Lee D. Hays

SMITHSBURG - Lee D. Hays, 66, of Wolfsville Road, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 6, 1932, near Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Lloyd D. and Cora M. Lewis Hayes.

He had retired from Independent Cement Co. of Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Smithsburg.

He was a member of Salem Lodge 196, AF&AM, Smithsburg; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936, Hagerstown; Antietam Fire Co., Hagerstown; Little Motorcycle Club, Hagerstown and AARP. He was a life member of Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patsy JoAnn Semler Hays; a daughter, Cindy M. McCune of Greencastle, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Spitzer of State Line, Pa.; and a brother, Donald E. Hays of Smithsburg.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 51 S. Main St., Smithsburg. The Rev. Paul Heefner will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. Salem Lodge 196, AF&AM will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dream Come True, 1201 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Brice D. Hanna

Brice David Hanna, infant son of David and Diana L. Burnett Hanna, of 11003 Eastwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Michelle Renee Hanna of Hagerstown, and Kristin Lynn Hanna, at home; a brother, Aaron Patrick Hanna, at home; maternal grandparents, Roger and Adona Burnett of Hancock; and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ruth Shipley.

Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1253 Mount Aetna Road, Hagerstown. Bishop James N. Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Alma M. Ketterman

WILLIAMSPORT - Alma Moore Ketterman, 77, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of 11923 Cheryl Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Homewood Nursing Center, Williamsport.

Born Nov. 20, 1920, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George Mason and Linda L. Harper Moore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Josiah Ketterman, in 1995.

She was a graduate of Frostburg State Teachers College.

She taught for 30 years in the Washington County schools, including at Boonsboro, Wayside and Pangborn elementary schools.

She was a life member of First Christian Church, the chancel choir, Treble Clef Club and Ever Ready Class. She was a pianist, a teacher in the primary department for more than 35 years and director of Children's Choir for 13 years.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Women in Education, Washington County Retired Teachers Association, Maryland State Teachers Association and National Education Association.

She is survived by three stepdaughters, Patricia A. Jones of Richmond, Va., Mary Jo Feruzza-Allen of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Pamela Ketterman-Stevens of Hagerstown; a stepson, Carroll E. Ketterman of Seaford, Del.; two sisters, Ellen G. Mullenix of Hagerstown and Martha Lee Cotten of Petersburg, Va.; a brother, Thomas H. Moore of Hagerstown; 10 stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

A viewing will be held Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Music Department of First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Grover E. Moser Jr.

NEEDLES, Calif. - Grover Eugene "Gene" Moser Jr., 59, of Needles, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, in Yucca, Ariz.

Born April 30, 1938, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Grover E. and Dorothy Ankeney Moser Sr.

He was a self-employed auto repairman at Gene's RV Repair in Needles.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Kristen Shupp of Hagerstown and Robin Jean Moser of Orlando, Fla.; four sisters, Olive Grace Richards of Mansfield, Ohio, Ella Mary Myers of Falling Waters, W.Va., Margareatha Ann Cook of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Dorothy Elizabeth Green of Smithsburg; a brother, Leon Ankeney Moser of Congress, Ariz.; and two granddaughters.

No services were held.

Grace V. McVicker

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Grace Virginia McVicker, 61, of 10733 Green Valley Road, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at her sister's home in Davis, W.Va.

Born Jan. 30, 1937, in Canaan Valley. W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Andy Christian and Nora Mae Goldizen Rohrbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. McVicker, in 1995.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Ann Fuller of Cumberland, Md.; a son, Robert Huffman of Union Bridge; a stepdaughter, Virginia Ratliffe of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; three stepsons, Ray McVicker of Alabama, and Robert McVicker and John McVicker, both of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sisters, Beulah Lawrence, Rose McCabe and Betty Sponaugle, all of Davis; four grandchildren; and 10 stepgrandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown, Md. The Rev. William M. Bucher will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Louise O. Byers

Louise O. Byers, 89, of 17606 Homewood Road, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 19, 1908, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Owen A. and Carrie L. Englar Gilbert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. "Chi" Byers Sr., in 1982.

She retired in 1970 from Harper & Row Publishing Co.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Washington County Hospital Auxiliary and AARP.

She is survived by a son, Paul R. "Bud" Byers Jr. of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lee Byers.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William O. Shifflett

RINGGOLD - William Owen Shifflett, 86, of Newcomer Road, who died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, also is survived by eight grandchildren.

Robert E. Lakin

BOONSBORO - Robert Elwood Lakin, 88, of Boonsboro, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1909, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Robert Thompson and Lenora McLaughlin Lakin.

As owner and president of the J.B. Ferguson Co., Inc., he was responsible for the construction and engineering of many structures throughout the five state area including Washington County Hospital additions, Pangborn Hall, and the initial Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, engineering for the Pentagon near Fort Ritchie and the DuPont plant in Falling Waters, W.Va., and many restoration projects, including the Hager House. He also was involved in the engineering and construction of water, wastewater, filtration plants and environment systems.

He was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, Boonsboro, where he was a member and president of the consistory.

He was a member of Hagerstown Rotary Club, past president and charter member of the Economic Development Commission of Washington County, board member of the Salvation Army, board member of Coffman Home for the Aging, past president and member of Associated Builders and Contractors, a director of Keedysville Bank. He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Beall Lakin; two daughters, Eleanor V. Lakin and Patricia L. Lemkuhl, both of Boonsboro; two granddaughters, Yvette L. May of Boonsboro and Yvonne L. Krayer of Centerville, Va.; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Lakin and Helen Lakin Trueheart.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Willard Rahn and the Rev. Kenneth Harrington will officiate. Burial will be in the Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Washington County Agricultural Museum, Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, Md. 21713.

Paul V. Singleton

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Paul Vernon "Pete" Singleton, 51, of 11537 Taneytown Pike, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 9, 1946, in Williamsport, he was the son of Elnora V. Monn Singleton of Odenton, Md., and the late Roscoe Singleton.

He was employed as a carpenter with the C&O Canal in Sharpsburg.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the Navy Reserve during the Vietnam War. During the Persian Gulf War, he was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va. He was discharged on Aug. 25, 1997, with the rank of BU1. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Navy "E" Ribbon, Naval Reserve Meritorious Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Mount Airy, Md.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina E. Deaver Singleton, whom he married May 5, 1967; five children, Frankie E. Singleton and Victoria L. Singleton, both of Emmitsburg, Tina Marie Dailey of Hanover, Pa., Jeff A. Singleton of Hagerstown, and Billie Jo Reed of N.A.W.C. Pax River, Md.; three sisters, Nancy Hood of Odenton, Ruby Gribble of Pasadena, Md., and Sharon Kay Faulkner of Severn, Md.; three brothers, Donald Singleton of Baltimore, Clay Singleton and Ronald Singleton, both of Glen Burnie, Md.; eight grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene Singleton, Larry Singleton and Gary Singleton.

Services will be held at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, Md. The Rev. Wally Gates will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday and Monday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Frederick Chapter, 1101 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. 21701.
