Huyck.

After graduating from Great Neck High School in Long Island, NY, he served in World War II from September 1943 to November 14, 1945. He was a Sergeant with the 845th Bomb Squadron of the Army of the United States. He was an aerial tail gunner in B17 and B24 aircraft with missions over Northern France and England. After the war he attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia where he graduated in 1950. The majority of his career was with the Connecticut Natural Gas Company in Greenwich, Connecticut as an engineer. After retiring from CNG he lived briefly in Wilmington, NC before settling in Chestertown and later Centreville, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Huyck, two daughters, Marilyn Huyck of Los Angeles, CA and Cheryl Huyck of Centreville, MD and son-in-law Frank DeGialleonardo also of Centreville. Two brothers, Frank B. Huyck and Charles S. Huyck are deceased.

He loved his family, nature, surf fishing in Cape Hatteras, NC and his dog Misty.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 29, 2000 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD.

Charlotte Knox, of Wittman, died at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, on Friday, June 23, 2000. She was 71.

Born near Cordova, January 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Louise Brandow Knox. A lifelong resident of Wittman, she enjoyed going to work with her father. Following his retirement, she worked at the Easton Adult Day Care Center until the time of her death. She enjoyed spending time with her family and tending to her flower gardens.

Charlotte is survived by two sisters, Jean Cheezum and Jane Sutphin, both of Wittman; six nieces, six nephews, six grand nieces and seven grand nephews and two great- grand nieces. Her mother, Louise Brandow Knox died on August 3, 1966 and her father, Lloyd Knox, died on November 4, 1998.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 27th, at 11 A.M. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be at Olivet Cemetery, St. Michaels, with her nephews, Daniel Sutphin, Gregory Sutphin, Wayne Sutphin, Jr., Shawn Sutphin, Dale Cheezum and her great-grandnephews, Daniel Sutphin, Jr. and Aron Albright serving as pallbearers.

Memorial donations may be made to the Regional Cancer Center, Memorial Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 1846, Easton, Md. 21601.

Henry Edwin Wallace Sr. of Galena, Md. died Sunday June 25, 2000 at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of heart failure. He was 85.

Henry Edwin Wallace Sr. was born July 23, 1914 in Millington, Md. He was the son of Mr. Harry Wallace and Lula Dixon Wallace. Mr. Wallace worked 23 years as a professional carpenter for Disabitino and Sons construction Co. in Wilmington, De. He retired in 1979. Mr. Wallace was a member of the Local Carpenters Union 626 in Wilmington, DE. And was a Life member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Wallace loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed working in his yard and gardening.

Henry Ewin Wallace Sr. is survived by his son Henry Ewin Wallace Jr. of Galena, Md. His daughter Patricia Schmidt of Memphis, Tenn. 2 Brothers, Robert S. Wallace of Millington, Md. and Harry Wallace Jr. of Brandon, Mississippi. 3 grand daughters, Dawn Richard of Williamsburg, Va., Paige Wallace of Salisbury, Md. , and Michele Driscoll of Dover, De.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys Mae Wallace, 5 sisters, Pauline Jones, Lillian Parnell, Betty Haley, Anne Hanifee, and Jean Duhamell. 2 brothers Frank Wallace and Ward L. “ Stump” Wallace.

Services will be held Wednesday June 28, 2000 at 11:00 am at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. Friends may call from 7-9 Tuesday evening.

Interment will be held at the Crumpton Cemetery, Crumpton, Md.

In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association Eastern Shore Chapter 1358 Parsons Rd. Salisbury, Md. 21801

June 23, 2000

Lora Jean Palmer died Friday June 23, 2000 at The Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 36.

Born in Milwaukee, WI on June 13, 1964, she was the daughter of Robert and Joanne Yurgae. On July 16, 1994 she married James L. Palmer and they made their home in Carlsbad, California where she was a member of the Daybreak Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Crystal Jean Wolfe of Desmoines, Iowa; two sisters, Lisa Vargas of Escondido,California and Jennifer of Sailaina Beach, California; and a grandson, Tyler Wolfe of Desmoines, Iowa. A son, Jacob Wayne Palmer, is deceased.

Memorial services will be held

Memorial contributions may be made to your local chapter of The American Diabetes Association.
