June 20, 2000

Captain John Cosden Miller, better known as Captain Jack, of Church Hill, Md. died on June 20, 2000 in Hartly, Delaware. He was 74.

He was born to William T. and Elizabeth Rose Cosden Miller on March 17, 1926. He was raised by his legal guardians and Uncle, Captain Benjamin H. and Henrietta Donlan Cosden. He was educated in Cordova and Chestertown, Md. Captain Jack entered the U.S. Navy in Sampson, NY on November 8, 1943. He attended Diesel Electric School in Ames, IA, Small Craft Maintenance School at the Naval Yard in Philadelphia, PA, Gun School, in VA Beach, VA, and Amphibian School in Damn Neck, VA.

He served on the USS Burleson in Vallejo, California, the Amphibious Attack Ship 167 in support of the 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions in Guam and Espirito Santos and on the USS Rutland, APA 192 in support of the same two divisions during the invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday April 1, 1945. He served on the USS Egret, Mine Sweeper #46 during the Korean Conflict. Captain Miller also served in Vietnam for 3 years with the 1st Junk Fleet as an Advisor to the Vietnamese, and later aboard the Destroyers USS Forrester, USS Carpenter, and The missle guided cruiser USS Chicago, with the Shore Bombardment group. His final tour of duty was Chief of Station at Quonset Point, RI. He served for thirty-two years, twenty-six and a half of those on active duty. His service medals, campaign ribbons, and personal awards are too numerous to mention. Captain Miller, his father, and his 5 brothers served faithfully in WWI, WWII, Korea, and/or Vietnam. The Miller household was one of God and Country.

Upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy as Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Captain Jack piloted tugboats and oil tankers in western rivers, costal, and offshore waters. He also sailed internationally with Sun Oil Company. He was a navigational instructor at the Seafarers International Union in Piney Point, Maryland, University of Rhode Island Engineering School and Johnson and Whales College. Captain Miller was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association in Annapolis, Md., Past Commander and life member of the V.F.W. Post 652 in Millington, Md., a life member of the American Legion Post #18 Centreville, Md. and Bay Country Moose Lodge in Queenstown, Md. Captain Jack was very proud that he was the only former member of the U.S. Navy that was a life member of the USMC Tankers Association.

His wife Mary Evelyn Everett and his brothers predeceased him. He is survived by a son: Robert F. Miller and his wife Stephanie of Honolulu, Hawaii, a granddaughter Sarah Megan Agnew Miller and a grandson: Stephen Patrick Agnew Miller also of Honolulu, Hawaii. He is also survived by a dear and long-time companion and friend: Catherine Annie Bowers Faulkner and her four children Bruce, Kenneth, Kathy, and Karen of Hartly, Delaware.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday June 28, 2000 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, Md. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery.

June 19, 2000

William Robert Seger, of Oxford, died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton on Monday, June 19, 2000. He was 73.

Born in Trenton, N.J., March 17, 1927, he was the son of the late William Arnold and Irma Schoening Seger. After graduating from the Severn Preparatory School in Severna Park, he served in the U. S. Army in The Occupation Forces in Japan during World War ll. Following hisrelease from active duty, he attended the University of Maryland. His life's work was as a sales representative in marine products, boat brokerage and the sale of new boats until retiring in the early 1990's.

A resident of Oxford since 1952, he was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford and the Oxford Volunteer Fire Co. where he had served as President, Secretary and Trustee and was very active on many committees including the Engine Acquisition Committee, the Annual Fund Raising Committee which he chaired and the Endowment Fund which he founded. He was a member and Past President of the Talbot County Volunteer Firemen's Association and a member of the County Radio Committee. He had also been a member of the Earleigh Heights Vol. Fire Company.

Active in sailing, he was a member of the Storm Trysail Club, a past member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club and had participated in seventeen ocean races and one Trans-Atlantic race.

His first wife, the former Dale Johnson whom he married in September of 1952, died in September of 1996.

Mr. Seger is survived by his wife, the former Deborah Pfitzinger Somers whom he married in May of 1999; two step-children, Emily and Reynolds Somers and two brothers, Richard S. Seger of Dallas, Texas and George W. Seger of Easton.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 21st, at 2 P.M. at the Church of The Holy Trinity, Oxford. Burial, with fire company honors, will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford,MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Oxford Vol. Fire Company Endowment Fund, P. O. Box 421, Oxford, Md. 21654.

