Paul R. Shaffer
KNOXVILLE - Paul R. Shaffer, 42, of 19454 Garrett's Mill Road, died Friday, May 22, 1998, at his home.
Born July 24, 1955, in Oakland, Md., he was the son of John D. Shaffer of Montrose, W.Va., and Helen D. Wilson Shaffer of Laurel, Md.
He was an auto body technician.
He was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Brunswick, Md.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Deborah Ann Shaffer; a daughter, Dawn Shaffer, at home; a son, John Shaffer, at home; a sister, Charlotte Diggs of Keedysville; and two brothers, David and Roger Shaffer, both of Laurel.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Faith Assembly of God Church in Brunswick. The Revs. James Stemple Sr., James Miller and James Stemple Jr. will officiate.
Harold A. Baker
Harold A. Baker, 90, of 1316 The Terrace, Hagerstown, died Friday, May 22, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport.
Born Sept. 6, 1907, in Union Bridge, Md., he was the son of the late William A. and Florence A. Yingling Baker.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Baker, and his second wife, Opal Baker.
He retired from Western Maryland Railway.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in Transport Command.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
He also was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion and a life member of Suburban Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by a sister, Dorothy A. MacDonald of Hagerstown.
There will be no viewing. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family requests the omission of flowers.
Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
Hazel A. Shaffer
ANNANDALE, Va. - Hazel A. Shaffer, 82, a resident of Leewood Health Care Center, and formerly of Vienna, Va., and 3289 Sportsman Road, Greencastle, Pa., died Friday, May 22, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born June 28, 1915, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late James and Minnie E. Miller Jackson.
Her husband, Glenn R. Shaffer, died in 1986.
She was a homemaker and had worked as a sales clerk at various Baltimore-area stores.
She was a member of the Arbutus, Md., United Methodist Church.
She also was a member of Gad-Abouts Square Dance Club in Greencastle, Circulators Square Dance Club in Laurel, Md., MOMS of American in the Baltimore area, and attended Greencastle Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two daughters, Jeanie Smith of Vienna and Betty E. Woerner of Westminster, Md.; a son, Thomas L. Shaffer of Ellicott City, Md.; a sister, Ruth Everett of Arbutus; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, Md. The Rev. Thomas Weer will officiate. Burial will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday; and at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
John J. Kline
John Junior "Sonny" Kline, 69, of W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 29, 1928, in Chewsville, Md., he was the son of the late John Russel and Daisy Olive Brunner Kline.
He retired from Shank Farms Inc., Hagerstown.
He is survived by four daughters, Lois J. Andrews of Halfway, Joan L. Myers and Dorothy J. Smallwood, both of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Donna M. Deloso of Hancock; one son, George A. Kline of Hagerstown; three sisters, Vauda Martz of Hagerstown, Martha Williams of Smithsburg and Mable Armstrong of Lappans; three brothers, Daniel Kline of Hagerstown, Clarence Kline of Chewsville and Jerry Kline of Smithsburg; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a friend, Mary E. Norris.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard Kline, Grayson Kline Sr. and Kenneth Kline.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Longmeadow Cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lawrence T. Carroll
Lawrence Thorne Carroll, 70, of Little Antietam Road, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 9, 1928, in Washington, N.C., he was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Elizabeth Pluff Carroll.
He was a self-employed television repairman.
He served in both the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army.
He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Arline McCarthy Carroll; one daughter, M. Holly Graybill of Clear Spring; one son, Stephen Kevin Carroll of Hagerstown; two sisters, Marion Whichard and Gloria Bopst, both of Frederick, Md.; three grandsons; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Franklin Carroll, Eugene Andrew Carroll, Walter Bickett Carroll and John Spencer Carroll.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Smithsburg Cemetery. The Rev. Bradley J. Graybill will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
Patricia V. Stains
Patricia Virginia Stains, 57, of 13662 Greencastle Pike, Hagerstown, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 17, 1941, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Laura O. "Lib" Lowman of Clear Spring and the late Charles Vernon Lowman.
She was employed for 20 years by Antietam Cable Co. in Hagerstown as a sales representative.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Clear Spring and attended Rehoboth United Methodist Church of Williamsport.
She was a member of Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Donald R. Stains Sr. of Hagerstown; three sons, Donald R. Stains Jr. of Hagerstown, Michael T. Stains of Clear Spring and Gregory S. Stains of Williamsport; one sister, Sonja Lou Mundey of Clear Spring; eight grandchildren, including one granddaughter, Krystal Dawn Stains, whom she raised; and seven nieces and nephews.
Chapel services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. Dr. Terry Foor will officiate. Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. James Swecker will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Anna M. Gross
BOONSBORO - Anna Mae Gross, 85, of 8054 Mapleville Road, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 6, 1912, near Middletown, Md., she was the daughter of the late John Calvin and Callie May McBride Flook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Gross, in 1960.
She was a homemaker and farmer.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Swartz of Hagerstown and Esther M. Gross of Boonsboro; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary L. Flook; and two brothers, Lloyd Flook and Amos Flook.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Boonsboro Cemetery. The Rev. Elza Hurst will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.
John A. Clabaugh
THURMONT, Md. - John "Johnny" A. Clabaugh, 67, of Thurmont, died Friday, May 22, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 7, 1931, in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Elmer W. and Carrie A. Lewis Clabaugh.
He operated Clabaugh's Orchards, the family fruit orchard.
He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and vegetable gardening.
He was a member of American Legion Post 168 and AMVETS Post 7, both in Thurmont.
He is survived by two sisters, Laura Stone Tenney of Taneytown, Md., and Lottie M. Bostian of Thurmont; five brothers, Clifford E. Clabaugh, Lewis F. Clabaugh and Joseph H. Clabaugh, all of Thurmont, Elmer W. Clabaugh of Hanover, Pa., and Ray E. Clabaugh of Littlestown, Pa.; and a special friend, Mary Izzy Rentsel of Thurmont.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Carrie Ruth Clabaugh; and one brother, J. Richard Clabaugh.
Services were held Tuesday.

Benjamin M. Smith
HANCOCK - Benjamin M. Smith, 86, of Hancock; and formerly of St. Charles County, Mo., died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center, St. Charles, Mo.
Born Nov. 4, 1911, in Buchs Valley, Pa., he was the son of the late John H. and Caroline Trail Smith.
He retired, after 27 years, as an aircraft technician from McDonnell Douglas Corp., St. Louis. Later, he worked for NASA at Cape Kennedy, Fla.; he retired from here in 1975.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1930 to 1935.
He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion, Hagerstown; and Maryland International Association of Machinists.
He is survived by his wife, Dortha H. Smith; one daughter, Rosaline Y. Couser of St. Charles; one sister, Caroline Hixon of Warfordsburg, Pa.; one grandson; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
Service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. Burial will be in Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Needmore, Pa.
Visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
