Ruth R. Hamilton
FREDERICK, Md. - Ruth R. Hamilton, 82, of 1477 Key Parkway, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Citizen's Nursing Home.
Born April 28, 1916, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Eva Catherine Bailey Rose.
She was employed as a secretary for many years, and then served, with her husband, as the first co-manager of Brunswick House from 1980 to 1989.
She served with the Women's Army Corps during World War II.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Brunswick, Md.
She was a member and the first female commander of American Legion, Steadman-Keenan Post 96 and the auxiliary; a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Brunswick Memorial Post 10421 and the auxiliary; and a social member of Vietnam Veterans, Chapter 0304, Frederick.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence W. Hamilton Jr.; one daughter, Lisa M. Hamilton of Frederick; one son, Gary W. Hamilton of Middletown, Md.; one brother, Charles W. Rose of Brunswick; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Easterly and Pearl Rose.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The Rev. Robert McCullough will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. Military honors will be conducted by Steadman-Keenan Post 96.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Kenneth B. Layman
Kenneth B. Layman, 69, of Walnut Towers, Hagerstown; and formerly of Dayton, Va., died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Nov. 15, 1928, near Harrisonburg, Va., he was the son of the late William D. and Fortuna Devers Layman. He also was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles E. Knicely.
He served in the armed forces from January 1946 to July 1947 and was discharged with the rank of corporal.
He is survived by two sisters, Jean Henton of Harrisonburg and Erma Raish of Dayton; one brother, William Layman of Dayton; and a companion, Mae Manspeaker of Hagerstown.
Burial will be private.
John F. Barnhart
John Frederick Barnhart, 74, of Hagerstown, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 17, 1923, in Washington County, he was the son of the late James Ross and Madeline Sensel Barnhart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Margaret Young Barnhart, in 1983.
He was a retired carpenter for Eastern Products Co., Hagerstown.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hancock.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Barnhart of Hagerstown; and two sons, Frederick Barnhart of Hagerstown and Douglas Barnhart of Williamsport.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The Rev. Charles R. Holder will officiate. Burial will be in Tonoloway Baptist Church Cemetery, Hancock.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Benny A. Boyer
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Benny A. Boyer, 60, of Ward Kline Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his home.
Born in Frederick County, Md., he was the son of Myrtle R. Eccard Smith of Myersville and the late Edwin Austin Boyer.
He was employed with C&P telephone in Hagerstown and Frederick, Md.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Evelyn R. "Billie" Boyer; one daughter, E. Renee Weaver of New Oxford, Pa.; one son, Anthony V. "Tony" Boyer of Myersville; two sisters, Beverly Nugent of Hagerstown and Sharon Biondi of Annapolis; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
Ronald L. Sanders
Ronald Lee Sanders, 60, of 11600 Peacock Trail, Hagerstown, who died Monday, June 8, 1998, was the son of the late Gilbert F. and Alice Pearl Beale Sanders.
John F. Barnhart
John Frederick Barnhart, 74, of Hagerstown, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Katherine F. Grant
OCEAN CITY, Md. - Katherine F. Grant, 96, of Ocean City, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late John Monahan and Ellen Stake Cushwa Dugan.
She had been a doctor's assistant in a medical laboratory; worked with the Maryland State Employment Security; and had been a manager at Hecht's Department Store in Washington, D.C. She also was a recruiter for the U.S. Navy.
She was a member of St. Mary Star-of-the-Sea Catholic Church, Ocean City.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn F. Rodden of Ocean City; two grandsons, Phillip Rodden of Ocean City and Martin Smith-Rodden of Portsmouth, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Star-of-the-Sea Catholic Church, 208 S. Baltimore Ave., Ocean City. The Rev. John P. Klevence will be celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park near Berlin, Md.

Clifford A. McElroy
Clifford Andrew McElroy, 59, of 129 Ray St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 7, 1938, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Thomas Howe and Alicia Mays McElroy.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was a member of New Life Christian Ministries, Williamsport.
He was an employee of Maryland Maid Kitchens for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly A. McElroy; two daughters, Christine Rohrer and Pamela Frazier, both of Hagerstown; six sisters, Patricia Boward, Peggy Young, Lorraine Zeigler and Nancy Sharer, all of Hagerstown, Eunice Eccard of Pennsylvania and Inez Lefkowitz of Baltimore; two brothers, Richard McElroy and Roland McElroy of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth McElroy and Joseph McElroy; and a half brother, Robert Fout.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ken Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
D. Joanne Souders Hull
D. Joanne Souders Hull, 62, of 64 1/4 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Blanchester, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Eugene E. and Lottie R. Lathan Kelsey.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Milton H. Souders.
She worked as a nursing aide at Avalon Manor Nursing Home; and at Corning Glass of Greencastle, Pa.
She is survived by her husband, William H. Hull; three daughters, Deborah J. Chilcote of Greencastle, Dawn M. Beers of Gilroy, Calif., and Diane L. Harris of Hagerstown; three sons, Michael E. Souders of Morrow, Ohio, Martin E. Souders and Mark G. Souders, both of Hagerstown; three sisters, Barbara Smith of Lancaster, Ohio, Sherry Monroe of Morrow and Rebecca McInnotosh of South Lebannon, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. The Rev. Robert V. Robertson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Maurice N. Johnson
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Maurice N. Johnson, 64, of Hot Springs, died Monday, June 8, 1998.
Born July 22, 1933, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Maurice Needy and Helen Irene Schmidt Johnson.
He was senior minister of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Hot Springs. He also served pastorates at Hagerstown; Independence, Ky.; Erlanger, Ky.; Little Rock, Ark., and Belton, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Maria Ward Johnson; one daughter, Maria Leigh Johnson of Little Rock, Ark.; two sons, Steven Maurice Johnson of Hagerstown and David Ward Johnson of Inez, Ky.; one sister, Dorothy Johnson Wagner of Pittsburgh; two brothers, his twin, Charles Edward Johnson of Hagerstown and Kenneth Lee Johnson of Brighton, Colo.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, Hot Springs. Pastor Doug Votaw will officiate.
Memorials donations may be made to Disciples Heritage Fellowship.