June 18, 2000

James Alexander Lippincott, 52 former boat builder, champion sailboat racer, and sailmaker, and known as "Jitters" by his sailing friends died Sunday, June 18, 2000 at Genesis Eldercare at Easton, MD. Jim was originally from Riverton, New Jersey and from the Eastern Shore of Maryland since 1974.

A resident of Easton since 1974, he was born on November 3, 1947 and was raised in Riverton, NJ. He graduated from Moorestown High School in Moorestown, NJ, and Lees-McRae Junior College in North Carolina. He also attended Pembroke State University in North Carolina.

He was the son of the late Robert Louis Lippincott, renowned Star Class World Championship sailor and one-design boatbuilder and Edith Ridley Lippincott of Oxford, formerly of Riverton, NJ. He learned to sail both on the Delaware River and the Tred Avon River in the mid 1950's. He enjoyed memberships at the Riverton Yacht Club, The Seaside Park Yacht Club, and the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

He moved to Annapolis where he worked for Murphy & Nye Sailmakers and he was eventually transferred to Laspezia, Italy for one year to promote sailing and sails. There he instructed big boat sailors on sail trim and racing techniques. He established Lippincott Sailmakers, Inc. in Trappe, and later in St. Michaels, where he specialized in One-Design racers, Cruising Designs, and his favorite, the Log Canoes.

Jimmy was a National Champion in the Duster 14-foot pram class. He was twice the International Champion of the Comet Class, once in Bermuda, and then again in Annapolis. In 1976 he won the International Star Class Championship of South America in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition he placed third in the International Star Class World Championship sailed in Chicago, and in the Lightning Class he was a Southern Circuit Champion.

He had a stellar career in large racing sailboats which included many races on the Chesapeake Bay, the New Jersey Coast, and on the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit ( the SORC), culminating with being the Helmsman on a Maxi Boat Series, the California to Mazatlan Race against his arch rivals, Dennis Connors and Tom Blackaller. His sailing and sailmaking careers came to an end when he was 37 years old and was stricken with MS.

Jim was a collateral descendant of General George Washington being descended from two of his brothers, John Augustine and Samuel Washington. He is survived by his mother, Edith Sears Ridley Lippincott of Oxford; four brothers, Richard Washington Lippincott, of Oxford; Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert Louis Lippincott, Jr., of Poquoson, VA; William Ridley Lippincott, of St. Michaels and John Howard Lippincott, of Naples FL.; four nieces, Stacey Seymour, Jennifer Lippincott, Mary Ann Lippincott and Ashley Lippincott; three nephews: Ryan Lippincott, Johnny Lippincott and Bobby Lippincott, of Oxford; one great nephew, Robbie Seymour and two aunts, Elizabeth and Christine Ridley from Easton; four uncles and four aunts from New Jersey and Long Island; and twenty seven first cousins.

Memorial services will take place at 12:00 noon on Friday June 23, 2000 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Morris Street, Oxford, MD. Interment will be at the Zion Episcopal Church in Charlestown, W. VA. where many of the Washington family are buried.

Malcolm M. Allen of Easton died at Genesis ElderCare the Pines, on Sunday June 18, 2000. He was 85.

Born in Prince George's County on September 24, 1914 he was the son of the late Preston B. and Irene Day Allen. After he attended public school in Prince George's county he worked as a self-employed carpenter, and in 1950 he moved to Easton.

Mr. Allen has no immediate survivors.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2000 at 10:00am at the Talbot Bible Church, Chapel Road, Easton.

Lydia Magrogan Andrew of Centreville, Md. died at her residence on Sunday June 18, 2000. She was 79.

Lydia Magrogan Andrew was born on August 15, 1921 in Crumpton, Md. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Magrogan and Mary Malloy. She graduated from Chestertown High School, Class of 1938. Mrs. Andrew worked for Jewell Brothers in Lynch, Md. from 1938 until 1948. On January 3,1948 she married Harold E. Andrew of Centreville, Md. Together they began farming in Easton, Md. until 1955 when they moved to Lands End near Centreville, Md.

Organizations: Past member of the Ladies of Moose in Easton Lodge; Easton, Md.

Lydia is survived by; 1 son Harold E. Andrew Jr. of Church Hill, Md.; 1 daughter Gladys Mary Russum of Kennedyville, Md.; 1 brother John J. Magrogan of Baltimore, Md.; 2 sisters Katherine C. Besse of Worton, Md., Julia M. Reardon of New Castle, De.; and 2 Grandchildren.

Lydia was predeceased by her husband Harold E. Andrew ,1 brother Joseph E. Magrogan Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 22, 2000 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home P.A. in Centreville, Md. at _11:00 AM_. Family and Friends may call on _Wednesday_June 21,2000 from 7-9pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home P.A. in Centreville, Md.

