Barbara L. Murray

Barbara L. Murray, 64, of 808 Corbett St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1933, in Bridgeport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Ralph M. and Mildred E. Cullers Coyle.

After 32 years with Washington County Board of Education, she retired in 1988 as secretary of Conococheague Elementary School.

She was owner and operator of Rusty's Yarn Barn of Hagerstown.

She was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church; and Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

She was a member of American Legion Post 211 Auxiliary of Funkstown; Ladies of the Elks 378; AARP; Washington County Retired Teachers Association; West End Senior Citizens; and Hagerstown Travel Club.

She is survived by her husband, W. Tom Murray; one son, Richard A. Murray of Cockysville, Md.; a half-sister, Margaret Palmer of Hagerstown; three brothers, Ralph E. Coyle of Hagerstown, C. David Coyle of Cleveland, Ga., and Donald L. Coyle of Newburgh, N.Y.; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ellen Coyle.

Services will be Monday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton and the Rev. Darryl C. Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Elevator Fund of Grace United Methodist Church, corner of Church and Winter streets, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

R. Earl Carnahan

SHARPSBURG - R. Earl "Carney" Carnahan, 89, formerly of 5616 Sharpsburg Pike, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 6, 1909, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late Houston Earl and Lillian Otto Carnahan.

He was employed by Hagerstown Auto Parts for 10 years, retiring in 1985. He previously was employed with Auto Electric Service Co. for 46 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of United Church of Christ in Sharpsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Lela Mae Carnahan; one brother, Leon Carnahan of Hagerstown; two nephews, and one niece.

He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Earl Carnahan, in 1950.

A graveside service will be held Monday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Beverly Lewis will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

John H. Ambrose

DEEP CREEK LAKE, Md. - John H. Ambrose, 65, of Deep Creek Lake, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at his home.

Born July 27, 1932, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Perry R. and Rosemarie Stegmaier Ambrose.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy R. Knapp Ambrose, in 1988.

He graduated from Fort Hill High School; Frostburg State University; and the University of Maryland.

He was owner and operator of JG's Pub, Deep Creek Lake. Previously, he was a salesman for SRA, a subsidiary of IBM. He taught physical science in Prince Georges County, Md. for 10 years.

He served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Alsatia Club, Hagerstown; American Legion; and was president of Deep Creek Lake Investment Company.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Collins of Deep Creek Lake; one son, Thomas P. Ambrose with the U.S. Navy in San Diego; one brother, Robert B. Ambrose of Cheverly, Md.; and two grandchildren.

At his request, his body has been donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at JG's Pub, Deep Creek Lake.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department; or Southern Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are by Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Md.

Clifford A. McElroy

Clifford Andrew McElroy, 59, of 129 Ray St., Hagerstown, who died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, is survived by a sister, Lorraine Sigler of Hagerstown; and a brother, Ronald McElroy of Hagerstown.

D. Joanne Souders Hull

D. Joanne Souders Hull, 62, of 64 1/4 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, who died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, is survived by four brothers, Paul Kelsey of Cincinnati, Gary Kelsey and William Kelsey, both of Lebanon, Ohio, and Robert Kelsey of Morrow, Ohio.

Benny A. Boyer

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Benny A. Boyer, 60, of Ward Kline Road, who died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, was the son of Myrtle R. Eccard Smith of Myersville and Edwin Austin Boyer.

Richard L. Stoner Sr.

LITTLE ORLEANS, Md. - Richard Lee Stoner Sr., 80, of St. Patricks Road, S.E., died Friday, June 12, 1998, at his home.

Born March 14, 1918, in Westminster, Md., he was the son of the late Clayton L. and Mary Emma Stansbury Stoner.

He retired from Local 37 Operating Engineers; and had worked for Industrial X-Ray of Houston, as a pipe liner.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre.

He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 37, Baltimore; VFW Post 467, Westminster; and a life member of NRA.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by his wife, Anna C. Stachnick Stoner, whom he married June 7, 1941; one daughter, Carol Lee Martin of Westminster; two sons, Richard Lee Stoner Jr. of Little Orleans and Wayne Stoner of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Virginia Pickett and June Gosnel, both of Westminster; one brother, Carl Stoner of Westminster; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rocky Gap Cemetery Chapel, Cumberland, Md. The Rev. Alan Smith will officiate. Military rites will be conducted; burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.

Memorial donations may be made to Orleans Fire Department 43, Orleans Road, Little Orleans, Md. 21766.

Owen W. Smith

McCOMB, Miss. - Owen W. Smith, 73, of East Fork community west of McComb, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at his home.

Born June 13, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Russell Edward and Catherine Bell Smith.

He graduated from Balboa High School, Panama Canal Zone; and received his associate of arts degree from Canal Zone Junior College.

He was employed by Water and Lab Branch of Maintenance Division for 21 years. In November 1982, he transferred to Contract and Inspection as a supervisory contract inspector. After a 10-year break in service, he worked for Campbell Soup Co. and later for Kent County Schools in Chestertown, Md., as a maintenance supervisor.

He was a member of Line Creek Baptist Church, Kentwood, La., before moving to East Fork Baptist Church Community.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 1414 of the Panama Canal Zone; Local 595 IUOE; a life member of American Amateur Relay League. He was a ham radio operator for 35 years. He was instrumental in a life-saving evacuation of a private resort island during an invasion of rebel Indians on the Atlantic side of Panama.

He is survived by his wife, Gerda Smith; a daughter, Carol Leigh Dixon of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a son, Russell Owen Smith of Panama; a stepdaughter, Karen Donovan of Buena Vista, Va.; two brothers, Hugh Smith of Hagerstown and William Carlos of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at East Fork Baptist Church. The Rev. Lucky Teague will officiate.

Jared L. Gardner

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Jared Logan Gardner, 3, of Vancouver, died of heart failure Saturday, June 6, 1998, in Seattle.

Born Dec. 24, 1994, in Havelock, N.C., he was the son of Robert and Dana Gardner of Vancouver.

He was a Christian.

He liked to swim and ride his bike. He also liked Disney videos and dinosaurs.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Dillon Gardner of Vancouver; and grandparents, Kathy Larned of Arizona, Ray Elmore of Arizona, Barbara and Ronnie Detrow of Maryland and Bob and Bonnie Gardner of Indiana.

A memorial service was held Friday, June 12, at Evergreen Staples Funeral Chapel, Vancouver.

Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital and Medical Center, 4800 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle, Wash. 98105.

Alton B. Carter

Alton Byron Carter, 81, of 1329 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1916, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late John and Amelia Turner Carter.

He retired from Southern Uniform in Baltimore. He also was owner and operator of Carter's Fuel Service in Hagerstown for 19 years.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Carter of Hagerstown; five sons, Alton L. Carter of Central, Va., Terry L. Carter of Greencastle, Pa., Rick Carter of Hagerstown, Bryon K. Carter of Harrisburg, Pa., and Vincent S. Carter of Baltimore; two sisters, Juanita Clipp and Evelyn Kershner, both of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. James C. Brinkley will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The viewing will be Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
