Frances Jeannette Shafer

WILLIAMSPORT - Frances Jeannette Shafer, 74, of 9431 Downsville Pike, Williamsport, died on Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Clearview Nursing Home.

Born June 24, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Beulah Delauter Deibert of Williamsport and the late Walter I. Deibert.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1942.

She was a homemaker. She raised, showed and pulled draft horses.

She was a member of Salem Reformed Church, Cearfoss.

She was a member of Fairplay Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, the Washington County Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Maryland Draft Horse and Mule Association.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles E. Shafer, Jr.; one daughter, Barbara J. Nutwell of Annapolis; three sisters, Catherine Delauter and Doris James, both of Hagerstown, and Betty Moser of Boonsboro; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Hoover.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. J. Clark Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

John H. Bivens

John Henry Bivens, 79, of 16425 Shinham Road, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 28, 1918, in Millstone, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel Ralph and Anna Gertrude Hoke Bivens.

He attended Wellers School, Hancock.

He retired from the Maryland State Highway Administration in 1983. Formerly, he worked at Fairchild Aircraft, Hicks Chevrolet, Letterkenny Army Depot, Texas Oil Co. in Ellicott City, Md., and Brakells Feed Mill.

A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was involved in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, among other campaigns.

He attended Mt. View Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Vallie M. Bivens of Hagerstown; one brother, Robert William Bivens of Hancock; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane Bivens and Ethel Mae Bivens Rubeck; and three brothers, Samuel Homer Bivens, Raymond Bivens and Paul Nelson Bivens.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Terry L. Hoke will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to the charity of one's choice.

Lois L. Willis

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Lois Lorraine Pitts Willis, 57, of Socastee, S.C., died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Conway Hospital.

Born in Polk County, Wis., she was the daughter of Catherine Pitts of Hagerstown and the late William Pitts.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by three daughters, Kathy Willis of Airway Heights, Wash., Mary Williamson of Myrtle Beach and Doris Hilliard of Williamsport; two sons, Bernard C. Willis Jr. of Myrtle Beach and John Willis of Hagerstown; five sisters, Karen Wright of Kearneysville, W.Va., Mary Phillips of Lynchburg, Va., Patty Yots of Clear Spring, and Marlene Williamson and Mary Copeland, both of Socastee; five brothers, Jerry Lapole of Florida, Tommy Thorpe and Butch Pitts, both of Conway, S.C., and Ralph Lapole and Ricky Pitts, both of Hagerstown; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, Conway, S.C.

The family will receive friends today one hour prior to the service at the gravesite.

William O. Shifflett

RINGGOLD - William Owen Shifflett, 86, of Newcomer Road, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.

Born Sept. 5, 1911, in Beldor, Va., he was the son of the late Alexander and Myrtie Ann Elizabeth Davis Shifflett.

He was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy, serving for 20 years. He was employed by A&P Co.

He was a member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Hagerstown, was a Sunday school teacher and was superintendent and treasurer of the Sunday school. He also attended Ringgold Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Acy Ruth Hatfield Shifflett; three daughters, Carolyn Shifflett Allen of West Millbury, Mass., Betty Shifflett Fiorillo of North Attleboro, Mass., and Cheryl Shifflett of Ringgold; a son, William Alexander Shifflett of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sisters, Cecil Miner of Waynesboro, Pa., and Mabel West of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ, 14426 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown. The Rev. Don Conley will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ringgold Church of Christ, 14426 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Pauline Isabel Arvin

Pauline Isabel Arvin, 86, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 3, 1912, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Christian R. and Dessie M. Chaney Sellers.

She had been employed with Hartle's Fairchild Aircraft and Interwoven Knitting Mill.

She was a member of AARP and was president of the Tenant Association for Potomac Towers.

She is survived by her husband, Edgar H. Arvin; a son, Glenn Presgraves of Hagerstown, seven stepdaughters, Shirley Hillard of Williamsport, Margaret Harbaugh, Sharon Mackereth, Linda Boward, and June Wallech, all of Hagerstown, Barbara Handwerk of Norristown, Pa., and Donna Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three stepsons, Edgar W. Arvin of Williamsport, Richard G. Arvin of Funkstown and James Arvin of Williamsport, Pa.; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 35 stepgrandchildren and 50 stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Revs. Robert S. Barton and Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Suite 306-B, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Edgar Hoyer Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Edgar Hoyer Sr., 95, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 23, 1902, in Perth Amboy, N.J., he was the son of the late Waldemar and Elna Holst Hoyer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marianitta "Anita" Kolb Riggles Hoyer.

He retired from Palmer Ford in Hyattsville, Md., and previously was employed by Super Concrete in Washington.

He was a member of United Church of Christ in Lemaster, Pa.

He is survived by a son, Edgar Hoyer Jr. of Hagerstown; and two grandsons, Brian Lawrence Hoyer of Towson, Md., and Andrew Scarborough Hoyer of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Cogswell Hoyer; and a brother, Waldemar Romeis Hoyer.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James School Chapel. The Rev. Stuart Dunnan and the Rev. John E. Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Md.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to St. James School, St. James, Md. 21781.

Evelyn W. Duke

Evelyn "Ebie" Williams Duke, 84, of 11 W. Baltimore St., died Monday, May 11, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Berth Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Duke.

She graduated from North Street School in Hagerstown.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft Corp., Hagerstown, and had worked for the U.S. government.

She was a lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she had been superintendent of the church school, a member of the senior choir, a member of the administrative council and secretary of United Methodist Women.

She was a member and past matron of Deborah Chapter 12, Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Cross of Grapevine, Texas; a brother, Melvin "Pat" Williams of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two grandchildren; nieces and a nephew; and by a close friend, Pearl Williams, who was her caregiver.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Katherine Howard, Alice Williams and Elsie Williams; and six brothers, Carroll Williams, Kenneth Williams, John Williams, T. Andrew Williams, Merrill Williams and Kermit Williams.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church. The Rev. Anthony T. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, where Eastern Star will conduct a service at 7:45 p.m.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Kenneth W. Fones

Kenneth William Fones, 41, of Hagerstown, died there Monday, May 11, 1998.

Born May 29, 1956, in Washington D.C., he was the son of Frank T. Fones and the late Gertrude L. Bowden.

He was a high school graduate.

He worked as a mechanic.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was a volunteer firefighter with Chillum Co. 34, Adelphi, Md., and a former firefighter for the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md.

He is survived by a sister, Linda L. Feeney of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; a brother, Frank T. Fones of Annapolis; an uncle; a niece and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Hanna Devries.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Rodney Truax will officiate. There will be a graveside service Monday at 11 a.m. in Culpeper National Cemetery.

A viewing will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
