William R. Magaha Sr.

ELDORADO, Md. - William R. Magaha Sr., 72, of Eldorado and formerly of Arbutus, Md., Winchester, Va., and Charles Town, W.Va., died Monday, May 25, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late John H. and Margaret Ann Elizabeth Myers Magaha.

He retired from CSX Railroad in 1988 with 38 years of service.

In the mid-1950s he served as deputy sheriff of Jefferson County, W.Va.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Evangelical Bible Church, Baltimore, where he served as a Sunday school teacher; chairman of the church's Shiloh campground on the Eastern Shore and was a licensed evangelist. He moved to Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1989 and became a member of Evangelical Bible Church, Brookview, Md.

He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Local 97.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Garber Magaha, whom he married in 1944; two daughters, Nora Lee Magaha Jones of Eldorado and Roberta Lynn Magaha Della Vedova of Carlsbad, Calif.; one son, William Randall Magaha Jr. of Arbutus, Md.; six sisters and brothers, Francis Magaha of Ranson, W.Va., Kathleen Samsell of Marlowe, W.Va., Newton Magaha of Denton, Md., Elizabeth Adams of Rippon, W.Va., and Bettie Slaughter and M. Glenn Magaha of Frederick, Md.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Magaha, Doris Withrow, Eunice Wheeler, Charlotte Kackley and Margaret Fuller; and two brothers, Gerald J. Magaha and J. Edward Magaha.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester. The Rev. Mark Blevins of the Oakwood Bible Church of Baltimore, will officiate. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester. A Christian Fellowship will be held for family and friends at Crums United Methodist Church, Berryville, Va., following the service.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at Evangelical Bible Church in Brookview at a future date.

Gregory A. Pena

Gregory Allen Pena, 49, of 11926 Sycamore Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 27, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of George S. and Dorothy Allen Pena of Lipan, Texas.

He was employed by Mack Trucks as an electrician for 19 years.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as petty officer first class in the U.S. Navy.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of UAW Local 842; AMVETS; North American Rod and Gun Club; Moose Lodge; and National Rifle Association of America.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patricia M. Sweeney Pena; one son, Christophe A. Pena of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Marla B. Westley of Greencastle, Pa., and Karen E. Holder of Hagerstown; two stepsons, Glenn G. Holder of Chambersburg, Pa., and Maj. Barry K. Holder of Andrews Air Force Base, Va.; one sister, Paula Lafferty of Richardson, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evangiline M. Smith

Evangiline Margaret "Sammie" Smith, 75, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born July 4, 1922, in Sedalia, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Maj. Amel and Lula Mae Gregory Shultz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman M. Smith, in 1971.

She retired from Bikle's Shoes and was previously employed by Leonard's Draperies for 25 years.

She was a 50-year member of Christ's Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir.

She was a member of the Salvation Army.

She is survived by one daughter, Judith A. Semler of Hagerstown; one sister, June Chinnis of Florida; one brother, Robert A. Shultz of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ's Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Maryland School for the Deaf, 101 Clark Place, Frederick, Md. 21701.

Edward C. Ardinger Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Edward Charles "Bunk" Ardinger Sr., 80, formerly of Williamsport, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Clearview Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 1, 1918, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Stuart H. and Ida Eugene Silvers Ardinger.

He was employed by C. William Hetzer Inc. and W.D. Byron Tannery, retiring in 1980.

He served with the Maryland National Guard during World War II. He previously was with the Maryland Minutemen.

He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, Williamsport.

He was a member of Williamsport Volunteer Fire Co., Williamsport.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Loretta Speaker Ardinger of Smithsburg; four daughters, Miriam Shatzer of Hagerstown, Barbara Liller of Fairplay, Carolyn Smith of Smithsburg and Dolly VanFleet of Boonsboro; three sons, Richard Ardinger and Elmer Ardinger, both of Hagerstown, and Edward Ardinger Jr. of Boonsboro; five sisters, Naomi Jack of San Jose, Calif., Emma Weaver of Williamsport, June Moats, Blanche Reed and Carrie Gaver, all of Hagerstown; one brother, Robert Ardinger of Hagerstown; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Ardinger and Joseph Ardinger.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open today after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Rollin F. Stahl

Rollin Frederick Stahl, 98, of 25 West Side Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 24, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 15, 1899, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frederick Roscoe and Emma C. Wolfensberger Stahl.

He was employed by the B&O Railroad, working from Brunswick, Md., most of his career, and later from Baltimore. He retired in 1966.

He was a member of Christ Reformed Church.

He was a member of Eagles Club and a life member of the Moose Club in Brunswick.

He enjoyed dancing, gardening and music.

He is survived by three daughters, Bonnie Arey of North Carolina, Sherry Henson of Berea, W.Va., and Caroline Duhamel, with whom he lived, of Hagerstown; one son, Eugene Rollin Stahl of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Debbie Rickett and Cathy Swope, both of Clear Spring; two stepsons, Ronald Swope and Jeff Swope, both of Hagerstown; one brother, O. Ragan Stahl of Williamsport; 19 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Slaydon and Eva Hoffman; and two brothers, Leon Stahl and Eugene Stahl.

Memorial services will be held today at noon at Christ Reformed Church, 130 W. Franklin St. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his daughter, Caroline J. Duhamel, 25 West Side Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Charles E. Gosnell

KNOXVILLE, Md. - Charles Ervin Gosnell, 74, of 814 Tritapoe Drive, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Knoxville, he was the son of the late Ebenezer and Myrtle Louise Cooper Gosnell.

He retired as a brakeman from B&O Railroad, Brunswick, Md., with 37 years of service.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Boonsboro.

He was a member of B&O Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Tritapoe Gosnell; two daughters, Stella Virginia Sigler of Middletown and Debora Lee Stream of Brunswick; three sons, Lester Deneen Jr. of Brunswick, the Rev. Wayne E. Gosnell of Carlisle, Pa., and Dennis E. Gosnell of Brunswick; one brother, Eurly Gosnell of Brunswick; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Betty Hahn, Viola Hawes, Virginia Ambrose, Rosie Wheeler and Esther Hutzell; and three brothers, George Gosnell, William Gosnell and Otho Gosnell.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church, 8014 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Edward Wade will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, Md. 21701.

Bessie K. Tenney

Bessie Kathern Hetzer Tenney, 96, of 1000 Hamilton Blvd., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Home, Hagerstown.

Born May 12, 1902, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Edward K. and May M. Gibbs Hetzer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Tenney, in 1970.

She was a 1920 honor graduate of Washington County High School.

She retired in 1967 as a secretary-agent from Hutson-Hetzer Insurance Co., Hagerstown.

She was a life member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Washington County Historical Society with Miller House.

She is survived by a niece, Janet D. White of Towson, Md.; and a nephew, Randal G. Hutson of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary R. Hutson and Mildred Phelps.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward Heim will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

M. Lee Stephey

M. Lee Stephey, 74, of 55 E. Washington St., died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 25, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jacob G. and Anna I. Moore Stephey.

He was a retired security officer at Doub's Wood.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one brother, S. Ray Stephey of Port Orange, Fla.; and one cousin, Harry M. Stephey of Greencastle, Pa.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. The Rev. Christopher J. Chantelau will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
