Doland F. Thumma Jr.
NEW MARKET, Md. - Doland Forrest Thumma Jr., 58, of Main Street, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born April 5, 1940, in Redland, Md., he was the son of Densie Marie Souders Thumma of New Market and the late Doland Forrest Thumma Sr.
He was employed as a security guard with Eagles Security, Gaithersburg, Md.
He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his companion, Sandy Alper of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Patricia Fields of St. Louis, Doris Tinsley and Lucrecia Embrey, both of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Barbara L. Anderson of Gaithersburg; one brother, Glenn E. Thumma of Germantown, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Lou Crouse; and two brothers, James Truman Thumma and Robert Thumma.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Parkhead United Methodist Church, Big Pool, Md. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining Parkhead Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.
Gilbert N. Groghan
ROCKVILLE, Md. - Gilbert Neale Groghan, 77, of 116 N. Van Buren St., died of emphysema Monday, June 1, 1998, at his home.
He graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in engineering.
He was employed by the Naval Research and Development Center in Carderock, Md., as a computer programmer and analysis technician for 28 years. He retired on disability in October 1976.
He did volunteer work in the accounting department of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
He was stationed with the U.S. Army in Okinawa, Japan, where he was wounded in July 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and Victory Medal.
He was a life member of DAV and a member of the American Legion.
He was a member of Rockville Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna Schmidt Groghan; two daughters, Robin Gail Blankenship of Hagerstown and Tongela Rea Littrell of Gettysburg, Pa.; one sister, Pauline McCue of Clarksburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Violet Rollins of Clarksburg, W.Va.; and one brother, Elmer Groghan of Stow, Ohio.
Services will be Tuesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville. Burial with military honors will be at 1 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Friends will be received Monday, June 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
M. Jeanette Mowen
M. Jeanette Mowen, 76, of 13811 Long Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
Born March 4, 1922, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late E. Carl and Edith Baker Gibney.
She was employed with Tristate Electrical Supply Co., retiring after 38 years.
She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church and Comrades Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband, W. Richard Mowen; two brothers, George C. Gibney and Paul B. Gibney, both of Hagerstown; a niece and a nephew.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Milton H. Smith
Milton Hamilton Smith, 72, of 117 W. Howard St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 6, 1925, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Smith and Genevieve Doris Gross Smith Pyles.
He retired from Certain-Teed Products Corp.
He was a member of Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; Friendship Lodge 84 AF&AM, and American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.
He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Bettyjane Smith; one son, Gary William Smith of Winchester, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

Thomas N. Potts
Thomas Nelson Potts, 58, of 202 E. Franklin St., Apt. 2, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at his home.
Born June 10, 1939, in Pinesburg, Md., he was the son of Florence Viola Crist Hoffman Potts of Pinesburg and the late Charles Blucker Potts.
He was owner and operator of Laurens Tavern, Hagerstown. He previously owned and operated Peck's Tavern, Williamsport. He retired from the Coca-Cola Co. in 1982.
He served with the U.S. Army.
He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Joni Britner of Williamsport; one son, Gregory A. Potts of Pinesburg; two sisters, Mary V. Cauffman and Suzanne V. Martin, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Charles K. Potts of Pinesburg and W. Daniel Potts of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Florence Hughes; and one brother, Theodore Hoffman.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Jim Hamby will officiate.
Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open today after 9 a.m.
Cecil Stroud
SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. - Cecil Stroud, 71, formerly of 300 15th Ave., South Surfside Beach, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Frederick Healthcare Center, Frederick, Md.
He was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Benwheeler, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Lucas Stroud.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by one daughter, Desiree Boyd of Braddock Heights, Md.; one stepdaughter, Claudia Smallwood of College Park, Md.; and two grandsons, Andy Boyd and Ronnie Boyd, both of Braddock Heights.
Services will be held at a later date.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

Julia F. Wolf
Julia F. Wolf, 79, of Hagerstown, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Hartland Assisted Living Center in Severna Park, Md.
Born April 23, 1919, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Loy and Ann Wilson Foreman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Wolf, in 1998.
She graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Emmitsburg, Md.
She was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church in Hagerstown, originally St. Mary's and later, St. Ann's Parish.
She was a member of Fountain Head Country Club for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Kight of Crofton, Md. and Julia Good of Wyndmoor, Pa.; one sister, Elizabeth Eves of Lock Haven, Pa.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Andrew S. Mohl will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown.

Guy P. DeLumeau
Guy P. DeLumeau, 76, of 13629 Donnybrook Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 7, 1921, in Milltown, N.J., he was the son of the late Henri P. and Louise Besnard DeLumeau.
He was employed by Mack Trucks, retiring after 33 years of service.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as a chief machinist mate.
He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and served as head usher.
He also was a member of Knights of Columbus, where he served as past grand knight and was president of the Columbus Club at the time of his death; Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion; VFW of Greencastle, Pa.; Mack Golden Bulldogs; and Mack Golf League.
He is survived by his wife, Doris DeLumeau of Hagerstown; a daughter, Diane Thornton of San Diego; five sons, Guy DeLumeau of Hagerstown, Gary DeLumeau of Somers Point, N.J., Gregory DeLumeau of Los Angeles, Bruce DeLumeau of Reno, Nev., and Brian DeLumeau of Poulsbo, Wash.; two sisters; a brother; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Alfred E. Smith as celebrant. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Prayers will be said at 3 p.m. Sunday.