Burial will follow Thursdays service at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton, Md.

June 16, 2000

Florence Greene Pfeiffer of Grasonville, MD. died June 16, 2000 at the Mink Hill Assisted Living Center in Grasonville, MD. She was 81.

Graveside services will be held on 2PM Monday June 19, 2000 at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Middleville, N.Y.

June 15, 2000

Konrad Georg Stingl died at his residence on Thursday, June 15, 2000. He was 88.

Born on the shores of Lake Konstanz in Konstanz, Germany on January 8, 1912, he was the son of the late Anton and Maria Gutemann Stingl. Following his elementary education, he pursued an apprenticeship toward a master certificate as a pastry chef. He specialized in design, particularly spun and blown sugar creations. In 1937, he traveled to Tiensin, China to work for the renowned firm of Kiesling & Bader. It was there that he met his wife, the former Ellinor Rumpf, and they were married on April 24, 1941. He returned to Germany where he remained until WWII ended, and then he emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 on the ship, the USS Shark. The ship arrived in NY where he spent the next twenty-five years practicing his trade and teaching at the Culinary Institute in Manhattan. His accomplishments include many first place awards at exhibitions for culinary design in sugar work and a rendition of the flag raising at Iwo Jima created from a 50 pound block of chocolate, which the U.S. marine Corp commissioned him to make. In 1974, he retired and returned to Lake Konstanz in Germany until June 1999 when they moved back to the U.S. to Cordova.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Dagmar Walters of Howell, NJ, Angelika Luginbuhl of St. Augustine, FL, Eleonore Mungiguerra of Lewisville, TX, and Susanne Nielsen of Cordova; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Anton Stingl, Johan Stingl, Paul Stingl, and Alois Stingl, are deceased.

A celebration of his life will held at 29631 Brooks Lane, Cordova, the home of the Nielsen’s, on Sunday, June 25, 2000 from 4-8 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

June 12, 2000

Thomas Leonard Krauth, of Easton, died at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD on Monday, June 12, 2000.

Born in Eminence, Kentucky he was the son of Oliver Charles and Lillian Weaurton Krauth. After graduating from Eminence High School he attended Georgia Tech. Mr. Krauth was a Service Manager at Western Electric in Union, New Jersey for 46 years until his retirement in 1981. On December 18, 1967 he married Elaine D. Jepson and they made their home in Union, New Jersey.

A resident of Easton for eleven years, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Easton and former member and elder at Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church in Union, New Jersey. Mr. Krauth was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and The Chamber of Commerce of Union, New Jersey.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Krauth is survived by one son, Thomas M. Krauth of Bethesda, MD., three daughters; Susan K. Unice of Bridgewater, New Jersey, Marianne K. Connors of Holland Township, New Jersey, Lillian W. Perri of Alpharetta, Georgia and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday June 16, 2000 at 11:00 AM at the McCracken Funeral Home in Union, New Jersey. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday June 15 from 2-4:00 PM and 7-9:00 PM.

Burial will be at the Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, New Jersey.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Presbyterian Church in Easton.

Memorial Donations may be made to The Memorial Fund of The Presbyterian Church of Easton, 617 N. Washington St., Easton, MD 21601.

Ruth Elizabeth “Libby” McClure of Stevensville, MD. Died after a long illness on June 12, 2000 at Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville, MD. She was 79.

Born on September 13, 1920 in Gaithersburg, MD. She was the daughter of the later Cleveland B. & Ruth Bowden Schwartz. She was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, MD. She married Henry A. McClure on December 12, 1959. They resided in Montgomery County & Prince Georges County, retiring and moving to Arkansas and later moving to the Eastern Shore in Stevensville, MD.

She is survived by her husband Henry A. McClure of Stevensville, MD. Two daughters Elizabeth Ann Proctor of Laurel, MD. and Judy Harper of Edmund, OK. Two sons George Raymond Smith of Little Rock, AK and Kevin Corbett McClure of Boise, ID. Two brothers Harold Schwartz of Columbia, MD. and John Schwartz of Wheaton, MD. A sister Margaret Schwartz of Olney, MD. Ten (10) grandchildren and twelve (12) great grandchildren. A brother Peter “ Pete” Schwartz predeceased her.

Memorial services will be held 11AM Thursday June 15, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, and P.A. in Chester, MD. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on June 28, 2000 at 2PM. The Family request that memorial contributions be made to the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department P.O. Box 27 Stevensville, MD. 21666.
